A Novel Degradable Adsorbent Of The Hyperbranched Aliphatic Polyester Grafted Cellulose For Heavy Metal Ions, Peng Liu

A novel degradable adsorbent for the removal of heavy metal ions from waste water, a hyperbranched aliphatic polyester grafted cellulose (HAPE-Cell), was successfully prepared by the simple one-pot method for the first time. The hyperbranched aliphatic polyester was grafted from the surface hydroxyl groups of natural cotton fibers via the solution polycondensation of the AB_2 monomer, 2, 2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid (bis-MPA), with the catalysis of p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TSA). The HAPE-Cell was characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A long chain ketone (crassifone), a pentacyclic triterpenoid coupled with fatty acid moiety (crassifoate), and an acyclic diterpenoid (crassifol) have been isolated from the ethanol soluble part of Nepeta crassifolia (Lamiaceae) collected from Kangavar, Iran. Structures of all the metabolites were elucidated with the aid of spectroscopic techniques, including 2D NMR experiments.

The key compounds, 1-(2-iodocyclohex-1-en-1-yl) benzene (12) and 1-(2-iodocyclohex-2-en-1-yl) benzene (13), for the generation of 1-cyclohex-1,2-dien-1-ylbezene (20) were synthesized starting with cyclohexanone. Separate reactions of 12 and 13 with KOtBu in benzene in a sealed tube at 180 °C gave 6 products: 1-cyclohex-1-en-1-ylbenzene (8), 2-phenylcyclohexanone (10), 1,8-diphenyl-2,3,4,4a,4b,5,6,7-octahydrobiphenylene (21), 8a-phenyl-1,2,3,4,6,7,8,8a-octahyd-rotriphenylene (22), 1,2-diphenylcyclohexene (23), and 1-(2-tert-butoxycyclohex-1-enyl) benzene (24). In addition, reactions of 12 and 13 under the same conditions in the presence of diphenylisobenzofuran and furan as trapping reagents afforded the [4 + 2] cyclo-adducts 30, 31, and 32 in good yields, respectively.

Octahedral-like NiFe_2O_4 ferrite nanocrystals were synthesized using EDTA-assisted hydrothermal method under mild conditions. XRD and FTIR analysis were used for composition and structure investigation. XRD analysis revealed a pure ferrite phase with high crystallinity. Morphological investigation by SEM showed octahedral nanocrystals with an average particle size of \sim 40 nm. Crystallite size calculated from XRD peak broadening resulted in an average crystallite size of 39 nm, matching well with the SEM observations. TEM analysis and corresponding electron diffraction confirmed the octahedral morphology and single crystallinity of octahedral nanoparticles. The binding ability of N,N'-bis(1'-hydroxy-2'-acetonaphthone)propylenediimine (H_2L) towards metal ions was investigated by performing liquid-liquid extraction experiments to extract Cu^{2+}, Ni^{2+}, Co^{2+}, and Zn^{2+} ions from nitrate solutions. Extraction takes place by a cation exchange mechanism and the ligand shows a pronounced selectivity towards Cu^{2+} ions. Conventional log-log analysis of the extraction data reveals that the Cu^{2+} ions are extracted by a 1:1 (metal to ligand) complex formation. The effect of parameters influencing the extraction process, such as type of diluent and concentration of electrolyte in the aqueous phase, has been studied. The esterification of propionic acid with isobutanol in the presence of Amberlyst-15 as a catalyst was studied. Isobutyl propionate synthesized in this reaction has the fragrance of rum and is used in the food industry. The experiments were carried out in a stirred batch reactor at temperatures from 318 K to 348 K. As a solvent, 1,4 dioxan was used. The effects of the amount of catalyst used, the reaction time, the stirring speed, and the reaction temperature on the synthesis of isobutyl propionate were investigated. Monofunctional polystyrenes with cyano, carboxylic acid, and hydroxyl terminal groups were synthesized by reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (RATRP) using corresponding azo initiators in conjunction with copper and iron complexes. These functional polymers were further used in the atom transfer radical coupling (ATRC) reaction in the presence of Cu(I) and Cu(0) in order to obtain telechelic polystyrenes. In the iron-mediated system, while RATRP experiments gave satisfactory results, the corresponding ATRC process yielded polymers with low functionality. The copper-mediated system, however, gave contrary results. In the RATRP step, initiation efficiency was rather low and polymers with relatively higher polydispersity were obtained. …

Oligo-2-[(2-hydroxymethylphenylimino) methyl] phenol O-(2-HMPIMP) and oligo-2-[(2-hydroxymet\-hylphenyl imino) methyl]-5-bromo-phenol O-(2-HMPIMBP) were synthesized by the oxidative polycondensation reaction using air as an oxidant in an aqueous alkaline medium at 70 °C. They were characterized by ^1H-NMR, FT-IR, UV-vis, TG, size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and elemental analysis. According to the SEC analyses, the number-average molecular weight (M_n), weight-average molecular weight (M_w) and polydispersity index (PDI) values of O-2-HMPIMBP and O-2-HMPIMP are 1100, 1600 g mol^{-1} and 1.45; and 6000, 6250 g mol^{-1} and 1.04, respectively. Atenolol selective electrodes were prepared based on a complex atenolol-phosphotungstate as an active material using the plasticizers di-butyl phosphate (DBP), tri-butyl phosphate (TBP), o-nitro phenyl octyl ether (NPOE) and di-octyl phthalate (DOPH) in a PVC matrix membrane. The properties of the prepared electrodes were studied, namely slope, concentration range, detection limit, lifetime, pH effect and selectivity. The experimental results showed that the best electrode was based on DOPH as plasticizer, displaying a linear range from 1.00 x 10^{-4} M to 5.00 x 10^{-2} M with a Nernstian slope of 55.91 mV/decade and correlation coefficient of 0.9995. Isomerisation of nC_7 over a sulphated zirconia (SZ)-based bifunctional catalyst was studied at 150 °C. Au, Ir, Pd and Pt were used as promoters of SZ. The first objective was the production of C_7 isomers with high octane numbers. PtSZ is the most suitable catalyst despite low conversions and a high proportion of methylhexanes instead of dimethylpentanes. The second objective was to assess Au as a promoter of SZ. ZSM-5 crystals were synthesized from template-free batches on macroporous \alpha-alumina disks. The SiO_2/Al_2O_3 ratio of the synthesis gel influenced the crystal morphology, surface coverage and intergrowth among the crystals. Prismatic ZSM-5 crystals covered the disk surface when the SiO_2/Al_2O_3 ratio of the batch was higher than 100, whereas spherical polycrystalline particles of ZSM-5 were obtained from batches with a SiO_2/Al_2O_3 ratio of 80. Tetradentate Schiff base ligands, which were derived from the condensation of phenylenediamine with salicylaldehyde [salpphenH_2: N, N'-p-phenylene-bis(salicyclideneimine)] or 3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyben- zaldehyde [^{tBu}salpphenH_2: N, N'-p-phenylene-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)] and their complexes of Cu(II), Mo(IV) and adduct of Sn(IV) were synthesized and characterized by ^1H-NMR, ^{13}C-NMR, and IR spectroscopic methods, mp, elemental analysis, and magnetic susceptibility. The interaction of nicotinamide (NA) with NH_4VO_3 at the physiological pH (pH 7.4) was studied by voltammetry and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The reduction of V(V) ions complexed with NA in phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) was observed as a well-defined reversible reduction peak at --0.35 V. The stoichiometric (metal:ligand) ratio of the complex of V(V) with NA was determined as 1:2 by the mole ratio method.

The copolymers of triethoxyvinylsilane (TEVS) with styrene (St), butyl acrylate (BA), and methacrylic acid (MAA) were prepared by emulsion polymerization. The copolymerization was carried out by using auxiliary agents at 90 °C in the presence of potassium peroxodisulfate (KPS) as the initiator. Nonylphenol ethylene oxide -- 40 units (NP-40) and sodium lauryl sulfoacetate (SLSA) were used as nonionic and anionic emulsifiers, respectively. The resulting copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). We prepared 8 new organotin compounds with the general formulae [R_3SnL], where R = Me (1), Bu (2), Ph (3), and Cy (4) and [R_2SnL_2], where R = Me (5), Et (6), Bu (7), Oct (8), and L = piperonylic acid, and characterized them by elemental analyses, IR spectra, and multinuclear NMR (^1H, ^{13}C, and ^{119}Sn). The structure of 5 was confirmed by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The geometry around the tin atom was compared in both solution and solid state. In this paper we describe an alternative route for the preparation of dendrons bearing fluoro aryl functionalities at the periphery using mesylate activation. p-Fluorobenzyl bromide and perfluorobenzyl bromide were used to introduce the p-fluoro and perfluorobenzyl moieties at the periphery of dendrons. 3,5-Dihydroxybenzyl alcohol was used as the repeating unit of the dendrons. In this convergent approach, the Williamson ether synthesis technique was used as the generation enhancement step. Second generation mono- and perfluorobenzyl alcohol dendrons were obtained from active mesylate precursors. PVC-membrane electrodes for Ag^+ based on either 18-crown-6 (I) or di-benzo-18-crown-6 ether (II) were applied for the first time. The effect of solvent mediator on the electrode performance was discussed. Nernstian slope values were 59 and 58.9 mV/decade for both I and II electrode types, respectively. The linear concentration range was 10^{-5}-10^{-1}M. The detection limit was 7.9 \times 10^{-6} M. The working pH ranges were 5-9 or 4-9, depending on the concentration of Ag^+ ion. Four platinum(II) and 4 platinum(IV) complexes with the structures [PtL_2Cl_2], [PtL_2I_2], [PtL_2Cl_4], and [PtL_2Cl_2(OH)_2] (L = 5(6)-non/orchloro-substituted-2-hydroxymethylbenzimidazole ligands as ``non-leaving groups''), respectively, were synthesized and characterized by their elemental analyses, and IR and ^1H-NMR spectra. In vitro cytotoxic activities of the platinum(II) and platinum(IV) complexes were tested against the human MCF-7 (breast cancer) and HeLa (cervix cancer) cell lines using the cell culture method. In general, the platinum(II) complexes were more active than the corresponding platinum(IV) complexes. The coating characteristics of Pb-Co mixed metal oxide soot oxidation catalysts over a SiC foam filter were studied. The coating was done via incipient wetness impregnation of a slurry with Pb/Co weight ratio = 2. The coating was accomplished by 3 consecutive impregnation-drying-calcination cycles. After each cycle surface structure and composition were monitored by scanning electron microscope (SEM). SEM analysis revealed that the surface composition of Pb was high on the high porosity region and surface composition of Co was high on the low porosity region inside the filter. The kinetics of the selective CO oxidation was studied in a fixed-bed microreactor at atmospheric pressure over Pt-Co-Ce/Al_2O_3 catalyst, which was prepared using the incipient to wetness co-impregnation technique. Intrinsic kinetic data were obtained in the initial rate region using 8 different sets of CO and O_2 concentrations, each at 2 space times, i.e. 2 catalyst loadings, at 110 °C. The kinetic models based on elementary reaction steps were constructed and tested using nonlinear regression analysis with Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. In this review article, some of the challenging research areas related to the development of novel catalysts and catalytic processes for the chemical fixation of CO_2 by converting it to alcohols and ethers, and for the conversion of alcohols to olefins and other hydrocarbons are reviewed. Ethanol, methanol, and the ethers derived from them, such as DEE and DME, have good burning characteristics and may be considered attractive transportation fuel alternates. New processes for catalytic selective oxidation and dehydration of alcohols may open up new pathways for the production of olefins and other petrochemicals from non-petroleum feedstock. The use of chemically modified XAD-4-1,2-bis (o-aminophenylthio) ethane chelating resin for preconcentrating Cr^{6+}, Mn^{2+}, Fe^{3+}, Co^{2+}, Cu^{2+}, Cd^{2+}, Zn^{2+}, Pb^{2+}, and Ni^{2+} was studied using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) for metal monitoring in environmental samples. Cd^{2+}, Zn^{2+}, Pb^{2+}, and Ni^{2+} ions were quantitatively recovered at the rate of 96.0%, 101.0%, 101.0%, and 95.0%, respectively (RSD < 5%), from the studied solutions. The procedure is based on the retention of analytes on a short column of 1,2-bis (o-aminophenylthio) ethane-XAD-4 chelating resin from a buffered sample solution and subsequent elution with 1 M HNO_3. Various parameters, such as pH, eluent type, and concentration, flow rate of sample solution and matrix interference effect on the retention of the metal ions have been studied. The optimum pH for the sorption of the above-mentioned metal ions was about 6. The adsorption and batch capacity of adsorbent and loading half time (t_{1/2}) for Ni^{2+}, Zn^{2+}, Cd^{2+}, and Pb^{2+} were established. The limit of detection was 3.0 \mu g L^{-1} for Pb^{2+} and Ni^{2+}, 0.6 \mu g L^{-1} for Cd^{2+}, and 0.3 \mu g L^{-1} for Zn^{2+}. The validation of the procedure was carried out by analysis of certified reference materials and standard addition. The proposed enrichment method was applied to environmental samples from Trabzon.
