Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Measurements of angular distributions of K-shell electrons photoejected from molecular nitrogen are reported which reveal large deviations at relatively low photon energies ( ħω≤500eV) from emission patterns anticipated from the dipole approximation to interactions between radiation and matter. A concomitant theoretical analysis incorporating the effects of electromagnetic retardation attributes the observed large nondipole behaviors in N2 to bond-length-dependent terms in the E1⊗(E2,M1) photoelectron emission amplitudes which are indicative of a potentially universal nondipole behavior in molecular photoionization.

Thermal Effects On The Measurement Of Photocurrent At Anodic Films On Silver Electrode, Yuan Gu, Zhi Yu Jiang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The influence of heat on the photocurrent of Ag electrode in alkaline solution was investigated by measuring photocurrent, photothermal signal and thermal current under the irraiation of laser beams with the wavelengths of 488 nm and 532 nm. It was found the photocurrent at the Ag 2O film was influenced by the temperature change at the electrode surface under the irradiation of light. During the electrochemical transfer between Ag, Ag 2O and AgO in the anodic film, the surface temperature changed obviously due to the different absorptance of the surface substances. It was suggested by comparing the voltammograms, photocurrent curves …

Adsorption And Oxidation Of Methanol On Pt And Sb, S Modified Pt Electrodes Using Cyclic Voltammetry And Eqcm, Guo-Liang Chen, Sheng-Pei Chen, Heng Lin, Xing-Hong Zheng, Shi-Gang Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

The processes of adsorption and oxidation of methanol on Pt, Pt/Sb ad and Pt/S ad electrodes were studied by using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical quartz crystal microba_lance (EQCM). The results demonstrated that the oxidation of methanol depends strongly on oxidation states of electrode surface. Sb adatoms on Pt surface can adsorb oxygen at relatively low potentials, and exhibit catalytic effects for methanol oxidation. In contrast to Pt electrodes, the oxidation peak potential of methanol in this case negatively shifted to about 130 mV. In a contrary, the oxidation of S adatoms consumes oxygen species of Pt electrode surface. As a …

Journal of Electrochemistry

In 0.1 mol/L HAc solution(pH=2.89),the voltammetric behaviours of aloe emodin at a glassy carbon electode has been studied. One pair of current peak of the voltammogram may be attributed to a quasireversible two electron transfer of aloe emodin molecules at the glassy carbon electrode. A new method, the derivative anodic stripping voltammetry, for aloe emodin determination is described. The adsorptive potential of aloe emodin is -0.80V(vs. SCE),while its stripping potential is -0.38V(vs.SCE). The peak current is propotional to the concentration of aloe emodin over the range of 2.0×10 -7 ~8.0×10 -6 mol/L. The method is simple, rapid and reliable for …

Collision-Induced Electronic Energy Transfer From V=0 Of The E(0g+) Ion-Pair State In I2: Collisions With I2(X), Christopher J. Fecko , '98, Miriam Arak Freedman , '00, Thomas Alex Stephenson

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

The collision-induced electronic energy transfer that occurs when I-2 in the E(0(g)(+)) ion-pair electronic state collides with ground electronic state I-2 has been investigated. We prepare I-2 in single rotational levels in v = 0 of the E state using two-color double resonance laser excitation. The resulting emission spectrum shows that the nearby (DeltaT(e) = -385 cm(-1)) D(0(u)(+)) electronic state is populated. The cross section for collision-induced E -->D energy transfer is found to be IS - 3 Angstrom (2). A range of D state vibrational levels are populated, consistent with a model in which overlap between the initial …

Two decades ago, it was predicted [Y. S. Kim et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 46, 1326 (1981)] that relativistic effects should alter the dynamics of the photoionization process in the vicinity of Cooper minima. The present experimental and theoretical study of the angular distributions of Xe 4d3/2 and 4d5/2 photoelectrons demonstrates this effect for the first time. The results clearly imply that relativistic effects are likely to be important for intermediate- Z atoms at most energies.

Microstructure And Electrochemical Properties Of The Melt_Spinning Zr_(0.9)Ti_(0.1) (Ni,Co,Mn,V)_(2.1) Alloy, Ming-Fen Wen, Yu-Chun Zhai, Lian Chen, Min Tong, Hua Zhen, Rong-Jun Ma

Journal of Electrochemistry

The microstructure and electrochemical properties of Zr 0.9 Ti 0.1 (Ni,Co,Mn,V) 2.1 alloys prepared by both the melt_spinning method and the conventional induction melting were investigated. XRD studies show that Zr 0.9 Ti 0.1 (Ni,Co,Mn,V) 2.1 alloys at as_cast,melt_spinning and annealing are all face center cubic structure with C15 laves phase, the higher the melt_spinning rate, the more the amorphous content. The electrochemical measurements show that melt_spinning alloys have better active behavior, low discharge capacity(<280 mAh/g); but after annealed, the alloys are activated completely with 30 cycles, the capacities about 340 mAh/g are higher than those of as_cast and melt_spinning alloys;the annealec alloys have a better cycle stability than that of as_cast alloy, and the higher the melt_spinning rate is, the more stable the alloy becomes; at 300 mAh/g current density, the capacity of annealed 40 m/s alloy is up to 85% of the maximum capacity after 800 cycles, the capacity decay rate is about 6.9%.

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Study On A3 Steel In Anti-Corrosive Pigment Extract Solution, Zhi-Jun Gu, Yong-Gui Liao, Zhi-Gang Zhang, Qi-Long Guo, Fang-Teng Su, Wen-Yun Hu, Yan-Zhen Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

The corrosion behaviors of A3 steel in different pH, 3.5%NaCl, modified zinc phosphate and aluminum triphosphate extract solutions have been studied by EIS. Results show:(a) The resistance increases with the increase of pH value under the same circumstances, but the capacity is the reverse.(b) Zinc phosphate, because of its low solubility, shows no inhibitive performance for A3 steel in 3.5% NaCl extract solutions. (c) Aluminum triphosphate has good inhibitive performance for A3 steel in 3.5% NaCl extract solutions at a pH of 6, probably because the triphosphate ion can complex with the corrosion_product, such as ferric and ferrous ions, and …

Study Of Cathodic Protection For Underground Structures At Gas Station, Jiunn Shyong Luo, Yin Chieh Chang, Jun Chou Oung, Wen Chih Yang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Underground structures in gas station include storage tanks, transportation pipelines, and rebar inconcrete. If rebar contacted with tanks or pipelines, effects of cathodic protection will be interfered. Present study was focused upon the effectiveness of impressed current cathodic protection for underground structures at gas station as rebar contacted with/or without tanks and pipelines. It was founded that the -850 mV criterion could not be applied to evaluate effectiveness of cathodic protection systems in gas station. Quantity of polarization of protected structures should be calculated and evaluated.

Simultaneous Determination Of Gold(Ⅲ) And Copper(Ⅱ) With Two-Way Stripping Voltammetry, Rong-Zong Hu, Dong-Ping Wei, Guang Wei, Yue-Ying Liu

Journal of Electrochemistry

A novel Two_way Stripping Voltammetry method for simultaneous determination of Au 3+ and Cu 2+ was reported in this paper. Because of the strongly electrostatic attraction of carbon paste electrode towards Au(Ⅲ) ion at positive potential and the biochemical contribution of Gram_positive bacteria strain DO1, the ion can be determined by cathodic stripping voltammetry. At the same time, Cu(Ⅱ) is reduced readily under the catalysis of ultra_fine gold particles, thereafter it can be determined by anode stripping voltammetry. There is no interference between the determination of Au 3+ and Cu 2+ . A perfect liner relationship between the concentrations of …

A New Method For Impregnating Nafion Solution Into The Electrode Of Pemfc, Qian Tang, Ming Han, Bao-Lian Yi, Zhi-Yin Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

We have developed a new method for impregnating Nafion solution into the catalyst layer of homemade hydrophobic electrode using capillary process. Those electrodes show better performance and higher utilization of catalyst (detected by CV and TEM) than traditional spray method in PEMFC. According to the results of SEM photograph and linear_analysis of sulfur and platinum for the electrode cross_section, we can conclude that the resin is uniform in the catalyst layer and has almost same depth as catalyst in the impregnated electrode. While in traditional method resin is not uniform in the catalyst layer and penetrates into the diffusion layer, …

By comparing with other electrochemical techniques, the results obtained in the previous work reveal that the coulostatic method is an interesting alternative to the usual procedures for estimation of corrosion rate, and is better than them in some respects. The main advantages are as follows. The signal to be used can be instantaneous and as small as desired, so the electrode is minimally perturted during the measuring process. In addition, it is as rapid and quantitative, and at least as reliable …

Uneven Anodic Dissolution Of Iron Induced By Magnetic Field, Zhan-Peng Lv, De-Lun Huang, Wu Yang Aug 2001

Uneven Anodic Dissolution Of Iron Induced By Magnetic Field, Zhan-Peng Lv, De-Lun Huang, Wu Yang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The effects of magnetic field on anodic dissolution of iron in sulfuric acid were studied by potentiostatic polarization measurements and scanning electron microscopy observation. Magnetic field would reduce the surface film coverage fraction on electrode by enhancing the film dissolution process, thus made the electrode prone to active dissolution state. With increasing the applied potentials, magnetic field would accelerate the anodic dissolution, change the oscillation state or passive state to active dissolution state, or maintain the passive state, respectively. Potential for onset of passivation moved in the noble direction when magnetic field was imposed. At specific anodic potentials, denting occurred …
