Adsorption And Transport Of Colloids At Interface And In Bulk, Jingyun Lee Mar 2021

Adsorption And Transport Of Colloids At Interface And In Bulk, Jingyun Lee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Colloids are suspensions of microscopic insoluble particles dispersed in a continuum phase such as liquid or gas. Colloids are found in our everyday life from food and cosmetic industries to pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. Depending on a global minimum of the free-energy landscape, colloidal suspensions can be classified as two major classes: equilibrium or active colloidal system. This Ph.D dissertation presents strategies to engineer equilibrium self-assembled structures and out-of-equilibrium active matter using various interparticle forces.

First, we introduce the means to promote the equilibrium self-assembled structures driven by adsorption of colloids at interface. Typically, adsorption of colloids at interface is …

Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (Sers) As A Nanoscale Adsorption Phenomenon: Development Of Tailored Nanomaterials For Applications In Drug Detection, Chiara Deriu Nov 2020

Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (Sers) As A Nanoscale Adsorption Phenomenon: Development Of Tailored Nanomaterials For Applications In Drug Detection, Chiara Deriu

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) is an analytical technique in which nanostructured substrates amplify the inherently weak Raman signal of an adsorbed species by several orders of magnitude, enabling the detection of trace compounds, up to the single molecule level. While this may be an exceptional tool for any analytical scientist, SERS is at present relegated to the role of academic sensation, and is underutilized in everyday analytical practice. The SERS community is increasingly attributing this setback to a poor understanding of nanoscale surfaces and their chemical environment; since molecular adsorption at the nanostructured surface enables SERS detection, uncertainty about …

Temperature-Dependent Kinetic Studies Of Arsenicals Adsorption From Solution To Hematite Nanoparticles, Sara Soldoozy Jan 2019

Temperature-Dependent Kinetic Studies Of Arsenicals Adsorption From Solution To Hematite Nanoparticles, Sara Soldoozy

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Surface chemistry is the study of the chemical and physical phenomena that transpire at interfaces such as liquid-solid, solid-gas, liquid-gas, and liquid-liquid. To study the reactions occurred at the surfaces, surface sensitive techniques come to play. Adsorption of arsenical compounds (liquid adsorbate), particularly arsenate (iAs) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), to the surface of iron bearing materials (solid adsorbent) that frequently are found in geosorbents such as hematite (Fe2O3) has been studied in this thesis. Arsenical compounds can pollute the environment through natural sources and anthropogenic activities, and ultimately contaminate water. Absorbing these pollutants to a material …

Effects Of So2 In Air On Performance Of Direct Methanol Fuel Cell, Bin Qin, Fen-Ning Jing, Xue-Jing Sun, Gong-Quan Sun, Hai Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) generally use oxygen as an oxidant. Contaminants such as sulfides and nitrides in the air can affect the performance of the DMFC. In this work, the effects of SO2 on the performance of DMFC were investigated and the mechanism of poisoning was analyzed, by means of constant current discharge curve, polarization performance curve, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). In the CV scan, the permeated methanol was oxidized at a low potential to eliminate its effect on the SO2 poisoning behavior test. The results showed that the SO2 poisoning resulted …

We report on atom-specific activation of CO oxidation on Ru(0001) via resonant X-ray excitation. We show that resonant 1s core-level excitation of atomically adsorbed oxygen in the co-adsorbed phase of CO and oxygen directly drives CO oxidation. We separate this direct resonant channel from indirectly driven oxidation via X-ray induced substrate heating. Based on density functional theory calculations, we identify the valence-excited state created by the Auger decay as the driving electronic state for direct CO oxidation. We utilized the fresh-slice multi-pulse mode at the Linac Coherent Light Source that provided time-overlapped and 30 fs delayed pairs of soft …

Experimental Evaluation Of Uranyl Transport Into Mesoporous Silica Gel Using Fluorescence, Brandon M. Dodd Jan 2018

Experimental Evaluation Of Uranyl Transport Into Mesoporous Silica Gel Using Fluorescence, Brandon M. Dodd

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigated parameters that can affect the use of nanoporous silica gel as a media for accumulating a detectable amount of uranium. The unique fluorescence of the Uranyl (UO22+) ion was used to evaluate the transport kinetics and accumulation within silica gel in a static fluid and under pressure driven flow. The addition of fluid flow decreased the time constant from on the order of an hour to approximately 2s with a very low fluid velocity of 0.36cm/s. The 0.36cm/s fluid velocity was found to be the critical velocity above which there was no gain in …

Functionalization Of Metal Oxide Surfaces Through Chemical Reactions And Physical Adsorption, Gabriel C. Graffius May 2016

Functionalization Of Metal Oxide Surfaces Through Chemical Reactions And Physical Adsorption, Gabriel C. Graffius

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The synthesis of high surface area metal oxides is an area of extensive research with potential applications in catalysis, adsorption, and materials chemistry. The functionalization of a material’s surface can dramatically change its physical and chemical properties. The research described herein is built on the foundation of traditional techniques used for synthesis, characterization, and functionalization of metal oxides and develops new mechanisms and materials for the functionalization of surfaces.

We began with Methyl-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxanes) (PDMSs), which are typically considered to be inert and not suitable for surface functionalization reactions because of the absence of readily hydrolysable groups. Nevertheless, these siloxanes …

Thermodynamics Of Short Chain Perfluoroalkanes Adsorbed On The Surfaces Of The Graphite Basal Plane And Mgo (100), Nathaniel Keenan Bass

Doctoral Dissertations

Molecular adsorption of short-chain linear perfluoroalkanes was studied by volumetric isotherm and by molecular dynamics simulation. Isotherms of perfluoroethane, perfluoropropane, and perfluorobutane gas were measured on clean surfaces of the graphite basal plane nanometer-scale cubic magnesium oxide (100). Each system was measured over a range of temperatures, and thermodynamic determinations of the entropies, enthalpies, and heats of adsorption were determined as a result. Potential phase transitions between the surface structures were identified, and the constant-coverage heats of adsorption for each system were determined. Comparisons to molecular dynamics simulations provided guidance in the assignment of phase diagrams, giving insights to the …

Rambling Between "Zhong Yong" And "Catalysis", Zi-Dong Wei Apr 2016

Rambling Between "Zhong Yong" And "Catalysis", Zi-Dong Wei

Journal of Electrochemistry

“Zhong Yong” represents a traditional Chinese wisdom, which was first proposed by Confucius and continuously richened by his followers. “Zhong Yong” pursues the balances among all kinds of contradictions, and insists that neither “too much” nor “not enough” is good. For a successful catalyst, on which the adsorption of reactants must be not so strong and not so weak either. On this point of view, there are the same pursuits for “Zhong Yong” and catalysis. In this paper, the author starts his story with a conversation between Confucius and his student, followed by 3 interesting stories happening in the ancient …

Fluctuations In Transient Response Of Adsorption-Based Plasmonic Sensors, Zeljko D. Cupic Dec 2013

Fluctuations In Transient Response Of Adsorption-Based Plasmonic Sensors, Zeljko D. Cupic

Zeljko D Cupic

The basic parameters of a sensor element defining its ultimate performance are sensitivity and intrinsic noise. In plasmonic gas sensors both are determined by refractive index changes due to adsorption and desorption (a–d) of target analyte particles to the sensor active area. In this paper we present a general model that can be simultaneously used to determine sensitivity and intrinsic noise of a plasmonic sensor both during transients and in steady-state and is valid for multi-analyte environments. The model utilizes the conventional probabilistic approach. It is derived without any assumptions about the stochastic nature of the fundamental (a–d) process. It …

Alkane Adsorption On Mgo(100): Volumetric Isotherm, Inelastic Neutron Scattering, And Computational Studies, Andrew Spencer Hicks May 2013

Alkane Adsorption On Mgo(100): Volumetric Isotherm, Inelastic Neutron Scattering, And Computational Studies, Andrew Spencer Hicks

Doctoral Dissertations

Volumetric adsorption isotherms and computational molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed for nonane and decane adfilms on MgO(100) nanocubes. From the isotherms, variety of thermodynamic quantities are calculated. These values, along with visual inspection of the isotherms, indicate a layer by layer trend from 2D to 3D behavior. This is attributed to the increasing importance of vertical adsorbate-adsorbate interactions as distance from the surface increases. Additionally, a 2D phase transition is observed for the first adsorbed layer as indicated by the evolution of the widths of the isotherm first derivative peaks. These experimental results are complemented by the MD calculations, …

Probing Bonding And Dynamics At Heterogeneous Adsorbate/Graphene Interfaces, Eric Charles Mattson

Theses and Dissertations

Graphene-based materials are becoming an astoundingly promising choice for many relevant technological and environmental applications. Deriving graphene from the reduction of graphene oxide (GO) is becoming a popular and inexpensive route toward the synthesis of these materials. While the desired product from GO reduction is pristine graphene, defects and residual oxygen functional groups inherited from the parent GO render reduced graphene oxide (RGO) distinct from graphene. In this work, the structure and bonding for GO and RGO is investigated to the end of a working understanding of the composition and properties of these materials. In situ selected area electron diffraction …

Electrochemical Behavior Of Riboflavin On Glassy Carbon Electrode, Hong Li, Lincai Jiang May 1999

Electrochemical Behavior Of Riboflavin On Glassy Carbon Electrode, Hong Li, Lincai Jiang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electrochemical behavior of riboflavin(RF) on glassy carbon has been investigated by using potential sweep, rotating ring_disc electrode and the measurement of differential capacitance. It is shown that a single well_behaved oxidation_reduction wave corresponding to a reversible two_electrons reaction apears in medium of pH<6,and the adsorption of RFH2 formed by electro_reduction is weak and hence its solubility is good.In medium of pH>6,there are two separating but overlapping partly oxidation_reduction waves corresponding to two_step one_electron reaction. The adsorptions of RFH and RFH2 produced by reduction reactions in medium of 610,the solubilities of the adsorbed species produced by electro_reduction are good.
