Study Of Solvent-Free, Microwave-Assisted Ring-Opening Reactions Of Phenyl Glycidyl Ether With Azoles, Marygrace Mcafee, Joshua Pack, Brian Walker
Arkansas Women in STEM Conference
Literature precedent supports that microwave-assisted organic synthesis can afford fast, high-yield, and efficient synthetic pathways, often comparable to or better than traditional heating methods. Building on this, our work utilizes microwave-assisted synthesis for the epoxide ring opening of phenyl glycidyl ether through nucleophilic addition, aiming to create both pyrazole and imidazole derivatives. These heterocyclic azole compounds have been shown to be important due to their presence in many natural products, as well as their anti-fungal and other pharmacological activities. We are exploring the use of microwave irradiation under neat (solvent-free) conditions, focused on a streamlined approach to minimize time, energy …
Physiochemical Properties Of Urethane-Containing Ionic Liquids And Ionenes From A Non-Isocyanate Synthetic Approach, George Timmermann
Physiochemical Properties Of Urethane-Containing Ionic Liquids And Ionenes From A Non-Isocyanate Synthetic Approach, George Timmermann
Scholars Week
Ionic polymers that are designed to contain ionic liquids (ILs) in their backbones have been shown to exhibit a high degree of variability through changing the type of ionic character and the location of the ionic region within the molecule. This large amount of variability in both the structure and characteristics of ILs allows researchers to design task-specific ionic polymers and ILs for a variety of applications including gas separation membranes and solid polymer electrolytes. The synthesis of a specific class of ILs and ionenes through the incorporation of urethane groups with imidazolium rings by reacting carbonyl diimidazole with various …

Synthesis Of Dibenzophosphole Derivatives, Allan Roy Sison
Synthesis Of Dibenzophosphole Derivatives, Allan Roy Sison
Campus Research Day
This presentation will demonstrate how dibenzophosphole derivatives are synthesized. There will also be studies on the properties of this complex compound. Our experiment is based on previous studies on dibenzophospholes. We will be using the methods from the previous studies and we will synthesize the derivatives of the dibenzophosphole compound using other compounds such as dibromophenol.

The application of this molecule can be used eventually to add several elements like (Bromine, Chlorine, etc.) Previous done research that was conducted was in shortening the process to synthesize PAH. Since then, there has been research conducted to stabilize the compound by closing/linking two of the un-linked benzene rings.

Synthesis Of Dibenzophospholes From Biphenyl, Claudia Velasquez
Synthesis Of Dibenzophospholes From Biphenyl, Claudia Velasquez
Campus Research Day
The aim is a direct synthesis of various diphenzylphospholes using biphenyl, phosphonic acid, and Tf2O. Successful addition of the phosphonic acid in a one step reaction would result in a more efficient production of the diphenylphospholes.

Synthesis Of A Sulfur Variant For Treatment Of Trypanosomiasis, Carlos Vera-Esquivel
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Previous work in our lab has found diphenyl ether benzylamines showed a successful response with a micromolar concentration of our lead compound to treat the deadly Trypanosamiosis rhodesience. Furthermore, mammalian cell lines saw promising resistance towards damages. The goal of this study was to synthesize a diphenyl thio benzylamine variant. This variant was more active toward T. b. rhodesience but showed more toxicity to both rat 10 (IC50 mM) and human cell lines (HFF, HC-04, U-2 OS, and HEK293). The selectivity index (ratio of toxicity to activity in the same concentration units (SI)) …
An In Vitro Study On Skin Protection Across The Uv Spectra, Cheyenne Boone
An In Vitro Study On Skin Protection Across The Uv Spectra, Cheyenne Boone
Posters-at-the-Capitol
Skin cancer is the number one cancer in the United States. Lack of awareness of how harmful UV radiation is could be the cause of the over two million cases reported since 2012. It appears that there is not a lot information on the active ingredients used in sunscreens. Some of the compounds have been linked to birth defects, hormone disruptions, and the bleaching of coral reefs. Samples of commonly used sunscreens (both sprays and creams), cosmetic foundation, essential oils, lotions, and three pure organic actives were tested at specific concentrations and ran through a UV spectrometer. The results have …

New Reactions Of Strained Allyl Silacycles, Elizabeth Cummins
Graduate Student Symposium
Ring-strained allylsilanes exhibit both electrophilic and nucleophilic characteristics, allowing for simultaneous activation and allylation of carbonyl compounds. Results are presented describing an optimized synthesis of certain allylsilacyclobutanes and their use in several selective carbon-carbon bond forming reactions.
Tunable Copper Complexes For Sustainable Photocatalysis, David Kline
Tunable Copper Complexes For Sustainable Photocatalysis, David Kline
Posters-at-the-Capitol
Photoredox catalysis has direct applications in sustainable chemistry and thus an immense impact on our environment. With the ability to harness energy directly from the sun to catalyze useful chemical reactions, photocatalysts can help to eliminate the need for harsh reaction conditions and reduce generation of hazardous chemical waste. Photocatalysts based on Earth-abundant metals such as copper have recently emerged as sustainable alternatives to rare-earth metals including iridium and ruthenium, which are no longer required for many photocatalyzed chemical transformations.

Spectrofluorometric Analysis of Bisphenol-A in Drinking Water Bottles
Bisphenol-A (BPA) is of environmental concern due to its ability to act as an endocrine disruptor in humans and many other animals. In the food industry, BPA is widely used in the production of plastic bottles and plastic liners in aluminum cans. Over time, trace amounts of BPA can leach from the container and into the contents inside. A new method of testing for trace amount of BPA involved the formation of an inclusion complex with ß-Cyclodextrin. With the formation of the inclusion complex, it becomes much easier to analyze low concentrations …
