Far-Ultraviolet Absorption Lines In The Remnant Of Sn 1006, Chi-Chao Wu, D. Michael Crenshaw, Andrew J. S. Hamilton, Robert A. Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have obtained a far-ultraviolet spectrum (1150-1600 Å) of a hot subdwarf star behind the remnant of supernova 1006 with the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) on the Hubble Space Telescope. The high-quality spectrum is used to test previous identifications of the strong absorption features discovered with the International Ultraviolet Explorer. These features have FWHM = 4000 (±300) km s-1 and are not at the rest wavelengths of known interstellar lines, as opposed to the broader (~8000 km s-1 FWHM) Fe II lines from the remnant centered at 0 km s-1 in near-UV FOS spectra. We …

The Tully-Fisher Relation And H0, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, Luiz N. Da Costa, Wolfram Freudling, John Salzer, Gary Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

The use of the Tully-Fisher (TF) relation for the determination of H0 relies on the availability of an adequate template TF relation and of reliable primary distances. Here we use a TF template relation with the best available kinematical zero point, obtained from a sample of 24 clusters of galaxies extending to cz ~ 9000 km s-1, and the most recent set of Cepheid distances for galaxies fit for TF use. The combination of these two ingredients yields H0 = 69 ± 5 km s-1 Mpc-1. The approach is significantly more accurate than …

Dartmouth Scholarship

The EFAR project is a study of 736 candidate early-type galaxies in 84 clusters lying in two regions toward Hercules-Corona Borealis and Perseus-Cetus at distances cz ≈ 6000-15,000 km s-1. In this paper we describe a new method of galaxy photometry adopted to derive the photometric parameters of the EFAR galaxies. The algorithm fits the circularized surface brightness profiles as the sum of two seeing-convolved components, an R1/4 and an exponential law. This approach allows us to fit the large variety of luminosity profiles displayed by the EFAR galaxies homogeneously and to derive (for at least a …

Pulsations And Accretion Geometry In Yy Draconis: A Study Based On Hubble Space Telescope Observations, Carole A. Haswell, Joseph Patterson, John R. Thorstensen, Coel Hellier

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present 1 Å resolution fast ultraviolet spectroscopy of YY Dra, coordinated U, B, V, R, and I photometry, and Hα spectroscopy. The UV continuum is strongly pulsed: we found 16% semiamplitude pulses with period 264.7(1) s; there was no evidence for power at twice this period. The UBV pulses are in phase with the UV continuum pulsation. A color temperature of 105 K was found for the pulse spectrum, with a corresponding area 0.5% of the white dwarf surface. We refine the white dwarf spin period, obtaining Pspin = 529.31 ± 0.02 s. Optical pulses at …

Dartmouth Scholarship

We describe and report progress on the joint U.S. and German campaign to map the X-ray emission from the entire Cygnus Loop supernova remnant with the ROSAT High Resolution Imager. The Cygnus Loop is the prototype for a supernova remnant that is dominated by interactions with the interstellar medium and supplies fundamental physical information on this basic mechanism for shaping the interstellar medium. The global view that these high-resolution observations provide emphasizes the inhomogeneity of the interstellar medium and the pivotal nature of cloud-blast wave interactions in determining the X-ray morphology of the supernova remnant. While investigating the details of …

Lower And Upper Bounds On Internal-Wave Frequencies In Stratified Rotating Fluids, Benoit Cushman-Roisin Dec 1996

Lower And Upper Bounds On Internal-Wave Frequencies In Stratified Rotating Fluids, Benoit Cushman-Roisin

Dartmouth Scholarship

According to classical theories, the frequencies of internal-gravity waves in stratified rotating fluids must lie between the Brunt-Väisälä frequency (a measure of the vertical density stratification) and the Coriolis frequency (equal to twice the rotation rate about the vertical axis). It is shown here that, in the case of the Earth's rotation where the pole-to-pole axis of rotation is almost everywhere not parallel to the local vertical, the range of realizable frequencies is broader. New formulas are derived for the lower and upper bounds of the frequencies.

On The Orbital Period Of The New Cataclysmic Variable Euve J2115-586, Stephane Vennes, Dayal T. Wickramasinghe, John R. Thorstensen, Damian J. Christian, Michael S. Bessell Nov 1996

On The Orbital Period Of The New Cataclysmic Variable Euve J2115-586, Stephane Vennes, Dayal T. Wickramasinghe, John R. Thorstensen, Damian J. Christian, Michael S. Bessell

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have obtained phase-resolved spectroscopy (3660-6040 Å) of the recently discovered cataclysmic variable EUVE J21 15-586 using the 74-inch telescope at Mount Stromlo Observatory. The radial velocity is modulated over a period of 110.8 min with a possible one-cycle-per-day alias of 102.8 min, and a semiamplitude of ≍270 km s-1 at Hβ and ≍390 km s-1 at He II λ4686. The spectroscopic appearance (H I Balmer, Ca II, He I, He II emission lines), the orbital period, and the velocity amplitude indicate that this cataclysmic variable is probably an AM Her type; the absence of cyclotron humps indicates …

The Mass Distribution In The Nearby Universe, Luiz N. Da Costa, Wolfram Freudling, Gary Wegner, Riccardo Giovanelli Sep 1996

The Mass Distribution In The Nearby Universe, Luiz N. Da Costa, Wolfram Freudling, Gary Wegner, Riccardo Giovanelli

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present a new reconstruction of the mass density and the peculiar velocity fields in the nearby universe using recent measurements of Tully-Fisher distances for a sample of late spirals. We find significant differences between our reconstructed fields and those obtained in earlier work: overdensities tend to be more compact while underdense regions, consisting of individual voids, are more abundant. Our results suggest that voids observed in redshift surveys of galaxies represent real voids in the underlying matter distribution. While we detect a bulk velocity of ~300 km s-1, within a top-hat window 6000 km s-1 in …

The Peculiar Motions Of Early-Type Galaxies In Two Distant Regions. I. Cluster And Galaxy Selection, Gary Wegner, Matthew Colless, Glenn Baggley, Roger L. Davies Sep 1996

The Peculiar Motions Of Early-Type Galaxies In Two Distant Regions. I. Cluster And Galaxy Selection, Gary Wegner, Matthew Colless, Glenn Baggley, Roger L. Davies

Dartmouth Scholarship

The EFAR project is a study of 736 candidate elliptical galaxies in 84 clusters lying in two regions, toward Hercules-Corona Borealis and Perseus-Pisces-Cetus, at distances cz ~ 6000-15,000 km s^-1^. In this paper (the first of a series), we present an introduction to the EFAR project and describe in detail the selection of the clusters and galaxies in our sample. Fundamental data for the galaxies and clusters are given, including accurate new positions for each galaxy and redshifts for each cluster. The galaxy selection functions are determined by using diameters measured from Schmidt sky survey images for 2185 galaxies in …

A Test Of The Lauer-Postman Bulk Flow, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, Gary Wegner, Luiz N. Da Costa Jun 1996

A Test Of The Lauer-Postman Bulk Flow, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, Gary Wegner, Luiz N. Da Costa

Dartmouth Scholarship

We use Tully-Fisher distances for a sample of field late spiral galaxies to test the Lauer & Postman result suggestive of a bulk flow with respect to the cosmic microwave background reference frame, of amplitude of +689 km s-1 in the direction l = 343°, b = +52°. A total of 432 galaxies are used, subdivided between two cones, of 30° semiaperture each and pointed toward the apex and antapex of the LP motion, respectively. The peculiar velocities in the two data sets are inconsistent with a bulk flow of the amplitude claimed by Lauer & Postman. When combined …

Discovery Of A White Dwarf Companion (Ms0354.6-3650 = Euve J0356-366) To A G2v Star, Damian J. Christian, Stephane Vennes, John R. Thorstensen, Mihalis Mathioudakis Jun 1996

Discovery Of A White Dwarf Companion (Ms0354.6-3650 = Euve J0356-366) To A G2v Star, Damian J. Christian, Stephane Vennes, John R. Thorstensen, Mihalis Mathioudakis

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present x-ray, ultraviolet, and optical observations of the mysterious EUV/soft x-ray source EUVE J0356-336 (= MS0354.6-3650). Initial Einstein observations identified this source with a cluster of galaxies, but the relatively high source count rate in the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) 100 Å band and the lack of variability hinted that EUVE J0356-3650 might be a white dwarf; the UK Schmidt plate of the field surrounding this object found a 12.45 magnitude G2V star that could hide a compact companion. This hypothesis was confirmed in an IUE ultraviolet spectrum that shows the definite signature of a hydrogen-rich white dwarf (DA). …

Absence Of Open Strings In A Lattice-Free Simulation Of Cosmic String Formation, Julian Borrill Apr 1996

Absence Of Open Strings In A Lattice-Free Simulation Of Cosmic String Formation, Julian Borrill

Dartmouth Scholarship

Lattice-based string formation algorithms can, at least in principle, be reduced to the study of the statistics of the corresponding aperiodic random walk. Since in three or more dimensions such walks are transient, this approach necessarily generates a population of open strings. To investigate whether open strings are an artifact of the lattice we develop an alternative lattice-free simulation of string formation. Replacing the lattice with a graph generated by a minimal dynamical model of a first-order phase transition we obtain results consistent with the hypothesis that the energy density in string is due to a scale-invariant Brownian distribution of …

An Optical And X-Ray Study Of Abell 576, A Galaxy Cluster With A Cold Core, Joseph J. S. Mohr, Margaret J. Geller, Daniel G. Fabricant, Gary Wegner, John Thorstensen, Douglas O. Richstone Apr 1996

An Optical And X-Ray Study Of Abell 576, A Galaxy Cluster With A Cold Core, Joseph J. S. Mohr, Margaret J. Geller, Daniel G. Fabricant, Gary Wegner, John Thorstensen, Douglas O. Richstone

Dartmouth Scholarship

We analyze the galaxy population and dynamics of the galaxy cluster A576; the observational constraints include 281 redshifts (230 new), R- band CCD galaxy photometry over a 2 h^-1^ Mpc x 2 h^-1^ Mpc region centered on the cluster, an Einstein IPC X-ray image, and an Einstein MPC X-ray spectrum. We focus on an 86% complete magnitude-limited sample (R_23.5_ < 17) of 169 cluster galaxies. The cluster galaxies with emission lines in their spectra have a larger velocity dispersion and are significantly less clustered on this 2 h^-1^ Mpc scale than galaxies without emission lines. We show that excluding the emission-line galaxies from the cluster sample decreases the velocity dispersion by 18% and the virial mass estimate by a factor of 2. The central cluster region contains a nonemission galaxy population and an intracluster medium which is significantly cooler (σ_core_ = 387_-105_^+250^ km s^-1^ and T_x_ = 1.6_-0.3_^+0.4^ keV at 90% confidence) than the global populations (σ = 977_-96_^+124^ km s^- 1^ for the nonemission population and T_X_ > 4 keV at 90% confidence). Because (1) the low-dispersion galaxy population is no more luminous than the global population and (2) the evidence for a cooling flow is weak, we suggest that the core of A576 may contain the remnants of …

The Orbital Period Of Bk Lyncis (Pg 0917 + 342), F. A. Ringwald, J. R. Thorstensen, R. K. Honeycutt, J. W. Robertson Jan 1996

The Orbital Period Of Bk Lyncis (Pg 0917 + 342), F. A. Ringwald, J. R. Thorstensen, R. K. Honeycutt, J. W. Robertson

Dartmouth Scholarship

Long-term light curves of the cataclysmic variable BK Lyn = PG 0917 + 342 from the Indiana Automated CCD photometric telescope (‘RoboScope’) and the Harvard College Observatory plate archive reveal no dwarf nova outbursts. Two radial velocity studies show its orbital period to be 107.97 ;1 0.07 min, confirming that it does have an orbital period shorter than the period gap for cataclysmic variables. Whether this is the first nova-like variable below the period gap or a dwarf nova with rare outbursts resembling WZ Sge is still unclear, however.

A Rosat Hri Observation Of The Supernova Remnant G109.1 – 1.0, Alan P. Hurford, Robert A. Fesen Nov 1995

A Rosat Hri Observation Of The Supernova Remnant G109.1 – 1.0, Alan P. Hurford, Robert A. Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present results of a search using ROSAT HRI data for X-ray spatial substructures in the galactic supernova remnant G109.1 – 1.0 which might indicate a connection between the remnant’s bright X-ray blob and its X-ray pulsar, 1E2259 + 586. A 0.1 – 2.4 keV HRI image, created by combining separate 28- and 22-ks pointings, reveals the presence of a few small-scale X-ray features, including a NE-SW emission ridge in the remnant’s X-ray blob. Two diffuse knots in the X-ray blob, previously suggested as being aligned with the X-ray pulsar, appear to be statistical fluctuations in the Einstein HRI data. …

Determination Of Malmquist Bias And Selection Effects From Monte Carlo Simulations, Wolfram Freudling, Luiz N. Da Costa, Gary Wegner, Riccardo Giovanelli Aug 1995

Determination Of Malmquist Bias And Selection Effects From Monte Carlo Simulations, Wolfram Freudling, Luiz N. Da Costa, Gary Wegner, Riccardo Giovanelli

Dartmouth Scholarship

Maps of the peculiar velocity field derived from distance relations are affected by Malmquist type bias and selection effects. Because of the large number of interdependent effects, they are in most cases difficult to treat analytically. Monte Carlo simulations are used to understand and evaluate these effects. In these simulations the "true" spatial distribution and relevant properties of galaxies as well as selection effects and observational uncertainties are realistically modeled. The results of the simulation can be directly applied to correct observed peculiar velocity maps. The simulation is used to investigate biases in samples of measured peculiar velocities by Lynden-Bell …

Discovery Of Extreme-Ultraviolet Radiation From The Seyfert Galaxy Ton S180 (=Euve J0057−223), Stéphane Vennes, Elisha Polomski, Stuart Bowyer, John R. Thorstensen Jul 1995

Discovery Of Extreme-Ultraviolet Radiation From The Seyfert Galaxy Ton S180 (=Euve J0057−223), Stéphane Vennes, Elisha Polomski, Stuart Bowyer, John R. Thorstensen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We report the detection of intense EUV radiation from the Seyfert 1 galaxy Ton S180. The source EUVE J0057-223, discovered in the Extreme-Ultraviolet Explorer all-sky survey, is only 25'' away from its optical counterpart, well within the position error circle. We present a complete broadband energy distribution of Ton S180 using infrared (IRAS), optical, ultraviolet (IUE) and X-ray (ROSAT) flux measurements, and we find that the measured EUV flux, corrected for neutral hydrogen and helium absorption in the Galaxy, suggests the presence of a strong EUV to soft X-ray flux excess. We briefly discuss …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Several pre-cataclysmic binaries, comprising a hot white dwarf with a red dwarf companion, have been discovered as a result of the optical identification of EUV sources from the ROSAT all-sky survey. The optical spectra have the steep blue continuum and Balmer absorption typical of a hot white dwarf, but there are bright, narrow emission lines of H I (and sometimes He I and Ca II) superimposed. An intense campaign of follow-up observations has been devoted to these binary systems. So far, only RE 2013+400 has exhibited any measurable changes in the radial velocities of the emission components, from which it …

Orbital Studies Of The Cataclysmic Variables Cz Orionis, V1193 Orionis And Bz Ursae Majoris, F. A. Ringwald, J. R. Thorstensen, R. M. Hamwey

Dartmouth Scholarship

Time-resolved spectroscopy reveals the orbital periods of three cataclysmic variables. CZ Ori has an orbital period of 0.2189 d. This is within 3 per cent of a prediction relating orbital period and dwarf nova outburst decline time. We find the M2.5 ± 1.0 secondary, and infer an absolute magnitude for CZ Ori in RKc of 8.5 ± 1.0 and a distance of 260 ± 110 pc. V1193 Ori, also called Hamuy's Blue Variable, has an orbital period of 0.165 d. In 1988, Ha emission line profile variations suggested red star illumination. In 1989, this line's red wing flared at orbital …

Photoelectric And Ccd Photometry Of E And S0 Galaxies, M. Colless, D. Burstein, G. Wegner, R. P. Saglia May 1993

Photoelectric And Ccd Photometry Of E And S0 Galaxies, M. Colless, D. Burstein, G. Wegner, R. P. Saglia

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present BR photoelectric photometry for 352 E and S0 galaxies that are part of a large survey of the properties and peculiar motions of galaxies in distant clusters. Repeat measurements show our internal errors to be 2 – 3 per cent in B and R and 1 – 2 per cent in BR. Comparisons of BR and BVR reductions for 10 galaxies also observed in V show small systematic errors due to differences between the spectral energy distributions of stars and galaxies. External comparisons with B– V colours in the literature confirm that these colours are …

Distinguishing A Charged Higgs Signal From A Heavy Wr Signal, David I. Kaiser Mar 1993

Distinguishing A Charged Higgs Signal From A Heavy Wr Signal, David I. Kaiser

Dartmouth Scholarship

It is shown that non-Standard Model bosons should obey an observable asymmetry in their decays to taus. This asymmetry enables a distinction to be made between charged Higgsboson signalsand heavy right-handed Wboson signals,by reconstructing the orientation of the z with respect to the beam axis.

The 14.8-H Orbital Period Of Gx339-4, P. J. Callanan, P. A. Charles, W. B. Honey, J. R. Thorstensen Jan 1992

The 14.8-H Orbital Period Of Gx339-4, P. J. Callanan, P. A. Charles, W. B. Honey, J. R. Thorstensen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present the results of photometric observations of the black hole candidate GX339-4, obtained while the system was in an 'off' state. We show that a 14.8-h modulation was present, and provide evidence for a similar periodicity in the 'high' state from a reanalysis of previously published photometry and spectroscopy. The presence of the same period in both states implies that it is likely to be the orbital period of the system. The spectroscopy analysis provides evidence for an apparent change in the systemic velocity of the system. The amplitude of the observed radial velocity variations, however, permits only crude …

Dartmouth Scholarship

A high-resolution ultraviolet spectrum of the helium-rich degenerate LDS 678A, obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite, is presented. LDS 678A is the coolest metallic line degenerate (DQ or DZ) yet observed with the IUE echelle. These observations provide a detailed line profile of the strong C I 2479 absorption line and equivalent width W2479 = 2.35 + or - 0.06 A from which theoretical profile fits yield a carbon abundance of log C/He = (-6.7 + or- 0.2). The presence of carbon in a He-rich atmosphere lends credence to the notion that LDS 678A is a transitional case …

Optical Variability Of The Black Hole Candidate Gx339-4 (X1659-487, V821 Ara) - Limits On Periodic Modulation, R. H. D. Corbet, J. R. Thorstensen, P. A. Charles, W. B. Honey Aug 1987

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present results of extensive CCD optical photometry (over 1000 frames representing ~150 hr of integration time) of the optical counterpart of the X-ray source GX339–4 obtained during the high (soft) state. The source was seen to be significantly variable. We do not, however, detect any periodic modulation with semi-amplitude greater than ~0.03 mag for periods less than ~0.5 day or semi-amplitude greater than ~0.07 mag for longer periods. An optical spectrum obtained shortly after GX339–4 made a transition from a ‘low’ to a ‘high’ state is also presented and compared with previous results. The width of the He II …

The Orbital Period Of The Optical/X-Ray Burster X1735-444 (V926 Sco), R. H. D. Corbet, J. R. Thorstensen, P. A. Charles, J. W. Menzies Sep 1986

The Orbital Period Of The Optical/X-Ray Burster X1735-444 (V926 Sco), R. H. D. Corbet, J. R. Thorstensen, P. A. Charles, J. W. Menzies

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present extensive CCD photometry of the optical counterpart of X1735–444 which reveals the orbital period of the system. It is periodically variable with a period of 4.654 hr and a full amplitude of 0.15 mag. The mean modulation is quasi-sinusoidal; there are, however, also significant intrinsic deviations from the mean light curve.

Spectroscopic Studies Of 4u1735 – 44; Evidence For Binary Motion, A. P. Smale, P. A. Charles, I. R. Tuohy, J. R. Thorstensen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have obtained optical spectroscopy of the X-ray burst source 4U1735 – 44 with spectral resolution of ∼ 1.6 Å and a time resolution of ∼ 30 min. There is strong evidence for cyclic He II velocity variations, but we are unable to confirm or deny either of the previously reported possible binary periodicities in the source. However, kinematic arguments suggest that the companion can be classified as being of spectral type F0–K5 V and the presence of the Ca II K interstellar absorption line at λ 3933 leads to a lower limit on the distance of the source of …

Photometric And Spectroscopic Observations Of An Optical Candidate For The X-Ray Source H 0544 - 665, M. Van Der Klis, J. Van Paradijs, P. A. Charles, J. R. Thorstensen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present the results of spectroscopic and UBV observations of the brightest star in the error box of the X-ray source H 0544–665. This object is a B0–1 V star and a member of the LMC. It shows correlated variations in brightness and colour indices. We suggest that it is a Be-type star observed during a stage of low emission strength. Although a relation between this star and the X-ray source has still to be proven the present data add considerable support to the proposed identification.

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present optical spectroscopy and photometry and IUE spectroscopy of the counterpart of the extremely powerful LMC recurrent X-ray transient A0538 – 66. During one 16.6 day outburst cycle at the end of 1980 December the optical spectra show steadily increasing Balmer and He I emission (indicative of an expanding envelope) superposed on a B2 III–IV spectrum. There is a substantial optical brightness increase of 2 mag at the peak, accompanied by the sudden turn-on of He IIλ 4686. These and other optical spectra show significant radial velocity changes but we can find no clear correlation with the 16.6 …
