Study Of Behaviour Change And Impact On Infectious Disease Dynamics By Mathematical Models, Tianyu Cheng
Study Of Behaviour Change And Impact On Infectious Disease Dynamics By Mathematical Models, Tianyu Cheng
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis uses mathematical models to study human behaviour changes' effects on infectious disease transmission dynamics. It centers on two main topics. The first concerns how behaviour response evolves during epidemics and the effects of adaptive precaution behaviour on epidemics. The second topic is how to build general framework models incorporating human behaviour response in epidemiological modelling.
In the first project, based on the fact that a fraction of the epidemiologically susceptible population is actually susceptible due to precautions, we present a novel perspective on understanding the infection force, incorporating human protection behaviours. This view explains many existing infection force …
Rigid Body Constrained Motion Optimization And Control On Lie Groups And Their Tangent Bundles, Brennan S. Mccann
Rigid Body Constrained Motion Optimization And Control On Lie Groups And Their Tangent Bundles, Brennan S. Mccann
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Rigid body motion requires formulations where rotational and translational motion are accounted for appropriately. Two Lie groups, the special orthogonal group SO(3) and the space of quaternions H, are commonly used to represent attitude. When considering rigid body pose, that is spacecraft position and attitude, the special Euclidean group SE(3) and the space of dual quaternions DH are frequently utilized. All these groups are Lie groups and Riemannian manifolds, and these identifications have profound implications for dynamics and controls. The trajectory optimization and optimal control problem on Riemannian manifolds presents significant opportunities for theoretical development. Riemannian optimization is an attractive …

Efficient And Secure Digital Signature Algorithm (Dsa), Nissa Mehibel, M'Hamed Hamadouche
Emirates Journal for Engineering Research
The digital signature is used to ensure the integrity of messages as well as the authentication and non-repudiation of users. Today it has a very important role in information security. Digital signature is used in various fields such as e-commerce and e-voting, health, internet of things (IOT). Many digital signature schemes have been proposed, depending on the computational cost and security level. In this paper, we analyzed a recently proposed digital signature scheme based on the discrete logarithm problem (DLP). Our analysis shows that the scheme is not secure against the repeated random number attack to determine the secret keys …
Proposing A Measure Of Ethicality For Humans And Ai, Alejandro Jorge Napolitano Jawerbaum
Proposing A Measure Of Ethicality For Humans And Ai, Alejandro Jorge Napolitano Jawerbaum
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Smarter people or intelligent machines are able to make more accurate inferences about their environment and other agents more efficiently than less intelligent agents. Formally: ‘Intelligence measures an agent’s ability to achieve goals in a wide range of environments.’ (Legg, 2008)
In this dissertation we extend this definition to include ethical behaviour and we will offer a mathematical formalism and a way to estimate how ethical an action is or will be, both for a human and for a computer, by calculating the expected values of random variables. Formally, we propose the following measure of ethicality, which is computable, or …
A Comparison Of Computational Perfusion Imaging Techniques, Shaharina Shoha
A Comparison Of Computational Perfusion Imaging Techniques, Shaharina Shoha
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Dynamic contrast agent magnetic resonance perfusion imaging plays a vital role in various medical applications, including tumor grading, distinguishing between tumor types, guiding procedures, and evaluating treatment efficacy. Extracting essential biological parameters, such as cerebral blood flow (CBF), cerebral blood volume (CBV), and mean transit time (MTT), from acquired imaging data is crucial for making critical treatment decisions. However, the accuracy of these parameters can be compromised by the inherent noise and artifacts present in the source images.
This thesis focuses on addressing the challenges associated with parameter estimation in dynamic contrast agent magnetic resonance perfusion imaging. Specifically, we aim …
Dna Self-Assembly Of Trapezohedral Graphs, Hytham Abdelkarim
Dna Self-Assembly Of Trapezohedral Graphs, Hytham Abdelkarim
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Self-assembly is the process of a collection of components combining to form an organized structure without external direction. DNA self-assembly uses multi-armed DNA molecules as the component building blocks. It is desirable to minimize the material used and to minimize genetic waste in the assembly process. We will be using graph theory as a tool to find optimal solutions to problems in DNA self-assembly. The goal of this research is to develop a method or algorithm that will produce optimal tile sets which will self-assemble into a target DNA complex. We will minimize the number of tile and bond-edge types …
Stability Of Cauchy's Equation On Δ+., Holden Wells
Stability Of Cauchy's Equation On Δ+., Holden Wells
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The most famous functional equation f(x+y)=f(x)+f(y) known as Cauchy's equation due to its appearance in the seminal analysis text Cours d'Analyse (Cauchy 1821), was used to understand fundamental aspects of the real numbers and the importance of regularity assumptions in mathematical analysis. Since then, the equation has been abstracted and examined in many contexts. One such examination, introduced by Stanislaw Ulam and furthered by Donald Hyers, was that of stability. Hyers demonstrated that Cauchy's equation exhibited stability over Banach Spaces in the following sense: functions that approximately satisfy Cauchy's equation are approximated with the same level of error by functions …
Multi-Commodity Flow Models For Logistic Operations Within A Contested Environment, Isabel Strinsky
Multi-Commodity Flow Models For Logistic Operations Within A Contested Environment, Isabel Strinsky
All Theses
Today's military logistics officers face a difficult challenge, generating route plans for mass deployments within contested environments. The current method of generating route plans is inefficient and does not assess the vulnerability within supply networks and chains. There are few models within the current literature that provide risk-averse solutions for multi-commodity flow models. In this thesis, we discuss two models that have the potential to aid military planners in creating route plans that account for risk and uncertainty. The first model we introduce is a continuous time model with chance constraints. The second model is a two-stage discrete time model …
Null Space Removal In Finite Element Discretizations, Pengfei Jia
Null Space Removal In Finite Element Discretizations, Pengfei Jia
All Theses
Partial differential equations are frequently utilized in the mathematical formulation of physical problems. Boundary conditions need to be applied in order to obtain the unique solution to such problems. However, some types of boundary conditions do not lead to unique solutions because the continuous problem has a null space. In this thesis, we will discuss how to solve such problems effectively. We first review the foundation of all three problems and prove that Laplace problem, linear elasticity problem and Stokes problem can be well posed if we restrict the test and trial space in the continuous and discrete finite element …
Asymptotic Cones Of Quadratically Defined Sets And Their Applications To Qcqps, Alexander Joyce
Asymptotic Cones Of Quadratically Defined Sets And Their Applications To Qcqps, Alexander Joyce
All Dissertations
Quadratically constrained quadratic programs (QCQPs) are a set of optimization problems defined by a quadratic objective function and quadratic constraints. QCQPs cover a diverse set of problems, but the nonconvexity and unboundedness of quadratic constraints lead to difficulties in globally solving a QCQP. This thesis covers properties of unbounded quadratic constraints via a description of the asymptotic cone of a set defined by a single quadratic constraint. A description of the asymptotic cone is provided, including properties such as retractiveness and horizon directions.
Using the characterization of the asymptotic cone, we generalize existing results for bounded quadratically defined regions with …

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a broad field of study that involves developing intelligent
machines that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. Machine
learning (ML) is often used as a tool to help create AI systems. The goal of ML is
to create models that can learn and improve to make predictions or decisions based on given data. The goal of this thesis is to build a clear and rigorous exposition of the mathematical underpinnings of support vector machines (SVM), a popular platform used in ML. As we will explore later on in the thesis, SVM can be implemented …
Solving The Cable Equation, A Second-Order Time Dependent Pde For Non-Ideal Cables With Action Potentials In The Mammalian Brain Using Kss Methods, Nirmohi Charbe
Master's Theses
In this thesis we shall perform the comparisons of a Krylov Subspace Spectral method with Forward Euler, Backward Euler and Crank-Nicolson to solve the Cable Equation. The Cable Equation measures action potentials in axons in a mammalian brain treated as an ideal cable in the first part of the study. We shall subject this problem to the further assumption of a non-ideal cable. Assume a non-uniform cross section area along the longitudinal axis. At the present time, the effects of torsion, curvature and material capacitance are ignored. There is particular interest to generalize the application of the PDEs including and …

Waste Treatment Facility Location For Hotel Chains, Dolores R. Santos-Peñate, Rafael R. Suárez-Vega, Carmen Florido De La Nuez
ITSA 2022 Gran Canaria - 9th Biennial Conference: Corporate Entrepreneurship and Global Tourism Strategies After Covid 19
Tourism generates huge amounts of waste. About half of the waste generated by hotels is food and garden bio-waste. This bio-waste can be used to make compost and pellets. In turn, pellets can be used as an absorbent material in composters and as an energy source. We consider the problem of locating composting and pellet-making facilities so that the bio-waste generated by a chain of hotels can be managed at or close to the generation points. An optimization model is applied to locate the facilities and allocate the waste and products, and several scenarios are analysed. The study shows that, …

An Lp-Based Characterization Of Solvable Qap Instances With Chess-Board And Graded Structures, Lucas Waddell, Jerry Phillips, Tianzhu Liu, Swarup Dhar
Faculty Journal Articles
The quadratic assignment problem (QAP) is perhaps the most widely studied nonlinear combinatorial optimization problem. It has many applications in various fields, yet has proven to be extremely difficult to solve. This difficulty has motivated researchers to identify special objective function structures that permit an optimal solution to be found efficiently. Previous work has shown that certain such structures can be explained in terms of a mixed 0-1 linear reformulation of the QAP known as the level-1 reformulation-linearization-technique (RLT) form. Specifically, the objective function structures were shown to ensure that a binary optimal extreme point solution exists to the continuous …
Complex-Valued Approach To Kuramoto-Like Oscillators, Jacqueline Bao Ngoc Doan
Complex-Valued Approach To Kuramoto-Like Oscillators, Jacqueline Bao Ngoc Doan
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The Kuramoto Model (KM) is a nonlinear model widely used to model synchrony in a network of oscillators – from the synchrony of the flashing fireflies to the hand clapping in an auditorium. Recently, a modification of the KM (complex-valued KM) was introduced with an analytical solution expressed in terms of a matrix exponential, and consequentially, its eigensystem. Remarkably, the analytical KM and the original KM bear significant similarities, even with phase lag introduced, despite being determined by distinct systems. We found that this approach gives a geometric perspective of synchronization phenomena in terms of complex eigenmodes, which in turn …

The proposed seating chart optimization not only addresses the placement of guests but also determines the number of tables required for the reception. The …
The Magnetic Field Of Protostar-Disk-Outflow Systems, Mahmoud Sharkawi
The Magnetic Field Of Protostar-Disk-Outflow Systems, Mahmoud Sharkawi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Recent observations of protostellar cores reveal complex magnetic field configurations that are distorted in the innermost disk region. Unlike the prestellar phase, where the magnetic field geometry is simpler with an hourglass configuration, magnetic fields in the protostellar phase are sculpted by the formation of outflows and rapid rotation. This gives rise to a significant azimuthal (or toroidal) component that has not yet been analytically modelled in the literature. Moreover, the onset of outflows, which act as angular momentum transport mechanisms, have received considerable attention in the past few decades. Two mechanisms: 1) the driving by the gradient of a …
Topological Data Analysis Of Weight Spaces In Convolutional Neural Networks, Adam Wagenknecht
Topological Data Analysis Of Weight Spaces In Convolutional Neural Networks, Adam Wagenknecht
Dissertations
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have become one of the most commonly used tools for performing image classification. Unfortunately, as with most machine learning algorithms, CNNs suffer from a lack of interpretability. CNNs are trained by using a training data set and a loss function to tune a set of parameters known as the layer weights. This tuning process is based on the classical method of gradient descent, but it relies on a strong stochastic component, which makes the weight behavior during training difficult to understand. However, since CNNs are governed largely by the weights that make up each of the …
Viscous Thin-Film Models Of Nanoscale Self-Organization Under Ion Bombardment, Tyler Evans
Viscous Thin-Film Models Of Nanoscale Self-Organization Under Ion Bombardment, Tyler Evans
Mathematics Theses and Dissertations
For decades, it has been observed that broad-beam irradiation of semiconductor surfaces can lead to spontaneous self-organization into highly regular patterns, sometimes at length scales of only a few nanometers. Initial theory was largely based on erosion and redistribution of material occurring on fast time scales, which are able to produce good agreement with certain aspects of surface evolution. However, further experimental and theoretical work eventually led to the realization that numerous effects are active in the irradiated target, including stresses associated with ion-implantation and the accumulation of damage leading to the development of a disordered, amorphous layer atop the …
Practical Implementation Of The Immersed Interface Method With Triangular Meshes For 3d Rigid Solids In A Fluid Flow, Norah Hakami
Practical Implementation Of The Immersed Interface Method With Triangular Meshes For 3d Rigid Solids In A Fluid Flow, Norah Hakami
Mathematics Theses and Dissertations
When employing the immersed interface method (IIM) to simulate a fluid flow around a moving rigid object, the immersed object can be replaced by a virtual fluid enclosed by singular forces on the interface between the real and virtual fluids. These forces represent the impact of the rigid motion on the fluid flow and cause jump discontinuities across the interface in the whole flow field. Then, the IIM resolves the fluid flow on a fixed computational domain by directly incorporating the jump conditions across the interface into numerical schemes. Previous development of the method is limited to simple smooth boundaries. …
