This article discusses the conceptual design, flight trajectory calculations, and utilization of the possible future horizontally-launched reusable Single-Stage-to-Orbit (SSTO) spaceplane for small payload short-duration manned/unmanned access to Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO). The 10,000 lb spaceplane would use 5,000 ft catapult-assist horizontal-launch facility and conduct powered approach and landing on conventional horizontal paved runways following the gliding atmospheric re-entry. To increase the economy of operation, the launch facility located at high elevations (4,000+ ft) equatorial region is required, such as, the plateaus in Kenya and Tanzania in Africa and/or Ecuador in South America. Diffusion maps are a modern mathematical tool that helps to find structure in large data sets - we present a new filtering technique that is based on the assumption that errors in the data are intrinsically random to isolate and filter errors and thus boost the efficiency of diffusion maps. Applications include data sets from medicine (the Cleveland Heart Disease Data set and the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Data set) and engineering (the Ionosphere data set).

In recent years, the Santa Monica Mountains (SMM) have been plagued by frequent wildfires which threaten the native chaparral species. Nonsprouting chaparral species are completely killed by a fire, but their seeds germinate in response to fire cues. Facultative sprouters both resprout after a wildfire and release seeds that germinate post-fire. This project is based on data collected since 1986 at a biological preserve adjacent to the Malibu campus of Pepperdine University with an average fire return interval of 7.5 years. Abstract

How do we find communities in a graph? How does this change if the graph is bipartite? The Louvain method maximizes links within communities and minimizes those between in order to determine an optimal grouping. Yet, because it may fail when bipartite restrictions are introduced, we have adjusted the null model so as to improve performance in these conditions.

Conclusion

Our Bipartite Louvain is more robust with respect to permutations of vertices than the standard Louvain. For our synthetic examples, Bipartite Louvain typically yields a higher modularity and uncovers the ground truth communities with a higher probability. In the …

Graph labeling has been an active area of research since 1967, when Rosa introduced the concept. Arguably, the biggest open conjecture in the field is referred to as the Ringel-Kotzig conjecture, which states that all trees admit a graceful labeling. In this talk, we will give a bit of background on the problem, as well as present our own results. Namely, that a certain infinite class of trees (called uniform k-distant trees) admits a graceful labeling.

Motivated by the Asiana Flight 214 crash in San Francisco this summer, this project focuses on modeling an emergency airplane evacuation. Our models are based on the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, where each agent's position is compared to a fitness function that describes the current environment. Each agent moves according to its knowledge of its own previous best position and the group's current best position. The static environment is modeled by a potential function that describes the layout of the airplane that includes the exits and physical barriers such as the seats. Computed tomography (CT) is image reconstruction of objects using computer processed transmission or reflection data, usually referred to as projection data, from x-ray scanning. This projection data is often modeled using line integrals, but x-rays are of finite width in reality, so the accuracy of the projection data can be improved if an area based approach is used instead. The research originated from the question of how many rows of soldiers or turrets could be placed and allow for all turrets to have a projectile path. We find the relationship between the safe radius for each turret/soldier and the number of rows for which each soldier will have a clear projectile path. As shown, we place turrets in a grid configuration in the Cartesian plane.

Our project investigates the future enrollment of undergraduates at UNLV in the entire university, the College of Science, and the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The method used for the forecast, is the well-known least-squares method, for which a mathematical description will be presented. Studies for the numerical error are pursued too. The study will include graphs that describe the past and future behavior for different parameter settings. Mathematical results obtained show that the university will continue to grow given the current trends of enrollment.

In an extreme binary black hole system, an orbit will increase its angle of inclination (i) as it evolves in Kerr spacetime. We focus our attention on the behaviour of the Carter constant (Q) for near-polar orbits. The value of Q for bound orbits is non-negative; and an increase in Q corresponds to an increase in i. For a Schwarzschild black hole, the polar orbit represents the boundary between the prograde and retrograde orbits at which Q is at its maximum value. We are computationally investigating fluid flow models for physically correct predictions of flow structures. Models based on the idea of filtering the small scales/structures and also the Navier-Stokes equations which are the fundamental equations of fluid flow, are numerically solved via the continuous finite element method. Crank-Nicolson and fractional-step theta scheme are used for the discretization of the time derivative, while the Taylor-Hood and Mini elements are used for the discretization is space. The effectiveness of these numerical discretizations in time and space are examined by studying the accuracy of fluid characteristics, such as drag, lift and pressure drop.
