The growing pollution in the environment and the negative shift in the global climate compel authorities to take action to protect the environment and human health. Transportation is one of the major contributors to this environmental decay. The harmful gases released to the air by the vehicles using petroleum fuel increase each day. One of the solutions is to make a gradual transition to electric vehicles. A major part of manufacturing an electric vehicle is to produce an efficient electric motor and battery for it. Reducing the manufacturing and operating costs of these components will result in reducing the overall …

Ranking Volatility In Building Energy Consumption Using Ensemble Learning And Information Entropy, Kunal Sharma, Jung-Ho Lewe
Georgia Journal of Science
Given the rise in building energy consumption and demand worldwide, energy inefficiency detection has become extremely important. A significant portion of the energy used in commercial buildings is wasted as a result of poor maintenance, degradation or improperly controlled equipment. Most facilities employ sensors to track energy consumption across multiple buildings. Smart fault detection and diagnostic systems use various anomaly detection techniques to discover point anomalies in consumption. While these systems work reasonably well in detecting equipment anomalies over short-term intervals, further exploration is needed in finding methods that consider long-term consumption to detect anomalous buildings. This paper presents a …

The Impact Of Advanced Treatment Technologies On The Engery Use In Satellite Water Reuse Plants, Jonathan R. Bailey, Sajjad Ahmad, Jacimaria Batista
Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research
With an ever-increasing world population and the resulting increase in industrialization and agricultural practices, depletion of one of the world’s most important natural resources, water, is inevitable. Water reclamation and reuse is the key to protecting this natural resource. Water reclamation using smaller decentralized wastewater treatment plants, known as satellite water reuse plants (WRP), has become popular in the last decade. Reuse plants have stricter standards for effluent quality and require a smaller land footprint (i.e., real estate area). They also require additional treatment processes and advanced treatment technologies. This greatly increases the energy consumption of an already energy intensive …

Carbon Footprint Of Machine Learning Algorithms, Gigi Hsueh
Senior Projects Spring 2020
With the rapid development of machine learning, deep learning has demonstrated superior performance over other types of learning. Research made possible by big data and high-end GPU's enabled those research advances at the expense of computation and environmental costs. This will not only slow down the advancement of deep learning research because not all researchers have access to such expensive hardware, but it also accelerates climate change with increasing carbon emissions. It is essential for machine learning research to obtain high levels of accuracy and efficiency without contributing to global warming. This paper discusses some of current approaches in estimating …

Phase change humidity control material (PCHCM) is a new kind of composite made of high performance PCM microcapsules and diatomite. The PCHCM composite can moderate the hygrothermal variations by absorbing or releasing both heat and moisture and significantly reduce the peak/valley values of indoor temperature and relative humidity. In this paper, a novel model is developed to evaluate the energy performance of office buildings with PCHCM. The model is validated by a series of experiments, and then applied to investigate the effect of PCHCM on energy consumption in different typical climates worldwide (i.e. Beijing, Paris, Atlanta, and Guangzhou). Results show …

An Efficient Hybrid Data Gathering Algorithm Based On Multihop And Mobile Elements In Wsns, Mukhtar Ghaleb, Shamala Subramaniam, Mohamed Othman, Zuriati Zukarnain
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Data gathering is a focal task in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that expends most of the sensor nodes' energy. Two factors that are considered essential in data gathering are latency and power consumption. The multihop data gathering approach proves that latency is minimized due to the speed of forwarding data to the base station. However, this may lead to increased power consumption and increased possibility of an emerging hotspot area. In contrast, data gathering based on a mobile element (ME) proves that power consumption is minimized due to avoiding relay data in extreme schemes. However, this may increase the latency …

Renewable Energy Consumption: Initiatives In Colorado And Washington, Robin K. Doroff
Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby
This paper examines the use of policy mechanisms to increase renewable energy consumption within the United States. In order to effectively measure the change of renewable energy consumption, I analyze two initiatives that promote energy consumption from renewable sources and overall increases in energy conservation. Colorado and Washington had approved initiatives in the years 2004 and 2006, respectively. Although the results are not entirely statistically significant, I find that the initiatives lead to increases in total renewable energy consumption and decreases in total energy use.

Energy-Aware Stochastic Scheduling Model With Precedence Constraints On Dvfs-Enabled Processors, Mohammad Sajid, Zahid Raza
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The stochastic scheduling of precedence-constrained jobs on a heterogeneous processor is a challenging problem that requires solutions with one or more optimized QoS parameters. In this work, an energy-aware stochastic algorithm is proposed to schedule the batch of precedence-constrained jobs on heterogeneous DVFS-enabled processors with the objective of optimizing turnaround time and energy consumption. The processing time of tasks in all jobs and their precedence-constraint times are governed by independent probability distributions. The performance of the proposed stochastic algorithm is compared with SHEFT and ECS based on randomly generated batches of different sizes. The experimental study reveals that the proposed …

This qualitative study investigates how biology majors explain energy consumption issues. In particular, we focus on two energy consumption activities that account for about two-thirds of global carbon dioxide emissions in 2011: burning fossil fuels for transportation and using electricity. We conducted in-depth clinical interviews with twenty U.S. students and twenty Chinese students. We compared these two groups of students in terms of two aspects of explanation: 1) naming scientific terms in the explanation, and 2) explaining an energy consumption issue. Regarding naming, we examined the frequency of naming different terms of scientific concepts and principles in students’ explanations. Regarding …

Aarpa: Combining Mobile And Power-Line Sensing For Fine-Grained Appliance Usage And Energy Monitoring, Nirmalya Roy, Nilavra Pathak, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
To promote energy-efficient operations in residential and office buildings, non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) techniques have been proposed to infer the fine-grained power consumption and usage patterns of appliances from power-line measurement data. Fine-grained monitoring of everyday appliances (such as toasters and coffee makers) can not only promote energy-efficient building operations, but also provide unique insights into the context and activities of individuals. Current building-level NILM techniques are unable to identify the consumption characteristics of relatively low-load appliances, whereas smart-plug based solutions incur significant deployment and maintenance costs. In this paper, we investigate an intermediate architecture, where smart circuit breakers provide …

The Impacts Of Varability In Temperature And Humidity On Electricity Consumption In New York State, Eric Adamchick
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
A seasonal harmonic linear regression approach is presented to model the seasonal and diurnal relationships between surface weather observations and electricity load data in New York State. The relationships between dry-bulb, dew point, and wet-bulb temperatures with electricity load were evaluated using the correlation coefficient to test the strength of the relationships, while the regression slope coefficient provided an interpretable scale for those relationships. We found that the strongest seasonal and diurnal relationships occur during boreal summer from the afternoon through the overnight hours, while similar but negative relationships are observed during the winter. Using the same seasonal harmonic linear …

A Regression Approach For Estimation Of Anthropogenic Heat Flux Based On A Bottom-Up Air Pollutant Emission Database, Sanghyun Lee, Stuart A. Mckeen, David J. Sailor
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A statistical regression method is presented for estimating hourly anthropogenic heat flux (AHF) using an anthropogenic pollutant emission inventory for use in mesoscale meteorological and air-quality modeling. Based on bottom-up AHF estimated from detailed energy consumption data and anthropogenic pollutant emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the US National Emission Inventory year 2005 (NEI-2005), a robust regression relation between the AHF and the pollutant emissions is obtained for Houston. This relation is a combination of two power functions (Y = aXb) relating CO and NOx emissions to AHF, giving a determinant …
