Developing Spatially Accurate Rainfall Predictions For The San Francisco Bay Area Through Case Studies Of Atmospheric River And Other Synoptic Events, Alison Bridger, Dung Nguyen, Sen Chiao
Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science
Rainfall patterns in the San Francisco Bay Area (SFBA) are highly influenced by local topography. It has been a forecasting challenge for the main US forecast models. This study investigates the ability of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to improve upon forecasts, with particular emphasis on the rain shadow common to the southern end of the SFBA. Three rain events were evaluated: a mid-season atmospheric river (AR) event with copious rains; a typical non-AR frontal passage rain event; and an area-wide rain event in which zero rain was recorded in the southern SFBA. The results show that, with …

A tectonic block of garnet quartzite in the amphibolite-facies melange of the Catalina Schist (Santa Catalina Island, California, USA) records the metasomatic pre-treatment of high-delta O-18 sediments as they enter the subduction zone. The block is primarily quartz, but contains two generations of garnet that record extreme oxygen isotope disequilibrium and inverse fractionations between garnet cores and matrix quartz. Rare millimeter-scale garnet crystals record prograde cation zoning patterns, whereas more abundant similar to 200-mu m-diameter crystals have the same composition as rims on the larger garnets. Garnets of both generations have high-delta O-18 cores (20.8 parts per thousand-26.3 parts per …
The Birth Of A Forearc: The Basal Great Valley Group, California, Usa, D. A. Orme, Kathleen D. Surpless
The Birth Of A Forearc: The Basal Great Valley Group, California, Usa, D. A. Orme, Kathleen D. Surpless
Kathleen D. Surpless
The Great Valley basin of California (USA) is an archetypal forearc basin, yet the timing, structural style, and location of basin development remain controversial. Eighteen of 20 detrital zircon samples (3711 new U-Pb ages) from basal strata of the Great Valley forearc basin contain Cretaceous grains, with nine samples yielding statistically robust Cretaceous maximum depositional ages (MDAs), two with MDAs that overlap the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary, suggesting earliest Cretaceous deposition, and nine with Jurassic MDAs consistent with latest Jurassic deposition. In addition, the pre-Mesozoic age populations of our samples are consistent with central North America sources and do not require a …

Wildfire Exposure To Critical Habitat Of Endangered And Threatened Species In California, Kristin Butcher
Wildfire Exposure To Critical Habitat Of Endangered And Threatened Species In California, Kristin Butcher
Master's Theses
Researchers, fire ecologists and wildlife managers are concerned about impact to endangered and threatened species and their critical habitat due to the projected increase in future wildfires. Wildfires have been studied in California for the last six decades and have been increasing at an alarming rate since the 1980’s. In this study, I use the 2018 spatial dataset for critical habitat of federally endangered and threatened species located in the state boundaries of California and compare it to a spatial dataset for wildfires that have occurred over the span of 32 years (1984 to 2016). Trends are derived from spatial …
Utilizing Compost For Carbon Sequestration: A Strategy For Climate Goals And Land Use Management, Sarah R. Koplowicz
Utilizing Compost For Carbon Sequestration: A Strategy For Climate Goals And Land Use Management, Sarah R. Koplowicz
Master's Projects and Capstones
In recent years, research has been developed for the use of compost combined with managed grazing (and manure) on grasslands (DeLonge et al, 2013) or rangelands, resulting in carbon sequestration from the atmosphere back into soil at a relatively high rate . The Marin Carbon Project (MCP) was established as a collaborative effort to analyze the potential effects of this technique for greenhouse gas mitigation. The MCP established that combining compost applications with managed livestock grazing benefits the soil health and native plant community, while simultaneously enabling carbon sequestration through the mechanisms of plant production and microbial activity. Additional recent …

1913 - Water Resources Of California, Part Iii, Water-Supply Paper 300
1913 - Water Resources Of California, Part Iii, Water-Supply Paper 300
Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
The water available for irrigation and domestic supply was the chief factor in the development of southern California, which then had a population of more than 1,000,000 people. The many mountain streams of California afforded abundant hydroelectric power, the utilization of which in manufacturing enterprises and in transportation had been made possible by the progress of electric-power transmission during the previous decade.
Information concerning the quantity of water carried by the streams had been and would continue to be an important factor in the development of these resources, for the fundamental importance of stream-flow data was so thoroughly recognized that …
1920 - Irrigation Of Twelve Million Acres In The Valley Of California; Robert Bradford Marshall
1920 - Irrigation Of Twelve Million Acres In The Valley Of California; Robert Bradford Marshall
Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
By 1920, California's potential wealth in land reached into billions of dollars; 12,000,000 acres of available agricultural lands remained practically untouched. Marshall proposed a large plan that would make the Valley of California the world's greatest garden. The engineering plans for such a project must be comprehensive, for their execution must not only assure the complete reclamation of 12,000,000 acres of valley lands but must also effectively and forever control the river floods and insure safe and continuous river navigation throughout the year. The hydro-electric current generated along most of the streams would furnish all the power necessary for construction …

1923 - Flow In California Streams, Bulletin No. 5, Appendix A, Report To The Legislature
Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
The legislature of 1921 appropriated $200,000 for an investigation of California's water resources by the State Department of Public Works, Division of Engineering and Irrigation. Accordingly, an engineering investigation was completed and a report on California's water resources transmitted to the legislature on January 1, 1923. The report addresses the geology, precipitation and run-off in California.
1921 - Petroleum Resources Of California, Bulletin 89
1921 - Petroleum Resources Of California, Bulletin 89
Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
By 1921, the increasing demand for petroleum and its products, and the inability of production to keep pace with requirements, for several years, resulted in widespread prospecting throughout the world for possible new oil fields. In California, "wild-cat" wells were being drilled in many localities, some of them in places where even a cursory inspection of the geology would tell the futility of looking for oil. This report aimed to furnish information as to the unfavorable as well as the favorable areas of development of additional petroleum resources in California. The purpose of the report was to briefly take stock …
1929 - California Irrigation Districts, Bulletin No. 21
1929 - California Irrigation Districts, Bulletin No. 21
Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
The investigation is an enlargement of a study outlined February, 1926, by the late state engineer, Wilbur F. McClure, and cooperating agencies. Work on the project was suspended in 1927 but was resumed early in 1928 at the request of the California Economic Research Council, whose committee on irrigation economics prepared the schedule used in the field investigation.
An earlier report on this subject by the same author covered the situation up to 1915, and was published as Bulletin 2 of the State Department of Engineering. This report, together with Bulletin 2, presented the most complete information it had been …

1994 - Agriculture, Water And California's Drought Of 1987-92, Kenneth W. Umbach.Pdf
Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
The purpose of this paper was to summarize the 1987-1992 drought in the context of agriculture and water in California, to examine the types of response that farmers and institutions could and did use, and to draw lessons from that experience. California would be challenged as it grappled with population growth and environmental concerns. In view of the demand on water supplies made by California's agricultural sector (77 to 80 percent of the "developed" water used in the state, it was especially important to review those responses.
