Are We Providing Preferred Floral Resources For Bees In Our Neighborhoods? : Assessing The Relationship Between Small Scale Vegetation Metrics And Bee Presence In Se Portland, Hailey Wallace
Dissertations and Theses
Bee pollinators can thrive in highly urbanized environments if their preferred floral resources and habitat types are available. Enhanced pollinator habitats are being created globally, with a large local effort in Portland, Oregon. This project determined if we were providing the most preferred floral resources at enhanced pollinator sites for bees, if floral resources were available throughout the season, and if differences in dietary preferences between native and honey bees would allow for the identification of "native bee floral resources" in South East Portland. Bee pollinators were monitored from June to August at three enhanced pollinator sites in South East …
Regional Modeling Of The Glaciers Of The North Cascades Mountains, Washington, Usa, Christina Eileen Gray
Regional Modeling Of The Glaciers Of The North Cascades Mountains, Washington, Usa, Christina Eileen Gray
Dissertations and Theses
Glaciers in the North Cascades store winter snowfall as ice and release it in late summer as melt, providing an important regional source of water and hydroelectric energy. The future of glaciers in the North Cascades, Washington, were evaluated using a regional glaciation model driven by the Community Climate System Model 4 global climate model. The climate model was coupled with three Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs), 2.6, 4.5, and 8.5. These RCPs provide a business-as-usual scenario (RCP 8.5), which assumes society makes little to no efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a best-case scenario (RCP 2.6) with strong attempts to …
Geothermometry Of H6 And L6 Chondrites And The Relationship Between Impact Processing And Retrograde Metamorphism, Michael Tyler Ream
Geothermometry Of H6 And L6 Chondrites And The Relationship Between Impact Processing And Retrograde Metamorphism, Michael Tyler Ream
Dissertations and Theses
Ordinary chondrites are the most common type of meteorite to fall to Earth and are composed of lithified primitive nebular materials which have experienced variable extents of thermal metamorphism and shock processing. They were subjected to radiogenic heating by incorporation of unstable short lived radionuclides such as 26Al in the early solar system.
The relationship between metamorphism and impact processing in ordinary chondrites is not fully understood. An unresolved issue in the study of ordinary chondrites is whether their original parent bodies were fragmented by impacts into rubble-pile bodies while they were still hot, or whether they retained their …

Attitudes, Behavior, And Archetypes In The Clackamas River Basin: A Model Of Water Customer Analysis And Outreach For Watershed Protection And Conservation, Daniel Close Larson
Dissertations and Theses
Fresh water resources around the globe are under threat of diminishing supply and quality due to rapid population growth, climate change, drought, and waste. This dissertation aims to address the protection of fresh water at the source, the tap, and how water customer attitudes influence protection and conservation using a watershed-wide lens. Using the Clackamas River Watershed which resides within the Portland Metropolitan Area (PMA), I seek to investigate water customer attitudes towards a source water protection program and their willingness to pay to support such an endeavor, attitudes and behaviors that result in household water conservation, and an exploration …
Sensors And Portable Instruments For Postharvest Agriculture, Ryan M. Lerud
Sensors And Portable Instruments For Postharvest Agriculture, Ryan M. Lerud
Dissertations and Theses
The sensing needs for the fresh produce industry can be split into two primary stages: during maturation in the field, also referred to as Precision Farming, and during storage and transport of the produce, or Postharvest Storage. This work seeks to improve the accuracy and reliability of commercially available electrochemical and spectroscopic sensors tailored to the sensing needs of the fresh produce industry. For electrochemical sensing, this study proposes the use of an inline filter to remove polar organic compounds, which can interfere with the readings of a platinum-based electrochemical sensor. A 50% improvement in measurement accuracy was achieved when …

Hydrologic Trends And Spatial Relationships Of Stream Temperature And Discharge In Urbanizing Watersheds In The Portland Metropolitan Area Of The Pacific Northwest, Emma Lee Brenneman
Dissertations and Theses
This study explores various relationships of streamflow and stream temperature over the Portland Metropolitan area in two urbanizing watersheds. Four stream temperature and discharge metrics were derived from USGS stream gauges in the Tualatin River and Johnson Creek watersheds and were analyzed for monotonic trends. Additionally, this study explored the sensitivity of stream temperature to air temperature and streamflow to assess where locations throughout the watershed may be more sensitive to these changes. Relationships among stream temperature, air temperature, and streamflow were assessed using linear and nonlinear bivariate regression for yearly values and summer months. Additionally, this study seeks to …
Scenes From The Swale: Investigating Spatial And Temporal Dimensions Of Nitrogen Cycling In Urban Stormwater Bioretention Facilities, Erin Nicole Looper
Scenes From The Swale: Investigating Spatial And Temporal Dimensions Of Nitrogen Cycling In Urban Stormwater Bioretention Facilities, Erin Nicole Looper
Dissertations and Theses
Urban development is transforming landscapes at unprecedented rates. Human activities and landscape modifications associated with urbanization extensively increase hydrologic demands and modify natural hydrologic systems; consequently, population growth occurring in urban areas increases pressure on water resources. Urban aquatic ecosystems are vulnerable to impacts associated with increased connectivity with urban surfaces and hydrologic changes that initiate long-term changes in receiving waterbodies. Nitrogen (N) loading from urban and suburban catchments to receiving surface waters can lead to impairment of aquatic ecosystems and is a concern in many cities with water quality issues. To improve urban water quality, cities are increasingly adopting …
Photoelectrochemical Catalysis Of Hydrogen Peroxide With Tellurium Containing Chromophores, James Eliott Lohman
Photoelectrochemical Catalysis Of Hydrogen Peroxide With Tellurium Containing Chromophores, James Eliott Lohman
Dissertations and Theses
Growing concerns over climate change and demand for energy worldwide have made development and implementation of alternative energy sources more necessary than ever. Many of the leading energy alternatives suffer from inconsistent energy production due to fluctuations in availability of natural resources, and the current methods of addressing the issue have tremendous ecological and social ramifications of their own. While fuels like hydrogen gas are providing some promise of relief, the scope of infrastructure changes necessary for implementation and the implicit hazards of the use of such fuels complicate their application as an immediate solution. However, hydrogen peroxide carries far …
Distribution And Origin Of Carbide In Ordinary Chondrites, Karla Rae Farley
Distribution And Origin Of Carbide In Ordinary Chondrites, Karla Rae Farley
Dissertations and Theses
To understand the occurrence and distribution of carbide minerals in ordinary chondrites, thirty meteorites were examined, twenty-eight ordinary chondrites and two iron meteorites. The occurrence of carbide, textures, and chemical compositions were examined in the 7 carbide-bearing meteorites. Two formation methods for carbide have been presented in previous research. These are aqueous alteration and shock heating, and they are examined for validity in this thesis. Additionally, one other formation method for carbide formation through impact and brecciation is put forth and examined. Textural differences between the carbide-magnetite assemblages (CMAs) observed by Krot et al., (1997) and those seen in this …
Context-Aware Wi-Fi Infrastructure-Based Indoor Positioning Systems, Huy Phuong Tran
Context-Aware Wi-Fi Infrastructure-Based Indoor Positioning Systems, Huy Phuong Tran
Dissertations and Theses
Large enterprises are often interested in tracking objects and people within buildings to improve resource allocation and occupant experience. Infrastructure-based indoor positioning systems (IIPS) can provide this service at low-cost by leveraging already deployed Wi-Fi infrastructure. Typically, IIPS perform localization and tracking of devices by measuring only Wi-Fi signals at wireless access points and do not rely on inertial sensor data at mobile devices (e.g., smartphones), which would require explicit user consent and sensing capabilities of the devices.
Despite these advantages, building an economically viable cost-effective IIPS that can accurately and simultaneously track many devices over very large buildings is …
Crumpled And Abraded Encryption: Implementation And Provably Secure Construction, Scott Sherlock Griffy
Crumpled And Abraded Encryption: Implementation And Provably Secure Construction, Scott Sherlock Griffy
Dissertations and Theses
Abraded and crumpled encryption allows communication software such as messaging platforms to ensure privacy for their users while still allowing for some investigation by law enforcement. Crumpled encryption ensures that each decryption is costly and prevents law enforcement from performing mass decryption of messages. Abrasion ensures that only large organizations like law enforcement are able to access any messages. The current abrasion construction uses public key parameters such as prime numbers which makes the abrasion scheme difficult to analyze and allows possible backdoors. In this thesis, we introduce a new abrasion construction which uses hash functions to avoid the problems …
Necessary Conditions For Stability Of Vehicle Formations, Pablo Enrique Baldivieso Blanco
Necessary Conditions For Stability Of Vehicle Formations, Pablo Enrique Baldivieso Blanco
Dissertations and Theses
Necessary conditions for stability of coupled autonomous vehicles in R are established in this thesis. The focus is on linear arrays with decentralized vehicles, where each vehicle interacts with only a few of its neighbors. Decentralized means that there is no central authority governing the motion. Instead, each vehicle registers only velocity and position relative to itself and bases its acceleration only on those data. Explicit expressions are obtained for necessary conditions for asymptotic stability in the cases that a system consists of a periodic arrangement of two or three different types of vehicles, i.e. configurations as follows: ...2-1-2-1 or …
A Characterization Of Structures Across The Hurricane Ridge Fault In The Southeastern Olympic Peninsula, Wa, Hamma Hamma River Transect, Veronica Catherine Biesiada
A Characterization Of Structures Across The Hurricane Ridge Fault In The Southeastern Olympic Peninsula, Wa, Hamma Hamma River Transect, Veronica Catherine Biesiada
Dissertations and Theses
The Olympic Mountains in northwestern Washington, USA are defined by the arcuate shape of the basaltic Crescent Formation (Fm.) that wraps a faulted and folded meta-sedimentary core. This area was developed through accretion and exhumation by subduction-related processes, but how this relates to the deformational history of the area is not fully understood. The region has been mapped geologically, however little focus has been placed on interpreting meso-scale structures. This study investigates structures along a transect where the Hamma Hamma River crosses the Hurricane Ridge Fault, which juxtaposes the meta-sedimentary core (west) and the basaltic Crescent Fm. (east). In the …
Localizing Little Landmarks With Transfer Learning, Sharad Kumar
Localizing Little Landmarks With Transfer Learning, Sharad Kumar
Dissertations and Theses
Locating a small object in an image -- like a mouse on a computer desk or the door handle of a car -- is an important computer vision problem to solve because in many real life situations a small object may be the first thing that gets operated upon in the image scene. While a significant amount of artificial intelligence and machine learning research has focused on localizing prominent objects in an image, the area of small object detection has remained less explored. In my research I explore the possibility of using context information to localize small objects in an …
Capillary Migration Of Large Confined Drops In Non-Wetting Wedges, Logan John Torres
Capillary Migration Of Large Confined Drops In Non-Wetting Wedges, Logan John Torres
Dissertations and Theses
When confined within containers or conduits, drops and bubbles migrate to regions of minimum energy by the combined effects of surface tension, surface wetting, system geometry, and initial conditions. Such capillary phenomena are exploited for passive phase separation operations in micro-fluidic devices on earth and macro-fluidic devices aboard spacecraft. Our study focuses on the migration and ejection of large inertial-capillary drops confined between tilted planar hydrophobic substrates. In our experiments, the brief nearly weightless environment of a drop tower allows for the study of such capillary dominated behavior for up to 10 mL water drops with migration velocities up to …
Localized Photoemission In Triangular Gold Antennas, Christopher M. Scheffler
Localized Photoemission In Triangular Gold Antennas, Christopher M. Scheffler
Dissertations and Theses
With the development of ultra-fast laser technology, several new imaging techniques have pushed optical resolution past the diffraction limit for traditional light-based optics. Advancements in lithography have enabled the straightforward creation of micron- and nanometer-sized optical devices. Exposing metal-dielectric structures to light can result in surface plasmon excitation and propagation along the transition interface, creating a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) response. Varying the materials or geometry of the structures, the plasmonic response can be tailored for a wide range of applications.
Photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) has been used to image excitations in micron-sized plasmonic devices. With PEEM, optical responses can …
The Impact Of Infrastructure On Habitat Connectivity For Wildlife, Leslie Lynne Bliss-Ketchum
The Impact Of Infrastructure On Habitat Connectivity For Wildlife, Leslie Lynne Bliss-Ketchum
Dissertations and Theses
While roads can present weak to complete barriers to wildlife, depending on the animal and traffic volume, mitigations such as under-crossings and green bridges on highways at least partially increase the permeability of the landscape to some of these species. The few studies evaluating the effectiveness of these structures for at least three years typically focused on a single species. Here, we monitored the crossing structure under Boeckman Road, in Wilsonville Oregon, for wildlife activity across summer seasons for ten years, since construction of the road and subsequent opening to traffic. This long-term multi-species dataset, which includes monitoring when the …
Jet Rebound From Hydrophobic Substrates In Microgravity, Karl Jeffrey Theodore Cardin
Jet Rebound From Hydrophobic Substrates In Microgravity, Karl Jeffrey Theodore Cardin
Dissertations and Theses
We experimentally investigate the phenomena of large jet rebound, a mode of fluid transfer following oblique jet impacts on hydrophobic substrates. We initially seek to describe the jet rebound regimes in tests conducted in the weightless environment of a drop tower. A parametric study reveals the dependence of the flow structure on the relevant dimensionless groups such as Reynolds number and Weber number defined on the velocity component perpendicular to the substrate. We show that significantly larger diameter jets behave similarly as much smaller jets demonstrated during previous terrestrial investigations is some parameter ranges while the flow is fundamentally different …
Spectral Clustering For Electrical Phase Identification Using Advanced Metering Infrastructure Voltage Time Series, Logan Blakely
Spectral Clustering For Electrical Phase Identification Using Advanced Metering Infrastructure Voltage Time Series, Logan Blakely
Dissertations and Theses
The increasing demand for and prevalence of distributed energy resources (DER) such as solar power, electric vehicles, and energy storage, present a unique set of challenges for integration into a legacy power grid, and accurate models of the low-voltage distribution systems are critical for accurate simulations of DER. Accurate labeling of the phase connections for each customer in a utility model is one area of grid topology that is known to have errors and has implications for the safety, efficiency, and hosting capacity of a distribution system. This research presents a methodology for the phase identification of customers solely using …
Knowing Without Knowing: Real-Time Usage Identification Of Computer Systems, Leila Mohammed Hawana
Knowing Without Knowing: Real-Time Usage Identification Of Computer Systems, Leila Mohammed Hawana
Dissertations and Theses
Contemporary computers attempt to understand a user's actions and preferences in order to make decisions that better serve the user. In pursuit of this goal, computers can make observations that range from simple pattern recognition to listening in on conversations without the device being intentionally active. While these developments are incredibly useful for customization, the inherent security risks involving personal data are not always worth it. This thesis attempts to tackle one issue in this domain, computer usage identification, and presents a solution that identifies high-level usage of a system at any given moment without looking into any personal data. …
Dc-Rts Noise: Observation And Analysis, Benjamin William Hendrickson
Dc-Rts Noise: Observation And Analysis, Benjamin William Hendrickson
Dissertations and Theses
Dark current random telegraph signal (DC-RTS) is a physical phenomenon that effects the performance of solid state image sensors. Identified by meta-stable stochastic switching between two or more dark current levels, DC-RTS is an emerging concern for device scientists and manufacturers as a limiting noise source. Observed and studied in both charge coupled devices (CCDs) and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors, the metastable defects inside the device structure that give rise to this switching phenomenon are known to be derived from radiation damage. An examination of the relationship between high energy photon damage and these RTS defects is presented and …
Evaluating The Impact And Distribution Of Stormwater Green Infrastructure On Watershed Outflow, Benjamin Fahy
Evaluating The Impact And Distribution Of Stormwater Green Infrastructure On Watershed Outflow, Benjamin Fahy
Dissertations and Theses
Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) has become a popular method for flood mitigation as it can prevent runoff from entering streams during heavy precipitation. In this study, a recently developed neighborhood in Gresham, Oregon hosts a comparison of various GSI projects on runoff dynamics. The study site includes dispersed GSI (rain gardens, retention chambers, green streets) and centralized GSI (bioswales, detention ponds, detention pipes). For the 2017-2018 water year, hourly rainfall and observed discharge data is used to calibrate the EPA's Stormwater Management Model to simulate rainfall-runoff dynamics, achieving a Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency of 0.75 and Probability Bias statistic of 3.3%. A …

Benzotriazoles are group of bicyclic heterocyclic compounds that contain three nitrogen atoms fused to a benzene ring. Along with their derivatives, they possess a wide range of properties. They are used in medical field, as they exhibit such properties as antibacterial, antiplasmoidal, antiprotozoal, antifungal and anti-inflammatory activities, among others. They are also used in various industries as herbicides, UV absorbers, deicing and antiicing agents and corrosion inhibitors, to list a few. Because of their wide range of applications, we designed a new two-step synthesis for the formation of N-1-aryl benzotriazoles. 1-Hydroxy-1H-benzotriazole N-oxides were synthesized using phenylboronic acid (PhB(OH) …
Snowmelt Detection On Alpine Glaciers Using Synthetic Aperture Radar Time Series, Corey Scher
Snowmelt Detection On Alpine Glaciers Using Synthetic Aperture Radar Time Series, Corey Scher
Dissertations and Theses
Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) glaciers serve as some of the most sensitive indicators of changes in global climate. These glaciers shape the hydrologic dynamics of river systems supplying freshwater to over 2 billion people throughout Asia and regulate the geochemistry of sensitive aquatic alpine ecosystems. As snowmelt onsets sooner, lasts longer, and snowfields retreat due to increases in global temperature, the hydrologic dynamics of catchments draining HKH threaten to change the availability of surface freshwater resources for nearly one fifth of the global population, disturb sensitive aquatic habitat, and precipitate hazards associated with glacier wasting. Informed planning and decision-making around …
Using Fundamental Properties Of Light To Investigate Photonic Effects In Condensed Matter And Biological Tissues, Laura A. Sordillo
Using Fundamental Properties Of Light To Investigate Photonic Effects In Condensed Matter And Biological Tissues, Laura A. Sordillo
Dissertations and Theses
Light possesses characteristics such as polarization, wavelength and coherence. The interaction of light and matter, whether in a semiconductor or in a biological sample, can reveal important information about the internal properties of a system. My thesis focuses on two areas: photocarriers in gallium arsenide and biomedical optics. Varying the excitation wavelength can be used to study both biological tissue and condensed matter. I altered the excitation wavelengths to be in the longer near-infrared (NIR) optical windows, in the shortwave infrared (SWIR) range, a wavelength region previously thought to be unusable for medical imaging. With this method, I acquired high …
Electrical Conductivity And Resistivity Study Of Heterogeneous Sediment In Inwood Hill Park, Manhattan, Ny, Rea A. Khaleda
Electrical Conductivity And Resistivity Study Of Heterogeneous Sediment In Inwood Hill Park, Manhattan, Ny, Rea A. Khaleda
Dissertations and Theses
The area near the inlet of Spuyten Duyvil Creek in Inwood Hill Park in New York City exhibits complex hydrological processes. The inlet is a tidal flat, which contains brackish water; a mixture of saltwater and freshwater. The area was modified by man, built on a shell bed and contains heterogeneous sediment. One field adjacent to the inlet contains several small sinkholes. Electrical resistivity and ground conductivity techniques were used in order to get an understanding of the hydrological processes of this field. It was hypothesized that the formation of the sinkholes is due to the tidal forcing of the …
Pressure, Temperature, And Stress Conditions Of Southern Alpine Fault (New Zealand) Mylonites, Jake T. Reitman
Pressure, Temperature, And Stress Conditions Of Southern Alpine Fault (New Zealand) Mylonites, Jake T. Reitman
Dissertations and Theses
The Alpine Fault, New Zealand, provides a unique window into the rheologic history of a seismically-active continental plate boundary. Due to lower exhumation rates along southern portions of the fault relative to the well-studied central Alpine Fault, deformation ages vary along strike by ~15 m.y.. Mylonites collected from two southern creeks near Haast, NZ, display a uniform recrystallized grain size of ~11 𝜇m in mylonitic quartz indicating differential stress values in the south of ~100 MPa, roughly twice the stress values observed in the central Alpine Fault. Constraints from Ti-in-quartz thermobarometry and Raman Spectroscopy of Carbonaceous Material (RSCM) indicate mylonitization …
An Overview And Evaluation Of Synthetc: A Statistical Model For Extra-Tropical Cyclones, Rafael Uryayev
An Overview And Evaluation Of Synthetc: A Statistical Model For Extra-Tropical Cyclones, Rafael Uryayev
Dissertations and Theses
Extratropical cyclones (ETCs) are the most common weather phenomena affecting the United States, Canada, and Europe. They can pose serious hazards over large swaths of area. In this thesis, a statistical model of ETCs, called SynthETC, is discussed. The model accounts for the for genesis, track path, termination, and intensity of statistically generated ETCs. Genesis is modeled as a Poisson process, whose mean is determined by climate and historical information. Tracks are modeled as a regression-mean determined by climate and historical information plus a stochastic component. Lysis is modeled using logistic regression, with climate states as covariates. Intensity is modeled …
Comparison Of Gold Extraction Yields By Cyanide Treatment Vs. Bioleaching Procedure, Yilman Steven Pineda
Comparison Of Gold Extraction Yields By Cyanide Treatment Vs. Bioleaching Procedure, Yilman Steven Pineda
Dissertations and Theses
Samples from the tailings of the Picacho mine in California were leached using NaCN and native bacteria, Alcaligenes faecalis, in column experiments to compare the gold recovery yields in the effluents. Four columns were treated with a different liquid: water, bacteria, NaCN and a mixture of cyanide and bacteria. After they were leached the effluents were analyzed to determine gold yields. During experiment I the total Au recovered in the effluent in the column treated with bacteria was only 10.09% less than those treated with cyanide (C2) and 81.7% more than the control. In experiment II, Au values measured were …
Carbonatites As A Record Of The Carbon Isotope Composition Of Large Igneous Province Outgassing, Ellen Gales
Carbonatites As A Record Of The Carbon Isotope Composition Of Large Igneous Province Outgassing, Ellen Gales
Dissertations and Theses
Large igneous province (LIP) eruptions have been linked in some cases to major perturbations of Earth’s carbon cycle. However, few observations directly constrain the isotopic composition of carbon released by LIP magmas because carbon isotopes fractionate during degassing, which hampers understanding of the relative roles of mantle versus crustal carbon reservoirs. Carbonatite magmatism associated with LIPs provides a unique window into the isotopic systematics of LIP carbon because the majority of carbon in carbonatites crystalizes rather than degassing. Here, we present new δ13C data for the Guli carbonatites in the Siberian Traps. In addition, we compile ~260 published …
