Reduction Of Iron (Iii) And Humic Substances Plays A Major Role In Anaerobic Respiration In An Arctic Peat Soil, David A. Lipson, Mony Jha, Ted K. Raab, Walter C. Oechel

Ted K. Raab

Arctic peat soils contain vast reserves of organic C and are largely anaerobic. However, anaerobic respiration, particularly the role of Fe(III) and humic substances as electron acceptors, is not well understood in such ecosystems. We investigated these processes in a drained thaw lake basin on the Arctic coastal plain near Barrow, Alaska. We measured concentrations of soluble Fe and other potential electron acceptors, described the microbial community, and performed experiments in the laboratory and field to measure net rates of Fe(III) reduction and the relationship of this process to C cycling. In most areas within the basin, aerobic conditions existed …

Leaching Mechanism Of Semiconducting Minerals, Fathi Habashi Dec 2010

Leaching Mechanism Of Semiconducting Minerals, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

The mechanism of leaching of semiconducting minerals such as PbS, ZnS, UO2, etc., has been the subject of intensive speculation by hydrometallurgists in the early 1950s. The electrochemical mechanism proposed in 1970 by the author in volume 2 of his Principles of Extractive Metallurgy avoids the assumption of forming intermediate complexes that cannot be isolated or identified.

Projection Of Diffraction Patterns For Use In Cold-Neutral-Atom Trapping, Katharina Gillen-Christandl, Glen D. Gillen Dec 2010

Projection Of Diffraction Patterns For Use In Cold-Neutral-Atom Trapping, Katharina Gillen-Christandl, Glen D. Gillen

Glen Gillen

Scalar diffraction theory is combined with beam-propagation techniques to investigate the projection of near-field diffraction patterns to spatial locations away from the aperture for use in optically trapping cold neutral alkali-metal atoms. Calculations show that intensity distributions with localized bright and dark spots usually found within a millimeter of the diffracting aperture can be projected to a region free from optical components such as a cloud of cold atoms within a vacuum chamber. Calculations also predict that the critical properties of the optical dipole atom traps are not only maintained for the projected intensity patterns but also can be manipulated …

Automated Breast Profile Segmentation For Roi Detection Using Digital Mammograms, Sameem Abdul Kareem Nov 2010

Automated Breast Profile Segmentation For Roi Detection Using Digital Mammograms, Sameem Abdul Kareem

Sameem Abdul Kareem

Mammography is currently the most effective imaging modality used by radiologists for the screening of breast cancer. Finding an accurate, robust and efficient breast profile segmentation technique still remains a challenging problem in digital mammography. Extraction of the breast profile region and the pectoral muscle is an essential pre-processing step in the process of computer-aided detection. Primarily it allows the search for abnormalities to be limited to the region of the breast tissue without undue influence from the background of the mammogram. The presence of pectoral muscle in mammograms biases detection procedures, which recommends removing the pectoral muscle during mammogram …

Morphogrammatics Of Reflection, Rudolf Kaehr Nov 2010

Morphogrammatics Of Reflection, Rudolf Kaehr

Rudolf Kaehr

Turning back from the studies of morphogrammatics to some open questions of reflectional programming, the recountered problematics might be put into a different light and new methods of handling formal aspects of reflection and reflectionality shall be introduced. Albeit the use of light-metaphors, morphogrammatic reflection is not sketched along the paradigm of optical metaphors. Morphograms are presenting neither propositions nor perceptions able for mirroring (representation). Exercises in defining morphogrammatic retro-grade recursion and reflection schemata are continued from the paper “Sketches to Morphogrammatic Programming”.

A Novel Totivirus And Piscine Reovirus (Prv) In Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar) With Cardiomyopathy Syndrome (Cms), Torstein Tengs Nov 2010

A Novel Totivirus And Piscine Reovirus (Prv) In Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar) With Cardiomyopathy Syndrome (Cms), Torstein Tengs

Dr. Torstein Tengs

BACKGROUNDCardiomyopathy syndrome (CMS) is a severe disease affecting large farmed Atlantic salmon. Mortality often appears without prior clinical signs, typically shortly prior to slaughter. We recently reported the finding and the complete genomic sequence of a novel piscine reovirus (PRV), which is associated with another cardiac disease in Atlantic salmon; heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI). In the present work we have studied whether PRV or other infectious agents may be involved in the etiology of CMS.RESULTSUsing high throughput sequencing on heart samples from natural outbreaks of CMS and from fish experimentally challenged with material from fish diagnosed with CMS …

On Nonparametric Comparison Of Images And Regression Surfaces, Xiao-Feng Wang, Deping Ye Oct 2010

On Nonparametric Comparison Of Images And Regression Surfaces, Xiao-Feng Wang, Deping Ye

Xiaofeng Wang

Multivariate local regression is an important tool for image processing and analysis. In many practical biomedical problems, one is often interested in comparing a group of images or regression surfaces. In this paper, we extend the existing method of testing the equality of nonparametric curves by Dette and Neumeyer (2001) and consider a test statistic by means of an L2-distance in the multi-dimensional case under a completely heteroscedastic nonparametric model. The test statistic is also extended to be used in the case of spatial correlated errors. Two bootstrap procedures are described in order to approximate the critical values of the …

Advanced biofuels will be developed using cellulosic feedstock rather than grain or oilseed crops that can also be used for food and feed. To be sustainable, these new agronomic production systems must be economically viable without degrading the soil and other natural resources. This review examines six agronomic factors that collectively define many of the limits and opportunities for harvesting crop residue for biofuel feedstock in the midwestern United States. The limiting factors include soil organic carbon, wind and water erosion, plant nutrient balance, soil water and temperature dynamics, soil compaction, and off-site environmental impacts. These are discussed in relationship …

A Short-Distance Integral-Balance Solution To A Strong Subdiffusion Equation: A Weak Power-Law Profile, Jordan Hristov Oct 2010

A Short-Distance Integral-Balance Solution To A Strong Subdiffusion Equation: A Weak Power-Law Profile, Jordan Hristov

Jordan Hristov

The work presents an integral solution of the time-fractional subdiffusion through a preliminary defined profile with unknown coefficients and the concept of penetration layer well known from the heat diffusion The profile satisfies the boundary conditions imposed at the boundary of the boundary layer in a weak form that allows its coefficients to be expressed through the boundary layer depth as unique parameter describing the profile. The technique is demonstrated by a solution of a time fractional subdiffusion equation in rectilinear 1-D conditions.

Silver Nanosphere Sers Probes For Sensitive Identification Of Pathogens, Kyuwan Lee Sep 2010

Silver Nanosphere Sers Probes For Sensitive Identification Of Pathogens, Kyuwan Lee

Kyuwan Lee

The identification and timely detection of pathogenic bacteria is critical to ensuring safe food, health, and water. Although surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) methods have been used for pathogen characterization and single molecule sensing, the challenge of detecting pathogens in very low numbers using an optimal substrate that is sensitive and reproducible is still a challenge. In this report, we have developed and explored a novel SERS active substrate of 60−80 nm diameter through the assembly of Ag nanocrystals (AgNCs) into Ag nanospheres (AgNSs). A finite difference time domain (FDTD) analysis of the electromagnetic field produced by these structures and …

Enhancing Stockmarket Trading Performance With Anns, Bruce Vanstone, Gavin Finnie Sep 2010

Enhancing Stockmarket Trading Performance With Anns, Bruce Vanstone, Gavin Finnie

Gavin Finnie

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been repeatedly and consistently applied to the domain of trading financial time series, with mixed results. Many researchers have developed their own techniques for both building and testing such ANNs, and this presents a difficulty when trying to learn lessons and compare results. In a previous paper, Vanstone and Finnie have outlined an empirical methodology for creating and testing ANNs for use within stockmarket trading systems. This paper demonstrates the use of their methodology, and creates and benchmarks a financially viable ANN-based trading system. Many researchers appear to fail at the final hurdles in their …

Health Benefits Of Increased Walking For Sedentary, Generally Healthy Older Adults: Using Longitudinal Data To Approximate An Intervention Trial, Paula Diehr Sep 2010

Health Benefits Of Increased Walking For Sedentary, Generally Healthy Older Adults: Using Longitudinal Data To Approximate An Intervention Trial, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

BACKGROUND: Older adults are often advised to walk more, but randomized trials have not conclusively established the benefits of walking in this age group. Typical analyses based on observational data may have biased results. Here, we propose a "limited-bias," more interpretable estimate of the health benefits to sedentary healthy older adults of walking more, using longitudinal data from the Cardiovascular Health Study. METHODS: The number of city blocks walked per week, collected annually, was classified as sedentary (<7 blocks per>week), somewhat active, or active (>or=28). Analysis was restricted to persons sedentary and healthy in the first 2 years. In Year …

Strengthening Strategic Environmental Assessment In Canada: An Evaluation Of Three Basic Options, Robert Gibson, Hugh Benevides, Meinhard Doelle, Denis Kirchhoff

Denis Kirchhoff

Canada has a long and diverse but largely disappointing record in integrating environmental and sustainability considerations into the development of policies, plans, programs and other strategic undertakings. For over 25 years, the federal government has had a policy-based strategic environmental assessment (SEA) process. In 2003, the deficiencies of this process led the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development to recommend establishment of a legislated framework for mandatory SEA before the 2010 Parliamentary review of environmental assessment. Governments since then have not acted on this recommendation but have promised to strengthen federal SEA. In this paper, we …
