Anyone associated with higher education will acknowledge that tenure track faculty have to perform a fantastic balancing act. Compared to an administrative or line role in an organization, higher education faculty have tremendous autonomy and freedom. However, they face competing demands of many different (and good) opportunities, and for them the stakes are always high. Help is here! This article introduces a powerful strategy for staying on track in the research strand of this competitive journey.
Background Fluorescence In Groundwater From A Tropical Karst Island Aquifer, Michelle Hoffman
Background Fluorescence In Groundwater From A Tropical Karst Island Aquifer, Michelle Hoffman
Michelle Hoffman
Background levels of four fluorescent compounds were monitored biweekly at thirteen sampling sites on Guam, consisting of subtidal and intertidal springs, dissolution fractures, and internal upland contact spring discharge, over a 13-month period from 2006 to 2007. Samples were compared to local precipitation and to seawater samples from four nearby reef flats. The data revealed that the concentrations of optical brighteners were consistently two orders of magnitude greater than either sodium fluorescein or rhodamine WT, while Eosine Y was rarely detected. Background levels in seawater, by comparison, accounted for 25% or more of the fluorescent compounds detected at the thirteen …

Heart And Skeletal Muscle Inflammation Of Farmed Salmon Is Associated With Infection With A Novel Reovirus, Torstein Tengs
Heart And Skeletal Muscle Inflammation Of Farmed Salmon Is Associated With Infection With A Novel Reovirus, Torstein Tengs
Dr. Torstein Tengs
Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) mariculture has been associated with epidemics of infectious diseases that threaten not only local production, but also wild fish coming into close proximity to marine pens and fish escaping from them. Heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI) is a frequently fatal disease of farmed Atlantic salmon. First recognized in one farm in Norway in 1999, HSMI was subsequently implicated in outbreaks in other farms in Norway and the United Kingdom. Although pathology and disease transmission studies indicated an infectious basis, efforts to identify an agent were unsuccessful. Here we provide evidence that HSMI is associated …

Using Clustering For Modeling Monthly Salary Grade, R. W. Hndoosh
R. W. Hndoosh
Clustering is considered as one of the most scientifically developments which the scientists reached at in the field of recent knowledge and technologies to discover the cluster's group. The clustering concept was introduced firstly by Ronald in 1955. The clustering's fundamental notion is represented in dividing the data into clusters. This research aims to using clustering for actual data modeling for the monthly salary grade of the teaching staff for one of the Mosul University's College in 2009, by using HCM algorithm to these data. Matlab software is used to write down the proposed algorithm programs. Results proved the efficiency …
Optimal Control Of A Switched System In Microbial Fed-Batch Fermentation Process, Chongyang Liu, Zhaohua Gong, Enmin Feng
Optimal Control Of A Switched System In Microbial Fed-Batch Fermentation Process, Chongyang Liu, Zhaohua Gong, Enmin Feng
Chongyang Liu
The main control goal in fed-batch fermentation process is to get a high concentration of production. In this paper, by taking the feed rate of glycerol as the control function, a nonlinear switched system is proposed to formulate the fed-batch fermentation process of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD). To maximize the concentration of 1,3-PD at the terminal time, an optimal switching control model subject to constraints of continuous state inequality and control function is presented. A computational approach is developed to seek the optimal solution in two aspects. On the one hand, the control parametrization enhancing transform together with the control …
Heat-Balance Integral To Fractional (Half-Time) Heat Diffusion Sub-Model, Jordan Hristov
Heat-Balance Integral To Fractional (Half-Time) Heat Diffusion Sub-Model, Jordan Hristov
Jordan Hristov
The fractional (half-time) sub-model of the heat diffusion equation, known as Dirac-like evolution diffusion equation has been solved by the heat-balance integral method and a parabolic pro file with unspecified exponent. The fractional heat-balance integral method has been tested with two classic examples: fixed temperature and fixed flux at the boundary. The heat-balance technique allows easily the convolution integral of the fractional half-time derivative to be solved as a convolution of the time-independent approximating function. The fractional sub-model provides an artificial boundary condition at the boundary that closes the set of the equations required to express all parameters of the …

Designing a GUI is not so easy as it may appear to outside. The developer has to face many difficulties while improving the features of a GUI. In many cases improving one feature of a GUI results in worsening another feature of it, thus leading to a situation known as contradiction in TRIZ. Many such contradictions have been solved by different inventors in the past. We will demonstrate some important contradictions in this article and discuss alternative solutions for each contradiction.

The paper presents an assessment of the impact of waste co-combustion in a cement kiln on air emissions of HCl and SO2 recorded continuously. The subject of the research was cement kiln (dry method) with a capacity of 8500 Mg/day, equipped with a four cyclone heat exchangers and a calciner with an additional chamber for co-incineration. In the analysed period alternative fuels (mainly waste) were used in various amounts ranging up to about 35 kg / Mg clinker (with the heat substitution up to 20%) in the kiln and calciner. Chlorine and sulfur inputs to the process were up to …
Non-Prejudiced Detection And Characterization Of Genetic Modifications, Torstein Tengs
Non-Prejudiced Detection And Characterization Of Genetic Modifications, Torstein Tengs
Dr. Torstein Tengs
The application of gene technology is becoming widespread much thanks to the rapid increase in technology, resource, and knowledge availability. Consequently, the diversity and number of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) that may find their way into the food chain or the environment, intended or unintended, is rapidly growing. From a safety point of view the ability to detect and characterize in detail any GMO, independent of publicly available information, is fundamental. Pre-release risk assessments of GMOs are required in most jurisdictions and are usually based on application of technologies with limited ability to detect unexpected rearrangements and insertions. We present …

Wouldn’t it be great to search social science literature via social networking platforms? Mark publications for the own library? Discuss and rate publications with the online-community? Forward and share publications with “friends”? View a publication’s annotation history? Tracking the paths a publication takes throughout the social graph by being marked, forwarded, reviewed or rated? Invite the authors of publications under study to the own social network? Enhance professional information portals by social information obtained from social networks? Apart from a conclusive concept to design the listed functions above several technical points are important. First of all the social networking platform …

Study Of Nano Structure Mn/Alumina Catalyst Deactivation Through Catalytic Oxidation Of O-Vocs, Hosein Afshary
Hosein Afshary
the deactivation and selectivity behavior of nanostructure Mn/γ-Al2O3 catalyst in catalytic oxidation of an O-VOC (isopropanol) was studied. The polluted air was simulated and the catalyst was tested in the course of 50-h time-on-stream. Characterization of fresh and used catalysts was done using FT-IR, XRD, SEM and EDS methods. Comparing the testing results of this catalyst and that of the industrial Pt/Al2O3 catalyst showed that prepared catalyst can be suitable for substitution with the expensive pt/Al2O3 catalyst in environmental applications.
An Essay On The Nature And Significance Of Deception And Telling Lies, Sudhanshu K. Mishra
An Essay On The Nature And Significance Of Deception And Telling Lies, Sudhanshu K. Mishra
Sudhanshu K Mishra
A lie is an expression at deviance with the truth known or honestly believed by someone with an intention to deceive others for certain purpose, social or personal. An ability to lie might be evolutionary in nature possibly to help in survival, since it is found in the non-human world also. In the biological perspective, each individual is at war against all others. Thus viewed, lies are the cardinal virtues for survival and, by implication, the carriers of evolution. In the human world, lying is morally blameworthy in a relatively un-obscure way. There may be cases of lying to which …

Reducing The Impact Of Ethnic Tensions On Economic Growth – Economic Or Political Institutions?, Atin Basu Choudhary, Jim Bang, Michael Reksulak
Atin Basu Choudhary
We use a standard growth regression model and show that ethnic tensions reduce per capita growth rates. We also find evidence that “good” economic and political institutions improve per capita growth rates. More importantly, good economic institutions mitigate the effect of ethnic tensions on per capita growth while good political institutions do not. Consequently, it is foremost capitalist freedom that promotes peace and development.

The Costs Of Residential Water Scarcity In Cyprus: Impact Of Climate Change And Policy Options, Theodoros Zachariadis
Theodoros Zachariadis
This paper presents an assessment of the costs of water scarcity in Cyprus, today and in the next twenty years, accounting also for the effect of projected climate change in the region. We focus on the residential sector, accounting also for tourism and industry. Using a simple demand function we first compute total scarcity costs in Cyprus for the entire period 2010¡V2030 for three scenarios of future water demand. Our central estimate shows that the present value of total costs due to water shortages in this period will amount to 72 million Euros (at 2009 prices), and if future water …

Memristics: Memristors, Again? – Part Ii, How To Transform Wired ‘Translations’ Between Crossbars Into Interactions?, Rudolf Kaehr
Rudolf Kaehr
The idea behind this patchwork of conceptual interventions is to show the possibility of a “buffer-free” modeling of the crossbar architecture for memristive systems on the base of a purely difference-theoretical approach. It is considered that on a nano-electronic level principles of interpretation appears as mechanisms of complementarity. The most basic conceptual approach to such a complementarity is introduced as an interchangeability of operators and operands of an operation. Therefore, the architecture of crossbars gets an interpretation as complementarity between crossbar functionality and “buffering” translation functionality. That is, the same matter functions as operator and at once, as operand – …

Incommensurability And Multi-Paradigm Grounding In Design Science Research: Implications For Creating Knowledge, Dirk S. Hovorka
Incommensurability And Multi-Paradigm Grounding In Design Science Research: Implications For Creating Knowledge, Dirk S. Hovorka
Dirk Hovorka
The ‘problem identification-design-build-evaluate-theorize’ structure of Design Science Research has been proposed as an approach to creating knowledge in information systems and in broader organizational and social domains. Although the approach has merit, the philosophical foundations of two specific components warrant attention. First, the grounding of design theory on potentially incommensurate kernel theories may produce incoherent design theory. In addition, the newly design theory has no strong logical connection to the kernel theories, and so cannot be used to test or validate the contributing kernel theories. Second, the philosophical grounding of evaluation may inadvertently shift from functionally-based measures of utility and …
