Ab initio and MNDO calculations have been carried out to evaluate the gas-phase acidities of closed-shell XHn compounds (X= C, N, 0, F, Si, P, S, Cl) and the affinities of silane for the XHn_1- anions. Fourth-order perturbation theory with extended basis sets reproduces the experimental gas-phase acidities to within 2 kcaljmol. Stable pentacoordinated silicon anions are found for X = H, C, N, 0, and F. In contrast, only marginally stable charge-dipole complexes are found for X = Si, S, and Cl.

On The Glass Transition And Viscosity Of Phosphorus Pentoxide, C. A. Angell, Steve W. Martin Dec 1986

On The Glass Transition And Viscosity Of Phosphorus Pentoxide, C. A. Angell, Steve W. Martin

Steve W. Martin

The calorimetric glass transition temperature Tg for pure anhydrous P2Os melted in sealed Si02 ampules at 1000 “C has been obtained directly for the first time with differential scanning calorimetry, and the increase in heat capacity at Tg has been determined. Tg measured in this way is 57 K higher than the value quoted in the literature, which is probably based on an Arrhenius law extrapolation of viscosity data to 9 = lOI3 P. Combining the high-temperature viscosity data with the common observation that, for oxide glasses, 7 = 10l2 P at the DSC Tg, we find that the P,O, …

The Homeo Domain Of A Murine Protein Binds 5' To Its Own Homeo Box., Abraham Fainsod, Leonard D. Bogarad, Tarmo Ruusala, Martin Lubin Dec 1986

The Homeo Domain Of A Murine Protein Binds 5' To Its Own Homeo Box., Abraham Fainsod, Leonard D. Bogarad, Tarmo Ruusala, Martin Lubin

Dartmouth Scholarship

Nuclear protein extracts from day 12.5 mouse embryos were used to study protein binding to DNA sequences 5' of the Hox 1.5 homeo box. Embryos of this developmental stage are known to express this gene. DNA binding protein blotting and retardation gel techniques show that murine embryonic nuclear proteins specifically bind a 753-base pair (bp) DNA fragment from the region upstream of the Hox 1.5 homeo box. A fusion protein containing the Hox 1.5 homeo domain constructed in lambda gt11 also binds the same 753-bp DNA fragment. Specific binding of the fusion protein to the upstream DNA fragment shows that …

The Mechanism By Which Oxygen And Cytochrome C Increase The Rate Of Electron Transfer From Cytochrome A To Cytochrome A3 Of Cytochrome C Oxidase, D. Bickar, J. F. Turrens, A. L. Lehninger Dec 1986

The Mechanism By Which Oxygen And Cytochrome C Increase The Rate Of Electron Transfer From Cytochrome A To Cytochrome A3 Of Cytochrome C Oxidase, D. Bickar, J. F. Turrens, A. L. Lehninger

Chemistry: Faculty Publications

When cytochrome c oxidase is isolated from mitochondria, the purified enzyme requires both cytochrome c and O2 to achieve its maximum rate of internal electron transfer from cytochrome a to cytochrome a3. When reductants other than cytochrome c are used, the rate of internal electron transfer is very slow. In this paper we offer an explanation for the slow reduction of cytochrome a3 when reductants other than cytochrome c are used and for the apparent allosteric effects of cytochrome c and O2. Our model is based on the conventional understanding of cytochrome oxidase mechanism (i.e. electron transfer from cytochrome a/Cu(A) …

Assignment Of The Lattice Modes In Tcnq0 Single Crystals, K.M. White, K.-H. Brose, Craig J. Eckhardt

Craig J. Eckhardt Publications

A complete assignment of the six librational modes of the TCNQ0 crystal has been made employing both polarized Raman spectroscopic measurements and lattice dynamical calculations. Agreement between theory and experiment is good and modes at 40.5, 74.5, and 96 cm-1 are assigned as Ag active and those at 63, 75.5, and 104 cm-1 are Bg active. The lattice modes are found to be clearly separated from the molecular modes. The study emphasizes the importance of crystal optics and quality in the measurement of the polarized Raman spectra of biaxial crystals. The Journal of Chemical Physics …

Charge Transfer-Oxy Radical Mechanism For Anti-Cancer Agents, Peter Kovacic, James R. Ames, Paavo Lumme, Hannu Elo, O. Cox, Michael D. Ryan Nov 1986

Charge Transfer-Oxy Radical Mechanism For Anti-Cancer Agents, Peter Kovacic, James R. Ames, Paavo Lumme, Hannu Elo, O. Cox, Michael D. Ryan

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The proposal is advanced that anti-cancer drugs generally function by charge transfer resulting in formation of toxic oxy radicals which destroy the neoplasm. Electrochemical studies were performed with some of the main types of agents: iminium ions (adenine iminium from alkylating species, iminium metabolite of 6-mercaptopurine, nitidine, other polynuclear iminiums) and metal complexes (Pt(II)diaquodiammine-guanosine, copper salicylaldoximes). Reduction potentials ranged from -0.4 to -1.2 V. Literature data for quinones are presented and radiation is discussed. Based on the theoretical framework, a rationale is offered for the carcinogen-anti-cancer paradox and the role of antioxidants.

Theoretical Calculation Of The Transport Properties Of Monatomic Lithium Vapor, Paul M. Holland, Louis Biolsi Jr., James C. Rainwater Oct 1986

Theoretical Calculation Of The Transport Properties Of Monatomic Lithium Vapor, Paul M. Holland, Louis Biolsi Jr., James C. Rainwater

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Transport properties of dilute monatomic gases depend on two body atom-atom interaction potentials. When two ground state (2S) lithium atoms interact, they can follow either of two potential energy curves corresponding to the Li2 molecule in the X1Σ+g or 3Σ+u state. Transport collision integrals for these states have been calculated by accurately representing quantum mechanical potential energy curves with the Hulburt-Hirschfelder potential. The excellent agreement of calculated viscosities with experimental results provides further evidence that this potential can be used to estimate accurately transport properties under conditions where experimental data …

The Synthesis And Evaluation Of The Cardiovascular Activity Of Novel Imidazole Ring Systems, Joseph E. De Los Angeles Oct 1986

The Synthesis And Evaluation Of The Cardiovascular Activity Of Novel Imidazole Ring Systems, Joseph E. De Los Angeles

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

An investigation was undertaken to synthesize and evaluate the cardiovascular activity of two imidazole ring systems. Imidazoles with hypotensive activity would provide novel potential antihypertensive drugs. These novel structures may also find use as chemical probes in the study of the cardiovascular system and as prototypes for other potential cardiovascular agents.

The histamine derivative, 7,7-dipyridyl-4,5,6,7-tetrahydroimidazo-[4,5-c]pyridine (ligand l), was demonstrated to possess significant hypotensive activity in laboratory rats. A 15 mg/Kg dose of ligand 1 produces a statistically significant decrease in blood pressure when injected IP. This hypotensive effect is also associated with marked increase in heart rate. Although compound 1 …

Scaling All Correlation Energy In Perturbation Theory Calculations Of Bond Energies And Barrier Heights, Mark S. Gordon, Donald G. Truhlar Sep 1986

Scaling All Correlation Energy In Perturbation Theory Calculations Of Bond Energies And Barrier Heights, Mark S. Gordon, Donald G. Truhlar

Mark S. Gordon

We present and test a new method for scaling all correlation energy as estimated by M0ller-Plesset many-body perturbation theory with popular basis sets. Scale factors that may be useful for future applications are estimated from known bond dissociation energies. We also use scale factors to estimate the barrier heights for two hydrogen-transfer reactions, CH3 + H2 = CH4 + H and OH + CH4 = H20 + CH3•

Clues To The Shapes Of Very Hot Nuclei: Calculated Patterns For Evaporative Emission From Deformed Nuclei, N. N. Ajitanand, G. La Rana, R. Lacey, David J. Moses, Louis C. Vaz, Graham F. Peaslee, D. M. De Castro Rizzo, Morton Kaplan, John M. Alexander

Faculty Publications

Evaporation-like emission of light particles (n, H, He, . . .) has been observed for many nuclear reactions that populate composite nuclei with temperatures of up to ≊5 MeV and spins as high as ≊150ħ. The measured average energies for the light charged particles are often significantly lower than calculations for evaporation from spherical nuclei. Detailed calculations have not been reported for the role of deformation in evaporative emission patterns, and thus the interpretation of such data has been severely limited. In this paper we describe a method for making evaporation calculations for deformed nuclei, and we present results for …
