A Machine Learning Approach To Predict Retention Of Computer Science Students At University Of Nevada, Las Vegas, Sudhir Deshmukh
A Machine Learning Approach To Predict Retention Of Computer Science Students At University Of Nevada, Las Vegas, Sudhir Deshmukh
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Student retention is an important measure when in determining student success. Retention refers to the first-time full-time student from previous fall term who returned to the same university for the following fall term. Decline in retention rate have adverse effect on stakeholders, parents, and students view about the institution, revenue generated from tuition cost and obtaining outside funds. In an effort to increase retention rates, universities have started analyzing the factors that correlate with students dropping out. Many universities have identified some of these factors and are working on developing intervention programs to help students to elevate their academic performance …

Hdr Brachytherapy For Skin Cancer Using H.A.M. Applicator, Timothy Richard Thatcher
Hdr Brachytherapy For Skin Cancer Using H.A.M. Applicator, Timothy Richard Thatcher
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Skin cancer is the most common type of malignancy affecting both men and women in the United States. A majority of these cases are nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSC) such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The goal of any skin cancer treatment is to cure the lesion itself while also preserving function and optimizing superficial cosmesis. High dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy provides an alternative to superficial x-ray or electron beam for skin cancer treatment. Utilizing an Iridium 192 source soldered to the end of a wire, surface dose can be administered at predetermined positions with sharper …
An Evaluation Of Bank Storage At Lake Mead Reservoir In The Southwest United States, Jon Woodrow Wilson
An Evaluation Of Bank Storage At Lake Mead Reservoir In The Southwest United States, Jon Woodrow Wilson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
A water balance model is employed at Lake Mead to monitor and verify changing hydrology that affects total volume at the reservoir. Bank storage, which is defined as the volume of water captured in permeable lithologic layers subject to changes induced by contact and proximity to an open waterbody, is one component that is updated regularly and is based upon data and methods that were developed in the 1960’s from observations made within the first 30 years of the reservoir's maturation. Since this period, the reservoir has undergone further development and a current understanding of additional hydrologic affects to bank …
Characterization Of Beryllium Ion Complexation In The Presence Of Biological Buffers Using Isothermal Titration Calorimetry, Guillermo Alexander Ramirez
Characterization Of Beryllium Ion Complexation In The Presence Of Biological Buffers Using Isothermal Titration Calorimetry, Guillermo Alexander Ramirez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Be2+ ion is a biologically active metal that is capable of binding to proteins and has been shown to affect various cellular processes. When treated with Be2+, certain cancer cells display cytostatic effects. GSK3β is a regulatory kinase involved in the β-catenin pathway that may be involved in producing these cytostatic effects when Be2+ binds to it. In order to determine binding parameters between Be2+ and GSK3β, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) can be utilized. However, titrations at physiological pH cannot be carried out due to Be2+ unique speciation at neutral pH ranges. Significant precipitation occurs at pH 6 and higher …
Investigations Of Technetium Metal And The Synthesis Of Binary Technetium Nitrides Under Extreme Conditions, Emily Siska
Investigations Of Technetium Metal And The Synthesis Of Binary Technetium Nitrides Under Extreme Conditions, Emily Siska
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Technetium (Tc) is the lightest of the radioactive elements and has no stable isotopes. Significant quantities of Tc are not naturally occurring on earth. However, technetium is found in high fission yield in nuclear reactors and produced for medical imaging. With its long half life, and high mobility in the environment make it of particular interest. To that end, the fundamental chemistry of Tc and Tc compounds is not as well understood compared to neighboring elements on the periodic table. Therefore, fundamental studies designed to better understand this transition metal, coupled with more targeted investigation at high temperature and pressure …

Detection Of Snps Associated With Bone Loss Rate By Using Machine Learning Approaches, Avinash Yaganapu
Detection Of Snps Associated With Bone Loss Rate By Using Machine Learning Approaches, Avinash Yaganapu
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Osteoporosis is one of the most common diseases seen in postmenopausal women, it decreases the bone density and quality, and later causes bone loss. Generally, bone loss occurs when bone losses its content and become porous: a sponge like substance. In most Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS), researchers perform experiments with genomic data that contains some millions of numbers of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and checks their association with the trait or disease. In this thesis, we performed two separate analyses with 2207 (of bone loss and bone gain) and 645 (of bone loss) instances separately. For predicting the SNPs …

Motivational Predictors Of Academic Risk-Taking, Danette Dee Barber
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Students benefit when they are willing to engage in optimal challenges (Clifford, 1991). Engagement in challenges, however, comes with academic risks, as failure may be a result. This study investigated motivational factors, including expectancy, subjective task value, mastery goal orientation, and performance avoidance goal orientation as predictors of achievement-related outcomes, including course grade and academic risk-taking. Data were collected from 317 university students enrolled in education classes. Students were given a reading passage and asked to choose questions to answer based on the passage. Students who chose harder questions were categorized as taking more risk. Students also answered questions about …
The Relationship Between Tree Canopy And Social Capital On Physical Activity In Unlv Students, Melissa Bartshe
The Relationship Between Tree Canopy And Social Capital On Physical Activity In Unlv Students, Melissa Bartshe
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Despite the numerous health benefits, rates of physical activity are low, especially among the college student population. Neighborhood tree canopy is one aspect of the built environment that has been shown to positively impact physical activity. Social capital has also been correlated with higher rates of physical activity. The sprawling urban design and arid desert climate of Las Vegas pose unique challenges to both tree canopy and social capital. Additionally, the relationship between tree canopy, social capital, and physical activity is understudied in the college student population. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship of tree canopy …
A Framework For Vector-Weighted Deep Neural Networks, Carter Chiu
A Framework For Vector-Weighted Deep Neural Networks, Carter Chiu
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The vast majority of advances in deep neural network research operate on the basis of a real-valued weight space. Recent work in alternative spaces have challenged and complemented this idea; for instance, the use of complex- or binary-valued weights have yielded promising and fascinating results. We propose a framework for a novel weight space consisting of vector values which we christen VectorNet. We first develop the theoretical foundations of our proposed approach, including formalizing the requisite theory for forward and backpropagating values in a vector-weighted layer. We also introduce the concept of expansion and aggregation functions for conversion between real …
Machine Learning For Prediction Of Trabecular And Cortical Bone Mineral Density, Partha Chudal
Machine Learning For Prediction Of Trabecular And Cortical Bone Mineral Density, Partha Chudal
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Osteoporosis becomes very common problem for people after a certain age, which results in fragility fractures without any previous symptoms. One of the primary predictors of osteoporosis is bone mineral density (BMD). BMD is the mineral content of bone, at the optimal levels, that makes the bone strong enough to bear the regular load and elastic enough to handle the irregular twisting load. Two of the major parts of the bone that help to acquire such property are trabecular and cortical bone. This thesis focuses on predicting the BMDs of trabecular and cortical bone for men. For this purpose we …

Chemical And Electronic Surface Structure Of Chalcopyrite-Based Thin Films For Solar Water Splitting, James C. Carter
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In recent years, various thin film solar devices have reached markedly high efficiencies on both the laboratory and large area scale. To further evaluate their potential, and help drive device optimization of efficient solar devices, a detailed understanding of the chemical and electronic structure of the surfaces and interfaces is required. It is these interfaces that play a pivotal role in dictating aspects of device performance. Chalcopyrite-based materials, such as Cu(In,Ga)S2 (CIGS) are regarded as one of the most promising absorber materials for use in highly efficient solar devices. In the context of photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen generation, the tunability of …
Can Desert Mosses Hide From Climate Change? The Ecophysiological Importance Of Habitat Buffering & Water Relations To A Keystone Biocrust Moss In The Mojave Desert, Theresa Ann Clark
Can Desert Mosses Hide From Climate Change? The Ecophysiological Importance Of Habitat Buffering & Water Relations To A Keystone Biocrust Moss In The Mojave Desert, Theresa Ann Clark
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Empirical and observational studies suggest a keystone biocrust moss, Syntrichia caninervis, may be sensitive to future climate change in the American Southwest due to its uniquely sensitive water relations that appear particularly challenged during summer hydration-desiccation cycles. However, the potential mitigating roles of habitat buffering, acclimatization, and winter recovery on the vulnerability of this species remain largely unexplored. I investigated potential abiotic and biotic resiliency factors driving summer stress resistance and recovery in S. caninervis along present-day aridity gradients in the Mojave Desert to strengthen the climate change vulnerability assessment for this species common to biocrusts of North America, northern …
Machine Learning Approach For Predicting Cancer Using Gene Expression, Aashi Maharjan
Machine Learning Approach For Predicting Cancer Using Gene Expression, Aashi Maharjan
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Cancer has become one of the major factors responsible for global deaths, due to late diagnoses and lack of proper treatment. It involves the abnormal and uncontrolled growth of cells inside the body, which might spread from one place to different parts. Ribonucleic acid (RNA) sequencing can detect the changes occurring inside cells and helps to analyze the transcriptome of gene expression patterns inside RNA. Machine learning techniques can assist in the prediction of cancer at an early stage, if data is available. The objective of this thesis is to build models and classify different types of cancer. For this …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Synthetic Urban Melt Glass, Rebecca Kristien Lowe
Synthesis And Characterization Of Synthetic Urban Melt Glass, Rebecca Kristien Lowe
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Melt glass formed from the explosion of a nuclear device is a unique post-detonation material that can aid in the ensuing forensics investigation. Trapped in the melt glass are chemical and isotopic signatures that can provide diagnostic and source information about the weapon by comparison with documentation of previous detonations. A nuclear terrorist attack would likely take place in an urban environment and as such, the melt glass formed would consist of a complex matrix including urban materials like cement and glass, activation products from the large neutron flux that will be seen, and fission products from the detonation. The …

By completing an ideological analysis of the GND, in addition to examining some news media portrayals of the GND, this thesis analyzes the underlying motivations and ideologies surrounding female politicians, climate change, and climate policies. This thesis examines reads the GND not as a policy that was meant to be passed, but instead as an ideological statement about humans and their relationship to the environment. The news media portrayals exhibit varying coverage of the GND’s effectiveness, varying use …
Towards Multi-Modal Data Classification, Henry Ng
Towards Multi-Modal Data Classification, Henry Ng
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
A feature fusion multi-modal neural network (MMN) is a network that combines different modalities at the feature level to perform a specific task. In this paper, we study the problem of training the fusion procedure for MMN. A recent study has found that training a multi-modal network that incorporates late fusion produces a network that has not learned the proper parameters for feature extraction. These late fusion models perform very well during training but fall short to its single modality counterpart when testing. We hypothesize that jointly trained MMN have weight space that is too large for effective training. To …
