Synthesis And Reactivity Of Carborane Backbone Pincer Complexes, Bennett J. Eleazer Jan 2018

Synthesis And Reactivity Of Carborane Backbone Pincer Complexes, Bennett J. Eleazer

Theses and Dissertations

In organometallic chemistry, boron-centered ligand systems represent a powerful synthetic strategy for the promotion of a variety of catalytic transformations. These ligands offer a versatile array of bonding motifs, which can function as borane, boratrane, boryl, borate, or borylenes type ligands, and are likely the strongest σ-donors in the anionic series of ligands based on boron, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. Carboranes, which are icosahedral boron clusters of the type C2B10H12, offer unique potential as metal ligands, such as their bonding to exohedral metal centers being dominated by two-center-two-electron σ-bond interactions, their three-dimensional cluster structure providing considerable steric shielding to a …

Depairing Current Density In Nbtin Superconducting Films, Nahid Shayesteh Swails Jan 2018

Depairing Current Density In Nbtin Superconducting Films, Nahid Shayesteh Swails

Theses and Dissertations

In this work, we systematically investigate the superconducting properties of Niobium Titanium Nitride (NbTiN) superconducting films with different geometries, which at low temperature remain superconducting. NbT iN superconducting films with a few nm thickness are widely used in devices such as superconductor-insulatorsuperconductor (SIS) mixers, superconducting cavities and resonators and superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPD). In all these applications, films of varying dimensions are required to achieve optimal performance. The initial thickness of our samples was 125 nm deposited on a silicon substrate. We change the thickness of our samples using lithography and ion milling. We measure and analyze the thickness …

Semiparametric Regression In The Presence Of Measurement Error, Xiang Li Jan 2018

Semiparametric Regression In The Presence Of Measurement Error, Xiang Li

Theses and Dissertations

The error-in-covariates problem has received great attention among researchers who study semiparametric and nonparametric inference for regression models over the past two decades. Without correcting for the measurement error in covariates, estimators for covariate effect usually contain bias. To account for measurement error, much research have been done in mean regression (Liang et al., 1999; Fuller, 2009; Carroll et al., 2006) and quantile regression (He and Liang, 2000; Hardle et al., 2000; Wei and Carroll, 2009). In contrast, there is little research in mode regression and this motivates us to propose semiparametric methods to address this error-incovariates problem in Chapters …

States And The Numerical Range In The Regular Algebra, James Patrick Sweeney Jan 2018

States And The Numerical Range In The Regular Algebra, James Patrick Sweeney

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation we investigate the algebra numerical range defined by the Banach algebra of regular operators on a Dedekind complete complex Banach lattice, i.e., V (Lr(E), T) = {Φ(T) : Φ ∈ Lr(E)∗, ||Φ|| = 1 = Φ(I)}. For T in the center Z(E) of E we prove that V (Lr(E), T) = co(σ(T)). For T ⊥ I we prove that V (Lr(E), T) is a disk centered at the origin. We then consider the part of V (Lr(E), T) obtained by restricting ourselves to positive states Φ ∈ Lr(E)∗. In this case we show that we get a …

Multiple C-H Bond Activations Of Aromatic Compounds By Unsaturated Dirhenium Carbonyl Complexes, Poonam Dhull Jan 2018

Multiple C-H Bond Activations Of Aromatic Compounds By Unsaturated Dirhenium Carbonyl Complexes, Poonam Dhull

Theses and Dissertations

The background and importance of aromatic C-H bond activation by metal complexes are discussed in Chapter 1 with the help of various examples from the literature. Synthesis of the dirhenium complex Re2(CO)8(-C6H5)(-H) 1.1 is also discussed in detail. It also includes work done on C-H activation on arenes and heteroarenes by previous members of Dr. Adams’ group. The reactions of Re2(CO)8(-C6H5)(-H) with naphthalene and anthracene yielding the first multiply-CH activated arene products by the multiple oxidative-addition processes are presented in Chapter 2. The reaction of Re2(CO)8(-C6H5)(-H) with itself yielded the doubly-Re2-metalated C6H4 bridged compound Re2(CO)8(µ-H)(µ-1,µ-3- C6H4)Re2(CO)8(µ-H), 2.3. The reaction of …

Uncertainty Estimation Of Deep Neural Networks, Chao Chen Jan 2018

Uncertainty Estimation Of Deep Neural Networks, Chao Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Normal neural networks trained with gradient descent and back-propagation have received great success in various applications. On one hand, point estimation of the network weights is prone to over-fitting problems and lacks important uncertainty information associated with the estimation. On the other hand, exact Bayesian neural network methods are intractable and non-applicable for real-world applications. To date, approximate methods have been actively under development for Bayesian neural networks, including but not limited to: stochastic variational methods, Monte Carlo dropouts, and expectation propagation. Though these methods are applicable for current large networks, there are limits to these approaches with either underestimation …

Hierarchical Corannulene-Based Materials, Allison M. Rice Jan 2018

Hierarchical Corannulene-Based Materials, Allison M. Rice

Theses and Dissertations

Merging the intrinsic properties of fullerene (buckyball) and corannulene (buckybowl) derivatives with the inherent properties of crystalline metal- and covalentorganic frameworks (MOFs and COFs), including their modularity, porosity, versatility, high surface area, and structural tunability, opens a pathway to unlock a novel class of fulleretic materials. Despite the great interest in MOFs and COFs, as well as fullerene derivatives, this dissertation is focused on crystalline fullerene- and corannulenecontaining frameworks, highlighting their potential contributions in the fields of optoelectronic devices, electrodes, and photosensitizers. We have revealed a dual role of fullerene- and corannulene-containing building blocks showing their versatility to act as …

A Rotatable Asymmetric Variable Compensation Mirt Model, Xinchu Zhao Jan 2018

A Rotatable Asymmetric Variable Compensation Mirt Model, Xinchu Zhao

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to develop, estimate, and interpret a new variable compensation multidimensional item response theory (MIRT) model, named the Rotatable Asymmetric Variable Compensation Model (RAVCM), that allows for transformation between different correlation structures. Since the model is rotatable like the common compensatory models (CM), it is not necessary to specify or estimate the correlation of abilities to recover the model. Also, it can approximate the existing MIRT models well. In simulation, the RAVCM is shown to estimate the parameters with small error, especially when the non-compensatory model (NCM) is the true model and the correlation of …

Comparing Source Rock Maturity With Pore Size Distribution And Fluid Saturation In The Bakken-Three Forks Petroleum System, Williston Basin, North Dakota, Adedoyin Suleman Adeyilola Jan 2018

Comparing Source Rock Maturity With Pore Size Distribution And Fluid Saturation In The Bakken-Three Forks Petroleum System, Williston Basin, North Dakota, Adedoyin Suleman Adeyilola

Theses and Dissertations

With the continuous demand for fossil fuel and advancement in technology, the unconventional petroleum resources have come into limelight. The Devonian Three Forks Formation consisting of carbonate and clastic sediments is an unconventional oil accumulation

containing about 3.73 billion barrels of technically recoverable oil. However, understanding rock properties of the various lithofacies and fluid saturation is still challenging.

The petroleum prospectivity was evaluated by integrating organic maturity and hydrocarbon generation with porosity distribution and fluid saturation in the Ambrose field and adjacent fields. The organic maturity was done with a programmed pyrolysis analysis (Source

Rock Analyzer) using samples taken at …
