Tropical cyclones (TC) typically decrease in intensity upon interacting with land because of increased surface roughness and decreased surface evaporation. However, several studies have documented cases in which TCs maintain their intensity or even intensify over land within non- or weakly baroclinic environments. Yet, our understanding of the precise physical processes that support maintenance or intensification over land in non- or weakly baroclinic environments remains limited, and the predictive skill for these outcomes has yet to be quantified.

Band ratios using remote imagery can be useful for monitoring large bodies of water when high quality imagery is available. Sentinel-2 satellite imagery provides frequent, high-resolution coverage of the globe. This study set out to test the usefulness of existing band ratios for estimating chlorophyll a (CHL-a), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and turbidity with Sentinel-2 imagery. USGS in-situ data was matched to Sentinel-2 imagery of Beaver Lake, Arkansas taken August 2015 to July 2019 and the dark spectrum fitting (DSF) atmospheric correction method in ACOLITE was applied to generate surface reflectance values. As part of natural resource education in the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFASU), students were instructed to take areal and linear measurements of grounds remotely using available platforms including aerial orthomosaic derived from UAS (unmanned aerial system) acquired imagery, Google Earth Pro, and Pictometry. The onscreen measurement was conducted at five different map scales, 1/1000, 1/2000, 1/3000, 1/4000, and 1/5000. Accuracy of the measurements was assessed by comparing the onscreen measurements to ground truth data verified with a measuring tape. In the first part of this work, we provide contributions to optimal transport through work on the discrete Earth Mover's Distance (EMD).We provide a new formula for the mean EMD by computing three different formulas for the sum of width-one matrices: the first two formulas apply the theory of abstract simplicial complexes and result from a shelling of the order complex, whereas the last formula uses Young tableaux. Subsequently, we employ this result to compute the EMD under different cost matrices satisfying the Monge property. Biological molecules can assume a continuous range of conformations during function. Near equilibrium, the Boltzmann relation connects a particular conformation's free energy to the conformation's occupation probability, thus giving rise to one or more energy landscapes. Biomolecular function proceeds along minimum-energy pathways on such landscapes. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding of biomolecular function often involves the determination of the free-energy landscapes and the identification of functionally relevant minimum-energy conformational paths on these landscapes. This thesis explores deep learning methods for Human Activity Recognition (HAR) from videos to automate the annotation of human activities in videos. The research is particularly relevant for continuous monitoring in healthcare settings such as nursing homes and hospitals. The innovative part of the approach lies in using YOLO models to first detect humans in video frames and then isolating them from the rest of the image for activity recognition which leads to an improvement in accuracy. The study employs pre-trained deep residual networks, such as ResNet50, ResNet152-V2, and Inception-ResNetV2, which were found to work better than custom CNN-based models. …

This work investigates digital twin (DT) applications for electric power system (EPS) resilience. A novel DT architecture is proposed consisting of a physical twin, a virtual twin, an intelligent agent, and data communications. Requirements for the virtual twin are identified. Guidelines are provided for generating, capturing, and storing data to train the intelligent agent. The relationship between the DT development process and an existing controller hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) process is discussed. The late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA; 362 to 255 Ma) was an icehouse interval that drove substantial changes in Earth’s surficial systems. Numerous paradigms regarding aspects of the LPIA were established throughout ~150 years of research based primarily on the evolving state of knowledge in sedimentology. The near-field lithological evidence for widespread glaciation across sedimentary basins of Gondwana are the building blocks for comprehensive paleoclimatic, biologic, paleogeographic, and ice volume models. Over the years there have been various extensions introduced, each with the goal of making attribute grammar more useful for applications such as program analysis. The first extension described here is circular attribute grammar by Farrow. It is followed by remote attribute grammar, which was introduced separately by Boyland and Hedin. More recently, Hedin introduced circular remote attribute grammars and a proof of concept implementation with demand evaluation. Such primitives are desirable for applications such as communication and intellectual property protection. This work concerns the spectra of doubly stochastic matrices whose entries are rational numbers with a bounded denominator. When the bound is fixed, we consider the enumeration of these matrices and also the enumeration of the orbits under the action of the symmetric group.

In the case where the bound is two, we investigate the symmetric case. This study examined the nutrient environment of sediments in the Milwaukee River estuary and the dynamics of those nutrients during simulated disturbance experiments within the context of large-scale dredging remediation. Surface sediments were collected from throughout the Milwaukee estuary (including river, harbor, and nearshore stations) by PONAR, centrifuged to separate porewater (interstitial water) from solid material, and filtered to further isolate and stabilize dissolved material. Porewaters were analyzed for dissolved nutrients including ammoniacal nitrogen (AN), nitrate, nitrite, and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP). Dreissenid mussels (Dreissena polymorpha and Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) have changed the fundamental community structure and biogeochemical processes of the Lake Michigan nearshore zone. There is evidence that dreissenids promote the nuisance growth of benthic algae, especially Cladophora sp. In addition, benthic macroinvertebrates have benefitted from the presence of dreissenid mussels due to the increased structural complexity along with greater nutrient availability in the benthos. Under consideration are convergence results between optimality criteria for two infinite-horizon stochastic control problems: the long-term average problem and the $\alpha$-discounted problem, where $\alpha \in (0,1]$ is a given discount rate. The objects under control are those stochastic processes that arise as (relaxed) solutions to a controlled martingale problem; and such controlled processes, subject to a given budget constraint, comprise the feasible sets for the two stochastic control problems.

We extend the notion of collapsibility to non-compact complexes and prove collapsibility of locally-finite CAT(0) cube complexes. Namely, we construct such a cube complex $X$ out of nested convex compact subcomplexes $\{C_i\}_{i=0}^\infty$ with the properties that $X=\cup_{i=0}^\infty C_i$ and $C_i$ collapses to $C_{i-1}$ for all $i\ge 1$.

We then define bonding maps $r_i$ between the compacta $C_i$ and construct an inverse sequence yielding the inverse limit space $\varprojlim\{C_i,r_i\}$. This will provide a new way of Z-compactifying $X$. In particular, the process will yield a new Z-boundary, called the cubical boundary.

We find a class of simplicial complexes as nerves of non-hyperbolic right-angled Coxetergroups, with boundary homeomorphic to the Menger curve. The nerves are triangulations of compact orientable surfaces with boundary. In particular, the nerves are non-graphs.

Most of our knowledge about the causes of 20th-century climate change comes from simulation using numerical models. However, the observed climate variability and the one simulated by the state-of-the-art climate models exhibit substantial discrepancies at the decadal-to-multidecadal time scale and thus it hinders our fundamental understanding of the observed climate change. Evidence is mounting that vigorous intrinsic variability associated with mesoscale oceanic features contributes significantly to large-scale low-frequency climate variability, with fundamental implications for decadal climate low-frequency climate prediction. The agents will not accelerate or decelerate as humans do. Humans have an irregular pattern of acceleration and deceleration when it comes to real-time driving. This work explores the possible existence, properties, and potential applications of different polytypes of graphene monoxide (GmO) - two-dimensional crystalline monolayers composed of equal numbers of O and C atoms. In addition to previously experimentally discovered and theoretically modeled α phase, prediction and discovery of the second phase - β-GmO - is reported along with evaluation of six other possible phases. Structural parameters, electronic and mechanical properties of all the phases, including α-GmO, are determined using density functional calculations and compared. This work is comprised of research in two areas: superconductors and gravitational waves.

Superconductors have led to novel fundamental discoveries, including new topological states. These states are robust, in that they are not altered by common changes to their environment. Here, I will introduce three studies focused on topological properties of various superconductors. First, newly proposed even-parity superconducting state in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ introduces the emergence of topologically protected Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces. Next, I will discuss topological bands and odd-parity superconductivity in UTe$_2$, which suggest Weyl nodes and their potential topological properties. The presented research describes the development of three-dimensional acid-base models and an accompanying learning module to support students’ understanding of the autoionization of water, acidic strength, pH, and Ka in aqueous acid-base chemistry. What does a typical quotient of a group look like? Gromov looked at the density model of quotients of free groups. The density parameter $d$ measures the rate of exponential growth of the number of relators compared to the size of the Cayley ball. Using this model, he proved that for $d<1/2$, the typical quotient of a free group is non-elementary hyperbolic. Ollivier extended Gromov's result to show that for $d<1/2$, the typical quotient of many hyperbolic groups is also non-elementary hyperbolic.

Żuk and Kotowski--Kotowski proved that for $d>1/3$, a typical quotient of a free group has Property (T). We show that (in a closely related density model) for $1/3

This study evaluated two popular software packages currently used within the natural resources profession to create orthophoto mosaics: Drone2Map and Pix4Dmapper. Of particular concern was how effective these two software packages would perform in creating orthophoto mosaics over a city park in East Texas consisting of forest, open grass, and urban concrete surrounding a lake.
