Uranium-Series And Strontium Isotope Ratios In Soils From Basse-Terre Island, French Guadeloupe: Insights For Rapid Soil Formation And Impact Of Dust In A Tropical Volcanic Setting, Yvette Pereyra

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Chemical weathering of silicate rocks generates soils that contain mineral nutrients, sustain ecosystems, modify water chemistry in the hydrosphere, and regulate the global carbon cycle. Understanding the timescales of soil formation and sources of soil mineral nutrients has great implications for securing the future of agriculture and food production. However, few tools are currently available to directly quantify the rates of chemical weathering and timescales of soil formation. Uranium-series isotopes fractionate during chemical weathering and the activity ratios of (234U/238U), (230Th/238U), (238U/232Th) and (230Th/232Th) have great potential to constrain the rates and timescales of chemical weathering and soil formation in …

Combining Interval And Probabilistic Uncertainty In Engineering Applications, Andrew Martin Pownuk Jan 2016

Combining Interval And Probabilistic Uncertainty In Engineering Applications, Andrew Martin Pownuk

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In many practical application, we process measurement results and expert estimates. Measurements and expert estimates are never absolutely accurate, their result are slightly different from the actual (unknown) values of the corresponding quantities. It is therefore desirable to analyze how this measurement and estimation inaccuracy affects the results of data processing. There exist numerous methods for estimating the accuracy of the results of data processing under different models of measurement and estimation inaccuracies: probabilistic, interval, and fuzzy. To be useful in engineering applications, these methods should provide accurate estimate for the resulting uncertainty, should not take too much computation time, …

National Evaluation For Development And Exploration Potential Of Mineral Commodities In Produced Waters, Stephanie Ray Jan 2016

National Evaluation For Development And Exploration Potential Of Mineral Commodities In Produced Waters, Stephanie Ray

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The U.S. Geological Survey recently updated a geochemical database consisting of data for approximately 160,000 produced waters samples, primarily from petroleum and geothermal reservoirs. Using major and trace elements from conventional and unconventional well types from the database, this Thesis provides a comprehensive, national evaluation for mineral commodity potential in produced waters. Produced waters contain virtually every naturally occurring element and can range in salinity to several times that of seawater. Despite the typical outlook to view produced waters as a waste, they have potential for natural resource development.

This Thesis provides, for each mineral commodity found in the produced …

Modeling Of Piezoelectric Traveling Wave Rotary Ultrasonic Motors With The Finite Volume Method, Ivan Arturo Renteria Marquez Jan 2016

Modeling Of Piezoelectric Traveling Wave Rotary Ultrasonic Motors With The Finite Volume Method, Ivan Arturo Renteria Marquez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In 1983 Toshiiku Sashida developed a new motor concept called Piezoelectric Traveling Wave Rotary Ultrasonic Motor (PTRUSM). The advantages of these motors include high torque at low speed, absence of a generated magnetic field, and high potential for miniaturization. Unfortunately PTRUSMs have some disadvantages that limit the areas of applications for these types of motors. The disadvantages are a short operating life (about 1000 hours), small output power, and the need of a complex motor controller.

On one hand, these motors have been used in satellites, mobile phones, photocopiers, robotic arms, telescopes, automobiles, and camera autofocusing. On the other hand, …

Improving The Engineering Properties Of Pla For 3d Printing And Beyond, Carmen R. Rocha

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Additive manufacturing (AM), now more commonly known as 3D printing, has been classified as efficient, fast, and practical in the prototyping sector of product development. In the work presented here, we will use one of the AM techniques known as Material extrusion 3D printing (ME3DP), which has all the advantages of AM. However, one of the biggest challenges facing ME3DP technologies is the limitation of the range of materials used by this technique. Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and poly-lactic acid (PLA) are currently the most common thermoplastics materials used in ME3DP because of their ability to melt and be reprocessed. …

Development Of Efficient Simultaneous Confidence Bounds For Linear Mixed Models With Applications In Alcohol Research, Emmanuel Joseph Sequeira Jan 2016

Development Of Efficient Simultaneous Confidence Bounds For Linear Mixed Models With Applications In Alcohol Research, Emmanuel Joseph Sequeira

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Multiplicity corrections are necessary to ensure the accuracy of conclusions made in studies that carry out multiple inferences simultaneously. This Thesis uses the methodology derived by Hunter and Worsley to obtain improved simultaneous confidence bounds (SCBs) that are less conservative than the highly used Bonferroni SCBs, for studies using linear mixed modeling. Empirical coverage rates were obtained for data that was generated using simulations, to compare the accuracy of the Hunter-Worsley SCBs with that of the Bonferroni SCBs. The bounds were also applied to data in the field of alcohol research, where comparisons were made to determine the moderating effect …

Pre-Tuned Principal Component Regression And Several Variants, Pei Wang Jan 2016

Pre-Tuned Principal Component Regression And Several Variants, Pei Wang

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The regression coecient estimates from ordinary least squares (OLS) have a low probability of being close to the real value when there is a multicollinearity problem in the design matrix. In order to combat this problem, many regularized methods have been introduced. Principal components regression (PCR) is an important analysis tool for dealing with multicollinearity and high-dimensionality. In conventional PCR, the rst step is to change the original predictors to orthogonal principal components (PC's) by a linear transformation. These PC's correspond to the eigenvalues which are sorted in a decreasing order. The next step is to regress the response on …

Thus, the exploration and incorporation of remote methods for monitoring changes in water quality. …

Using Word Embeddings For Text Classification In Positive And Unlabeled Learning, Emmanuel Carlo Tafoya Jan 2016

Using Word Embeddings For Text Classification In Positive And Unlabeled Learning, Emmanuel Carlo Tafoya

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Machine Learning is a sub-field of Artificial intelligence that aims to automatically improve algorithms by experience. It has been used successfully to solve various problems, such as playing checkers, or even as simple as word prediction when typing a sentence. These algorithms perform best with large amounts of training data. The more labeled data, the better a machine learning algorithm will be able to recognize patterns. However, the ideal scenario, where there is a large amount of labeled data available to train the algorithm, does not occur all the time. There are cases where labeling data is both time-consuming and …

A New Test For The Mean Vector In High Dimensional Setting, Behzad Aalipur Hafshejani

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Traditional statistical data analysis mostly includes methods and techniques to deal with problems in which there are many observations but a few variables. Nonetheless, the current inclination is toward more observations but also, toward more variables. Today's observations gathered on individuals are images, curves, or even movies. Unfortunately many traditional methods do not work well in high dimensional settings. As an example Hotelling's test which is well known and widely used in the literature does not work when it comes to high dimensional problems. Consequently statisticians are making an effort to find remedies or new approaches to multivariate mean testing. …
