Models For Predicting Maximum Potential Intensity Of Tropical Cyclones, Iftekhar Chowdhury, Gemechis Djira Feb 2023

Models For Predicting Maximum Potential Intensity Of Tropical Cyclones, Iftekhar Chowdhury, Gemechis Djira

SDSU Data Science Symposium

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are considered as extreme weather events, which has a low-pressure center, namely an eye, strong winds, and a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produces heavy rain, storm surges, and can cause severe destruction in coastal areas worldwide. Therefore, reliable forecasts of the maximum potential intensity (MPI) of TCs are critical to estimate the damages to properties, lives, and risk assessment. In this study, we explore and propose various regression models, to predict the potential intensity of TCs in the North Atlantic at 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72- hour forecasting lead time. In addition, a popular …

Temporal Tensor Factorization For Multidimensional Forecasting, Jackson Cates, Karissa Scipke, Randy Hoover, Kyle Caudle Feb 2023

Temporal Tensor Factorization For Multidimensional Forecasting, Jackson Cates, Karissa Scipke, Randy Hoover, Kyle Caudle

SDSU Data Science Symposium

In the era of big data, there is a need for forecasting high-dimensional time series that might be incomplete, sparse, and/or nonstationary. The current research aims to solve this problem for two-dimensional data through a combination of temporal matrix factorization (TMF) and low-rank tensor factorization. From this method, we propose an expansion of TMF to two-dimensional data: temporal tensor factorization (TTF). The current research aims to interpolate missing values via low-rank tensor factorization, which produces a latent space of the original multilinear time series. We then can perform forecasting in the latent space. We present experimental results of the proposed …

Session 8: Ensemble Of Score Likelihood Ratios For The Common Source Problem, Federico Veneri, Danica M. Ommen Feb 2023

Session 8: Ensemble Of Score Likelihood Ratios For The Common Source Problem, Federico Veneri, Danica M. Ommen

SDSU Data Science Symposium

Machine learning-based Score Likelihood Ratios have been proposed as an alternative to traditional Likelihood Ratios and Bayes Factor to quantify the value of evidence when contrasting two opposing propositions.

Under the common source problem, the opposing proposition relates to the inferential problem of assessing whether two items come from the same source. Machine learning techniques can be used to construct a (dis)similarity score for complex data when developing a traditional model is infeasible, and density estimation is used to estimate the likelihood of the scores under both propositions.

In practice, the metric and its distribution are developed using pairwise comparisons …

Session 2: The Effect Of Boom Leveling On Spray Dispersion, Travis A. Burgers, Miguel Bustamante, Juan F. Vivanco

SDSU Data Science Symposium

Self-propelled sprayers are commonly used in agriculture to disperse agrichemicals. These sprayers commonly have two boom wings with dozens of nozzles that disperse the chemicals. Automatic boom height systems reduce the variability of agricultural sprayer boom height, which is important to reduce uneven spray dispersion if the boom is not at the target height.

A computational model was created to simulate the spray dispersion under the following conditions: a) one stationary nozzle based on the measured spray pattern from one nozzle, b) one stationary model due to an angled boom, c) superposition of multiple stationary nozzles due an angled boom, …

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

We are in a modern biodiversity crisis that will restructure community compositions and ecological functions globally. Large mammals, important contributors to ecosystem function, have been affected directly by purposeful extermination and indirectly by climate and land-use changes, yet functional turnover is rarely assessed on a global scale using metrics based on functional traits. Using ecometrics, the study of functional trait distributions and functional turnover, we examine the relationship between vegetation cover and locomotor traits for artiodactyl and carnivoran communities. We show that the ability to detect a functional relationship is strengthened when locomotor traits of both primary consumers (artiodactyls, n …

Assessing The Economic Feasibility Of Capturing And Utilizing Carbon Dioxide From Ethanol Production In South Dakota, Makiah Stukel Jan 2023

Assessing The Economic Feasibility Of Capturing And Utilizing Carbon Dioxide From Ethanol Production In South Dakota, Makiah Stukel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the Industrial Revolution, anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have spiked dramatically, prompting discussions on climate change. Mitigating climate change requires significant reductions in global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions as CO2 is the most abundant anthropogenic GHG. A process that assists in offsetting the exponential growth in CO2 emissions is carbon capture and storage (CCS). Integrating carbon capture technology into the ethanol industry can provide an economically feasible way to achieve net reductions in CO2 emissions. The proposed work investigates the economic viability of applying CCS technologies to the 16 ethanol facilities in South Dakota (SD) and quantifies the potential …

Evaluating the influence of grass or broadleaf cover crops on soil health measurements is common in the northern US Midwest. However, the comparison among different cover crop mixtures, including blends of both grass and broadleaf species is limited. In 2018–2020, cover crop experiments were conducted in South Dakota at 11 site-years. Cover crops were planted in the summer after small grains harvest as mixtures of dominantly grasses or broadleaves, a 50/50 grass/broadleaf mixture, and a no cover crop control. Soil and above-ground plant residue samples were collected in the fall before winter termination and in the spring before corn planting. …

A Class Of Regression Models For Pairwise Comparisons Of Forensic Handwriting Comparison Systems, Cami M. Fuglsby Jan 2023

A Class Of Regression Models For Pairwise Comparisons Of Forensic Handwriting Comparison Systems, Cami M. Fuglsby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Handwriting analysis is a complex field largely living in forensic science and the legal realm. One task of a forensic document examiner (FDE) may be to determine the writer(s) of handwritten documents. Automated identification systems (AIS) were built to aid FDEs in their examinations. Part of the uses of these AIS (such as FISH[5] [7],WANDA [6], CEDAR-FOX [17], and FLASHID®2) are tomeasure features about a handwriting sample and to provide the user with a numeric value of the evidence. These systems use their own algorithms and definitions of features to quantify the writing and can be considered a black-box. The …

Comprehensive Analysis And Forensic Investigation Of Cyanide, Thiocyanate, And 2-Amino-2-Thiazoline-4-Carboxylic Acid In-Ante- And Postmortem Blood Utilizing Advanced Analytical Techniques, Abdullah Hamad Alluhayb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cyanide (CN), present as cyanide anion (CN-) or hydrogen cyanide (HCN), is a deadly poison. The main mechanism of CN toxicity is blocking terminal electron transfer, leading to cellular hypoxia, cytotoxic anoxia, and potential death. Determining blood CN concen-trations along with its major metabolite, thiocyanate (SCN-), is crucial. A sensitive method for concurrent detection of CN and SCN- from human ante- and post-mortem blood via liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) analysis was devel-oped. The method involved active microdiffusion with chemical modification using naph-thalene-2,3-dicarboxaldehyde (NDA) and taurine, while monobromobimane (MBB) mod-ification was used for SCN-. The method showed good sensitivity for …

Walleye Feeding, Movements, And Energetics Reveal The Importance Of Connected Wetlands In Glacial Lakes, Logan M. Cutler Jan 2023

Walleye Feeding, Movements, And Energetics Reveal The Importance Of Connected Wetlands In Glacial Lakes, Logan M. Cutler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fish require a variety of resources including prey, thermal refugia, and different physical habitat characteristics to grow and reproduce. All necessary resources are rarely provided by a single habitat, resulting in tradeoffs between occupying different habitats; therefore, the ability to move among heterogenous habitats is critical. These tradeoffs may occur in lakes with connected wetlands where the main lake habitats tend to be more thermally stable, but wetlands often provide more diverse and abundant prey. For my second chapter, I compared prey diversity and abundance as well as Walleye (Sander vitreus) diets and condition in a large glacial lake (Lake …

Tracking Nitrogen Mineralization In The Presence Of Biochar Utilizing Complementary-Method Assays In East Central South Dakota, Andrew Calvin Engel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Understanding soil N transformations in agricultural systems of the Northern Great Plains is crucial for guiding effective soil and nutrient management of this vital cropland. While the use of biochar in agriculture has attracted great attention recently, little has been reported on the seasonal dynamics of soil nitrogen (N) transformation and its response to biochar application. A field experiment was conducted over 2 seasons, spring (6/3/19-6/24/19) and summer (7/26/19-8/16/19), using four treatments or control soil, urea (224 kg N/ha), biochar (46,250 kg/ha), and urea+biochar (224 kg N/ha and 46,250 kg/ha, respectively). The results for both seasons showed biochar had no …

Effects Of Agricultural Chemicals On Native Plants Of The Northern Great Plains, Gabrielle Bolwerk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Agricultural chemicals are ubiquitous on the Northern Great Plains landscape and have negative impacts on non-target plant communities, even at small doses. Northern Great Plains grassland plant communities may experience herbicide drift from agricultural fields or be subject to livestock pharmaceuticals in grazing lands. My research objective was to evaluate if and how native plants are affected by agricultural chemical presence at different concentrations. In Chapter 2, I studied the effect of different concentrations of three common agricultural herbicides (2,4-D, atrazine, and trifluralin) on the germination, emergence, and growth of native plant species of the Northern Great Plains. I performed …

Factors Influencing Mortality Of Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis), Emily Moberg Jan 2023

Factors Influencing Mortality Of Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis), Emily Moberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reintroduced bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in Nebraska faced a devastating pneumonia epizootic resulting in variable ewe reproductive success and poor lamb recruitment in many of the herds. From 2015-2017, no lamb recruitment was observed in the northern Pine Ridge subpopulation and as many as 60% of adults died. This was in stark contrast to the healthier Wildcat Hills herds to the south, where lamb recruitment was estimated to be between 50-70% during the same years. From 2018-2020, we radio-collared and recaptured 76 adult female bighorn sheep from 2 of 3 Pine Ridge herds and 1 of 2 Wildcat Hills herds. …

Modulatory Effects Of Deacetylated Sialic Acids (A Sugar Residue) In Nk-Mediated Cytotoxicity And Targeted Therapy By Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors, Mathias Tawiah Anim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The complex nature of the biology of cancer is still an unraveling science, yielding several biomarkers that have served as molecular targets for detection and treatment of the disease. How sugars, glycans, play a role has remained relatively uninvestigated. Sialic acid (Sia), a sugar residue on the surface of cells, has been identified as a hallmark of cancer and its progression. Sialic acid can be highly functionalized, but we became interested in acetylated Sias. This functional group is modulated by Sialate O- acetylesterase (encoded by the gene SIAE) and Sialate O-acetyltransferase (encoded by CASD1), enzymes that play a crucial role …

Relating Predator Community Ecology And Duck Nest Survival In Eastern South Dakota, Samantha R. Fino Jan 2023

Relating Predator Community Ecology And Duck Nest Survival In Eastern South Dakota, Samantha R. Fino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As conversion of native grasslands and wetlands to croplands continues in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR), managers are tasked with maintaining sustainable waterfowl populations. Mesopredator community dynamics is a hypothesized mechanism driving spatiotemporal variation of waterfowl nest survival in the PPR, yet studies often lack detailed information on mesopredator species occurrence and abundance. Therefore, understanding spatial and temporal variation in behaviors of mesopredators provides valuable insights for understanding predator-prey interactions between mesopredators and upland duck nests. Further, differences in a predator community resulting from lethal removal of dominant species may influence composition and space use patterns of subordinate and non-target …

A Study Of The Local Deep Galerkin Method For The Modified Cahn Hilliard Equation, Shi Wen Wong Jan 2023

A Study Of The Local Deep Galerkin Method For The Modified Cahn Hilliard Equation, Shi Wen Wong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Solving higher order partial differential equations (PDEs) can often prove to be a challenging task due to the involvement of higher-order derivatives of the unknown function, particularly for complex problems. The higher the order of the PDE, the more challenging it becomes to obtain an analytical solution. In such cases, alternative numerical methods are often used, such as finite element method or finite difference method. However, these methods can be computationally expensive and require a significant amount of mathematical expertise to implement. In recent times, there has been significant progress in applying neural networks to various fields, including the solution …

Methods For Improving Potassium Fertilizer Recommendations For Corn In South Dakota, Andrew J. Ahlersmeyer Jan 2023

Methods For Improving Potassium Fertilizer Recommendations For Corn In South Dakota, Andrew J. Ahlersmeyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Corn (Zea mays L.) is a vital commodity in South Dakota’s agricultural sector. Optimal corn production occurs when there are sufficient mineral nutrients in the soil, especially potassium (K). Applications of K fertilizer are used when soil test K (STK) levels are deficient. Therefore, producers need reliable, thoroughly tested fertilizer recommendations to make profitable decisions and maintain environmental stewardship. South Dakota K fertilizer recommendations have not been updated in nearly 20 years. Simultaneously, changes in corn genetics, management practices, and climate patterns suggest that the critical soil test value (CSTV) for STK may have shifted in that same time frame. …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cancer is a malicious disease with low survivability rates primarily due to lack of reliable treatment options. Treatments are often non-specific for patients, and cancer resistance to treatment is becoming more prevalent as fast as new therapies are created. Previous studies in our laboratory have focused on the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) and its downstream kinase family members as a key target for cancer. This cascade controls cell proliferation, anti-apoptotic effects, cell regulation, and other survival factors. Additionally, ABC transporters, responsible for efflux of chemotherapeutic material from cells, are key targets to combat drug resistance. We first evaluated a …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Regenerative agriculture is a pressing matter for the dairy industry to address cropland sustainability and carbon sequestration. One regenerative management practice that has been identified to help with row crop sustainability for key metrics like soil organic carbon (SOC) is complex covers. When producers use complex covers one of the main challenges is that it takes time to detect a change in SOC. However, simulation models are a tool that can be used to help determine if a regenerative practice is a strategy that gives the best results (i.e., increased SOC) while aligning with long-term production goals. Therefore, our objectives …
