Emisja Metali Ciężkich Ze Spalania Odpadów Niebezpiecznych, Robert Oleniacz, Marian Mazur, Marek Bogacki

Robert Oleniacz

The paper presents the results of measurements of air emissions of heavy metals from hazardous waste incineration in a multiple hearth furnace and a rotary kiln incinerator equipped with a single wet flue gas cleaning systems. In the multiple hearth furnace an industrial sewage sludge (from coke industry) was being incinerated. In the rotary kiln such wastes were being incinerated as: waste paints, varnish and lubricant, coal tars waste, contaminated cleaning rags, sawdust and used gloves, waste resins and plastics, rubber waste, outdated pharmaceuticals and medicines, and hospital waste. The research allowed us to determine the levels of pollutant concentrations …

Zastosowanie Modelu "Skrzynki" Do Oceny Poziomu Stężeń Zanieczyszczeń Komunikacyjnych W Przyziemnej Warstwie Atmosfery, Marek Bogacki, Marian Mazur, Robert Oleniacz

Robert Oleniacz

Road transport is an essential source of nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO) and reactive hydrocarbons (RHC) emissions to atmosphere. Quantity and chemical constitution of emitted substances and meteorological conditions determine the level of ozon (O3) concentration forming as a result of photochemical reactions. The method presented in the paper consists in designation of quantity and chemical constitution of substances emitted from mo-bile sources and special mathematical modeling of physical and chemical transformations that take place in the lowest atmospheric layer.

Emisja Zanieczyszczeń Podczas Składowania I Termicznej Utylizacji Osadów Ściekowych Z Przemysłu Koksochemicznego / Emissions During Storage And Thermal Utilization Of Sewage Sludge From Coke-Chemical Industry, Robert Oleniacz, Marian Mazur, Marek Bogacki

Robert Oleniacz

Both storage and thermal disposal of sewage sludge from industrial wastewater treatment plants are a significant source of air pollutant emissions. The study included the sludge generated in the coke-chemical industry. The paper presents the results of measurements of emissions of selected substances during storage of the waste in a closed storage hall with natural ventilation and during incineration of the mechanically dewatered sludge in a multiple hearth furnace.

Spalanie Odpadów Poszpitalnych I Farmaceutycznych W Piecu Obrotowym / Incineration Of Hospital And Pharmaceutical Wastes In A Rotary Kiln Incinerator, Robert Oleniacz, Marian Mazur, Marek Bogacki Sep 1997

Spalanie Odpadów Poszpitalnych I Farmaceutycznych W Piecu Obrotowym / Incineration Of Hospital And Pharmaceutical Wastes In A Rotary Kiln Incinerator, Robert Oleniacz, Marian Mazur, Marek Bogacki

Robert Oleniacz

The paper presents selected results of research on hospital and pharmaceutical waste incineration in a full-scale rotary kiln with variable loads of the kiln. As part of these studies measurements of air pollutant concentrations in flue gases and leaching tests of solid combustion products were carried out. Based on these studies, the maximum dose of hospital and pharmaceutical waste was proposed in the mixture with industrial wastes, which does not cause excessive air emissions. The average emission factors for the waste mixture loading were also determined.

Ocena Oddziaływania Na Środowisko Na Przykładzie Zabudowy Pieca Indukcyjnego W "Krakodlew" S.A., Marian Mazur, Marek Bogacki, Robert Oleniacz

Robert Oleniacz

The paper presents the procedure and the results of the environmental impact assessment for the induction furnace installed in the company "Krakodlew" S.A. in Krakow (Poland). This furnace will allow heating and keeping the liquid feed (pig iron) and adjust the chemical composition, which will allow for the production of high-quality heavy castings. The need to perform an environmental impact assessment for objects of this type results from the binding legal regulations in Poland. The analysis included all the main components of the environment: air, soil, vegetation, soil and water environment, land surface and acoustic climate. It was found that …

An Analysis Of Tropical Transport: Influence Of The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, Eugene C. Cordero, S. Randolph Kawa, Mark R. Schoeberl Jul 1997

An Analysis Of Tropical Transport: Influence Of The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, Eugene C. Cordero, S. Randolph Kawa, Mark R. Schoeberl

Eugene C. Cordero

An analysis of over 4 years of Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) measurements of CH4, HF, O3, and zonal wind are used to study the influence of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) on constituent transport in the tropics. At the equator, spectral analysis of the Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) and Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) observations reveals QBO signals in constituent and temperature fields at altitudes between 20 and 45 km. Between these altitudes, the location of the maximum QBO amplitude roughly corresponds with the location of the largest vertical gradient in the constituent field. Thus, at 40 …

Koncepcja Monitoringu Zanieczyszczeń Powietrza Wokół Elektrowni “Jaworzno Iii” Mobilną Stacją Pomiarową, Marian Mazur, Robert Oleniacz, Marek Bogacki, Ryszard Kozakiewicz Jun 1997

Koncepcja Monitoringu Zanieczyszczeń Powietrza Wokół Elektrowni “Jaworzno Iii” Mobilną Stacją Pomiarową, Marian Mazur, Robert Oleniacz, Marek Bogacki, Ryszard Kozakiewicz

Robert Oleniacz

The paper presents the concept of air pollution monitoring around the Power Plant "Jaworzno III" (Poland) with the use of the mobile station. Aim of the new monitoring system is to provide information about the current state of air pollution and to enable an assessment of the environmental implications of the use of low-emission burners, run the installation of flue gas desulphurisation and changes in the way of releasing flue gases into the atmosphere. Due to economic, technical and practical the monitoring system was based on a single mobile station. Measurements will be carried out in a random scheme at …

Effect Size And Power For Clinical Trials Using Years Of Healthy Life As The Primary Endpoint, Paula Diehr Jun 1997

Effect Size And Power For Clinical Trials Using Years Of Healthy Life As The Primary Endpoint, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

Some clinical trials perform repeated measurements on patients over time, plot those measures against time, and summarize the results in terms of the area under the curve. If the measured variable is health status, the summary outcome is sometimes referred to as years of healthy life (YHL), or quality-adjusted life years (QALY). This paper investigates some theoretical and practical aspects of randomized trials designed to assess measures such as YHL. We first derived algebraic expressions for the effect size of YHL measures under several theoretical models of the treatment's effect on health. We used these expressions to examine how the …

Spalarnia Odpadów Lobbe W Dąbrowie Górniczej, Marian Mazur, Robert Oleniacz, Ryszard Januszek

Robert Oleniacz

This paper is a general characteristic of the industrial and hazardous waste incineration plant which was operated in Dąbrowa Górnicza (Poland) in the 90. The waste incineration plant is based on two incinerators - a rotary kiln and a multiple hearth furnace. Levels of selected air pollutant emissions presented in the work allow to assess the potential impact of this facility on air quality.

English title: The LOBBE incineration plant in Dąbrowa Górnicza.

Towards Granular Hydrodynamics In Two-Dimensions, E.L. Grossman, T. Zhou, E. Ben-Naim Apr 1997

Towards Granular Hydrodynamics In Two-Dimensions, E.L. Grossman, T. Zhou, E. Ben-Naim

Eli Ben-Naim

We study steady-state properties of inelastic gases in two-dimensions in the presence of an energy source. We generalize previous hydrodynamic treatments to situations where high and low density regions coexist. The theoretical predictions compare well with numerical simulations in the nearly elastic limit. It is also seen that the system can achieve a nonequilibrium steady-state with asymmetric velocity distributions, and we discuss the conditions under which such situations occur.

The Brain As A Symbol-Processing Machine., Armando F. Rocha Jan 1997

The Brain As A Symbol-Processing Machine., Armando F. Rocha

Armando F Rocha

The knowledge accumulated about the biochemistry of the synapsis in the last decades completely changes the notion of brain processing founded exclusively over an electrical mechanism, toward that supported by a complex chemical message exchange occurring both locally, at the synaptic site, as well as at other localities, depending on the solubility of the involved chemical substances in the extracellular compartment. These biochemical transactions support a rich symbolic processing of the information both encoded by the genes and provided by actual data collected from the surrounding environment, by means of either special molecular or cellular receptor systems. In this processing, …

An Augmented Galerkin Method For Singular Integral Equations With Hilbert Kernel, S. Abbasbandy, E. Babolian Jan 1997

An Augmented Galerkin Method For Singular Integral Equations With Hilbert Kernel, S. Abbasbandy, E. Babolian

Saeid Abbasbandy

In recent papers, Delves [2] and others [1], [3] described a Chebyshev series method for the numerical solution of integral equations with non-singular kernels or some particular singular kernels, for example Green's function kernel, logarithmic and Cauchy kernels and so on. In this paper we describe a Fourier series expansion method for a class of singular integral equations with Hilbert kernel and constant coefficients. We give a number of numerical examples showing that Galerkin method works well in practice.

Neuroendocrine Aspects Of Primary Endogenous Depression Xv. Mathematical Modeling Of Nocturnal Melatonin Secretion In Major Depressives And Normal Controls, L. Kathleen Sekula, Joseph F. Lucke, E. Kevin Heist, R. Kenneth Czambel, Robert T. Rubin Jan 1997

Neuroendocrine Aspects Of Primary Endogenous Depression Xv. Mathematical Modeling Of Nocturnal Melatonin Secretion In Major Depressives And Normal Controls, L. Kathleen Sekula, Joseph F. Lucke, E. Kevin Heist, R. Kenneth Czambel, Robert T. Rubin

Joseph Lucke

We previously reported a trend toward a higher mean nocturnal serum melatonin (MEL) concentration, based on 30-min blood sampling over 24 h, in 23 female definite endogenous depressives compared to 23 matched normal female control subjects, and no significant difference in 15 male depressives compared to their controls (Rubin et al., 1992). In both groups of patients vs. their controls, there also were trends toward an earlier MEL rise time, by about 30 min, and a later MEL peak time, by about 90 min. Because the offset of MEL secretion was not estimated in that study, the total duration of …
