A Tale Of Two Viruses: Why Smallpox Was Eradicated And Polio Persists, Katherine G. Mcgough, Erin N. Bodine
A Tale Of Two Viruses: Why Smallpox Was Eradicated And Polio Persists, Katherine G. Mcgough, Erin N. Bodine
Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics
The smallpox and poliomyelitis (polio) viruses were, at a time, one of the largest threats to global public health killing millions until global eradication campaigns were put into effect. Vaccination led to the eradication of smallpox and the elimination of polio for most of the world. However, polio continues to persist at endemic levels in Pakistan and Afghanistan. We developed ODE models of smallpox and polio to explore differences in transmission dynamics and determine if the underlying biology has made poliomyelitis more difficult to eradicate. Our model analysis shows there are multiple factors which should allow polio to have a …

A Coupled Model Of Population, Poaching, And Economic Dynamics To Assess Rhino Conservation Through Legal Trade, Henry Doyle, Kylie Champagne, Ditto Rajpal, Grace Seebeck, David J. Gerberry
Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics
Rhinoceros populations in Africa are in peril largely due to the high value of their horns and the poaching that ensues. The strategy of legalizing the international trade of rhino horn is receiving increased support among both the people and government officials in Africa. Many in the international conservation community remain opposed to the idea. The legalization strategy is straightforward in theory: legalizing the trade of rhino horn will introduce a large quantity of horn to the market, the increased supply will lead to lower prices for rhino horn, and lower prices will reduce the overall poaching pressure these animals …

Compartmental Modeling For The Neophyte: An Application Of Berkeley Madonna, Olcay Akman, Siddharth Bhumpelli, Cody Cline, Christopher Hay-Jahans
Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics
Compartmental modeling serves as a necessary framework in many fields, especially biomathematics and ecology. This article introduces readers to a user-friendly approach to constructing compartmental models and solving the resulting systems of differential equations to simulate real-world applications. The platform used is Berkeley Madonna, a software package that has an intuitive graphical interface which empowers users—even those with limited mathematical and programming backgrounds—to focus on modeling concepts rather than mathematical or programming intricacies. This makes Berkeley Madonna an ideal platform for students, educators, and researchers.

Petrologic Relationship Between Lamprophyres, Carbonatites, And Heavy Rare-Earth Element Enriched Breccias At Hicks Dome, Jarek Trela, Jared T. Freiburg, Esteban Gazel, Laurence Nuelle, Anton H. Maria, David H. Malone, John M. Molinarolo
Faculty Publications-- Geography, Geology, and the Environment
New petrological, geochemical, and P–T modelling results from igneous samples clarify how carbonatite-lamprophyre magmatism, fluorite and rare earth element (REE) enrichment are petrogenetically related in southern Illinois. P–T modelling reveals that igneous rocks derive from a deep mantle carbonated source, that is consistent with trace element signatures for a fluorine-rich transition zone origin. Major element systematics suggests liquid-immiscibility with lamprophyric melts as the origin for Ca-carbonatites. Heavy REE (HREE) enrichments in Hicks Dome breccias likely formed through preferential partitioning and transport of HREE by brine-melts, exsolved from a deep carbonatite body. Brine-melts redistributed HREEs throughout the …
The Law Of The Iterated Logarithm For Lp-Norms Of Kernel Estimators Of Cumulative Distribution Functions, Fuxia Cheng
The Law Of The Iterated Logarithm For Lp-Norms Of Kernel Estimators Of Cumulative Distribution Functions, Fuxia Cheng
Faculty Publications – Mathematics
In this paper, we consider the strong convergence of Lp-norms (p ≥ 1) of a kernel estimator of a cumulative distribution function (CDF). Under some mild conditions, the law of the iterated logarithm (LIL) for the Lp-norms of empirical processes is extended to the kernel estimator of the CDF.

Supporting Dataset For The Influence Of Tile-Water On Groundwater Nitrate Concentrations Within A Saturated Riparian Buffer Zone, Aminat Tosin Abdulsalam, Eric Wade Peterson
Supporting Dataset For The Influence Of Tile-Water On Groundwater Nitrate Concentrations Within A Saturated Riparian Buffer Zone, Aminat Tosin Abdulsalam, Eric Wade Peterson
Faculty Publications-- Geography, Geology, and the Environment
In the U.S. Midwest, where fertile soils with high water retention are prevalent, the installation of tile drainage networks have become a common practice to drain excess soil water, which enhances plant growth and increases crop productivity. However, tile drainage networks coupled with the use of inorganic fertilizers have significant implications on water quality, contributing to eutrophication, leading to harmful algal blooms, and resulting in hypoxic conditions in surface water bodies. To mitigate excess nutrient exports to surface water bodies, edge-of-field practices have been introduced. One such practice is the saturated riparian buffer (SRB), which utilizes a diversion system to …
A Data-Driven Machine Learning Approach For Electron-Molecule Ionization Cross Sections, Allison Harris, Josh Nepomuceno
A Data-Driven Machine Learning Approach For Electron-Molecule Ionization Cross Sections, Allison Harris, Josh Nepomuceno
Faculty publications – Physics
Despite their importance in a wide variety of applications, the estimation of ionization cross sections for large molecules continues to present challenges for both experiment and theory. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have been shown to be an effective mechanism for estimating cross section data for atomic targets and a select number of molecular targets. We present an efficient ML model for predicting ionization cross sections for a broad array of molecular targets. Our model is a 3-layer neural network that is trained using published experimental datasets. There is minimal input to the network, making it widely applicable. We show that …

Sequential Infiltration Synthesis Of Silicon Dioxide In Polymers With Ester Groups─Insight From In Situ Infrared Spectroscopy, Mahua Biswas, Vepa Rozyyev, Anil U. Mane, Amelia Korveziroska, Uttam Manna, Jeffrey W. Elam
Faculty publications – Physics
New strategies to synthesize nanometer-scale silicon dioxide (SiO2) patterns have drawn much attention in applications such as microelectronic and optoelectronic devices, membranes, and sensors, as we are approaching device dimensions shrinking below 10 nm. In this regard, sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS), a two-step gas-phase molecular assembly process that enables localized inorganic material growth in the targeted reactive domains of polymers, is an attractive process. In this work, we performed in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) measurements during SiO2 SIS to investigate the reaction mechanism of trimethylaluminum (TMA) and tri(tert-pentoxy) silanol (TPS) precursors with polymers having ester functional groups (poly(methyl …
Quantum Interference Enhancement Of The Spin-Dependent Thermoelectric Response, Runa X. Bennett, Joshua R. Hendrickson, Justin P. Bergfield
Quantum Interference Enhancement Of The Spin-Dependent Thermoelectric Response, Runa X. Bennett, Joshua R. Hendrickson, Justin P. Bergfield
Faculty publications – Physics
We investigate the influence of quantum interference (QI) and broken spin-symmetry on the thermoelectric response of node-possessing junctions, finding a dramatic enhancement of the spin-thermopower (Ss), figure-of-merit (ZsT), and maximum thermodynamic efficiency (ηsmax) caused by destructive QI. Using many-body and single-particle methods, we calculate the response of 1,3-benzenedithiol and cross-conjugated molecule-based junctions subject to an applied magnetic field, finding nearly universal behavior over a range of junction parameters with Ss, ZsT, and reaching peak values of 2𝜋/ √3(𝑘/𝑒)2𝜋/3(𝑘/𝑒), 1.51, and 28% of Carnot efficiency, respectively. We also find that the …
