Paleoenvironmental History Of The Middle Ordovician Rugosa Of Eastern North America, Gretchen Hampt Andreasen Jan 1989

Paleoenvironmental History Of The Middle Ordovician Rugosa Of Eastern North America, Gretchen Hampt Andreasen

Honors Papers

Our understanding of the structure and function of biological systems can be increased when viewed in the context of their evolutionary history on a geological time scale. Generally, both paleoecology and ecology have focused on the interrelationships of organisms and their environments in short time frames. For instance, a paleoecologist might study the fossil communities of the Columbus Limestone reefal environment at Marblehead, Ohio, or an ecologist might attempt to characterize the interrelationship of glacier lilies and their pollinators. Both workers may realize that the organisms they study evolved in response to ecological pressures, yet neither, most likely, considers that …

Petrographic Criteria For The Recognition Of 'Magadi-Type' Cherts, Kathryn A. Schubel Jan 1987

Petrographic Criteria For The Recognition Of 'Magadi-Type' Cherts, Kathryn A. Schubel

Honors Papers

The Magadi cherts, inorganic lacustrine deposits from the Lake Magadi area, Kenya, are widely used as a modern analog to explain the origin of ancient inorganic cherts. Formed in a highly alkaline lake, as the result of a transformation from the sodium silicates minerals, magadiite and/or kenyaite, to quartz, the Magadi cherts possess a distinctive set of textural characteristics that allow them to be distinguished from cherts of different origin with only a limited number of samples. Textural characteristics that are diagnostic of the Magadi cherts and that can be used as a test for the occurrence of ancient 'Magadi-type' …

Two Upper Cretaceous Flysch Sequences In The Caribbean Mountains Of Venezuela And Their Relationship To Caribbean Tectonics, Stephen A. Meyer Jan 1979

Two Upper Cretaceous Flysch Sequences In The Caribbean Mountains Of Venezuela And Their Relationship To Caribbean Tectonics, Stephen A. Meyer

Honors Papers

The Caribbean Mountains of Venezuela reach from the Venezuelan Andes to the Northern Ranges of Trinidad. Upper Cretaceous and Paleocene flysch units deposited in a marine euxinic basin are crucial in unraveling the evolution of the mountains. Two formations in the Acarigua region (near the termination in the Venezuelan Andes), the Rio Guache and Nuezalito formations, are the most complete sections of these flysch sequences. A sedimentary petrologic study was undertaken to determine the source areas for these formations, to put age brackets on the timing of uplift and rotation of portions of the Caribbean Mountains.

The mountains are divided …

The Geochemistry And Origin Of Volcanic Features In The Quezaltenango Area, John R. Easter Jan 1975

The Geochemistry And Origin Of Volcanic Features In The Quezaltenango Area, John R. Easter

Honors Papers

The city of Quezaltenango is located in southwestern Guatemala, approximately 100 kilometers WNW of Guatemala City. The volcanic features of this area represent a portion of the Central American Quaternary volcanic chain. This chain seems to be controlled by the underthrusting of the Cocos plate beneath the Americas and Caribbean plates, which occurs in the Middle American trench. The two overriding plates, which in the Caribbean finds topographical expression in the Cayman Trough. Molnar and Skyes have suggested that faults in eastern Guatemala may represent the continental extension of the transform. Stoiber and Carr feel that this plate boundary is …

A Paleontological Study Of The Gunflint Microfossil Assemblage, J. William Schopf Jan 1963

A Paleontological Study Of The Gunflint Microfossil Assemblage, J. William Schopf

Honors Papers

Precambrian microfossils discovered in nonferruginous charts of the lower "algal" members of the Gunflint formation of southern Ontario are of great interest in the evolutionary scheme of primitive life. The environment of deposition of the deposit, and the indigenous and biogenic nature of the microfossil assemblage are considered. A discussion of the small but diversified assemblage, including twelve micro-forms, seven of which have not previously been reported, is presented.

A Phase Of The Upper Devonian Of Western Highland County, Virginia, Helen Pulver Foreman Jan 1948

A Phase Of The Upper Devonian Of Western Highland County, Virginia, Helen Pulver Foreman

Honors Papers

This paper is a study of the Brallier and Chemung formations of west Highland County, Virginia. The limits of the Brallier formation are determined on the basis ot faunal and lithological evidence, and correlations made with formations in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia.

The field work was carried on during the latter part of the summer of 1947 and the identification and correlations worked out in the winter of 1947 and the spring of 1948.

A Textural Analysis Of The Bedford Shale Of Lorain County, Ohio, Troy James Laswell Jan 1948

A Textural Analysis Of The Bedford Shale Of Lorain County, Ohio, Troy James Laswell

Honors Papers

Throughout the course of the school year 1947-48 the writer has collected specimens of the Bedford shale from various localities within Lorain County, Ohio. Textural and mineralogical analyses have been made of the specimens in order to determine the textural and petrologic variation between the two facies, and whether each of the facies was deposited under similar conditions.

A Mechanical Analysis Of The Oriskany Sandstone In Northwestern Virginia, Selma G. Hirsh Jan 1938

A Mechanical Analysis Of The Oriskany Sandstone In Northwestern Virginia, Selma G. Hirsh

Honors Papers

The primary purpose of this paper is to present specific data as a means of explaining the sedimentation conditions at the time of deposition of the Oriskany Sandstone. The data were obtained through the use of laboratory methods upon specimens taken from several outcrops in the vicinity of Monterey, Virginia (see Darton's U.S.G.S. folio No. 51). In addition to the presentation of objective results, the author has attempted to make tentative interpretations of them, based primarily upon textural and shape analysis of the sediment. The writer realizes that the investigation is inadequate in many respects, due to lack of time …

The Paleozoic Stratigraphy Of Lorain County, Ohio, Edwin Hugo Wenberg Jan 1938

The Paleozoic Stratigraphy Of Lorain County, Ohio, Edwin Hugo Wenberg

Honors Papers

During the course of the school year 1936-37 spent at Oberlin, which is situated near the center of Lorain County, Ohio, the writer had the opportunity to study the outcrops and to gather records of wells in this area.

A study of the strata of this county is confusing because the same rocks have been described under different formational names. Originally many of these strata were traced northward from type sections in central Ohio or westward from type sections near Cleveland. At a later date many of the strata were reclassified and assigned to formations which had been traced westward …

Amherst Township, A Regional Study, Ruth C. Rockwood Jan 1936

Amherst Township, A Regional Study, Ruth C. Rockwood

Honors Papers

Amherst township was selected as the area to be studied because it was believed to be as nearly representative of the aspects of land and life in north central Ohio as any small area that could be found. It is located on a section of the Lake Plain which has somewhat parallel lines formed by three beach-ridges, and on the northern edge of the Glaciated Plain. Then, the quarrying of the world famous Berea sandstone gives somewhat of an individual aspect to the small towns within Amherst township.

The purpose of the paper is to describe the physical landscape, and …

Geology And Acid Intrusions Of Marlboro Township, Vermont, Stanley Gordon Elder Jan 1931

Geology And Acid Intrusions Of Marlboro Township, Vermont, Stanley Gordon Elder

Honors Papers

It is the aim of this paper to examine the mineralization resulting from the intrusion of acid dikes and veins into the schists of Marlboro township, Vermont, and to give a brief account of the geology of the area.

The problem of mineralization in southern Vermont is one which has been treated very slightly and is one which is deserving of more study than it has received. This problem results from the presence of numerous acid igneous masses in all the formation of the region. Petrographic research in the igneous intrusions was done partially with the hope that the study …
