Pioneer Science and the Great Plagues covers the century when infectious plagues—anthrax, tuberculosis, tetanus, plague, smallpox, and polio—were conquered, and details the important role that veterinary scientists played. Only 12 hours before this photograph was taken the lamb pictured was alive and healthy.
When examined it was very stiff and unable to stand. A few hours later it was dead.

THE disease tetanus occurs in practically all of the animals and man.
It is caused by the tetanus bacillus (Clostridium tetani) and results from contamination of wounds and raw surfaces with materials such as earth or dust containing these organisms.
