Orofacial clefts are the second most common type of birth defect in the United States and are continuing to grow each year (Nasreddine et al., 2021). Based on the National Birth Defects Prevention Network annual report in 2014, 1 in 1,700 babies were born in the United States with a cleft palate (Mai CT et al., 2019). While there are different types of orofacial clefts, for this research the term cleft palate will be used to determine appropriate interventions within the scope of occupational therapy, such as positioning, bottle modifications, and sensorimotor techniques. Background: This project is to increase the confidence of parents/caregivers via education about their infants that may not otherwise be provided by other health care professionals. This project also provides early intervention to the infants in efforts to facilitate their maximum development through proper positioning for sleeping and play. Purpose: The purpose of this project was a parental education class for parents/primary caregivers of babies ages 0-6 months. Infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) require life sustaining intervention for weeks to months after birth. This intervention is remarkably stressful for both the infant, who is ill-equipped to handle life outside the womb, and for the parents who are filled with fear and stress due to the illness of their son or daughter. The experience of hospitalization can lead to stress, shame, anxiety, and even post-traumatic stress disorder for families of NICU infants. An Exploration Of How And Why Primary Care Providers Educate Infant Caregivers About Positioning, Amy Greenspon Choffin

A review of the literature indicates that how infants are positioned is related to the risk of SIDS, the incidence and severity of plagiocephaly, torticollis, and developmental delays. A quantitative approach with survey methodology was used with 66 pediatric primary care providers responding to 26 questions. Overall, PCPs are educating caregivers about sleep positioning with a high frequency. There was a relationship between practice site, and the frequency of sleep positioning education is provided. While the participants provide education about awake positioning, and the use of positioning devices, it was with less frequency than they do about sleep positioning; there …
