A knee injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a common injury among athletes, despite growing knowledge of common injury mechanisms. The athletes with the highest risk of injuring their ACLs are those playing sports that require extreme cutting or pivoting with a sudden change in speed. ACL injuries are most commonly caused by a non-contact process, usually in conjunction with a sudden change of direction or speed. Females are 4-6 times more likely than males to injure their ACL.
