ABSTRACT

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex condition affecting multiple domains of development. Physical Therapists (PTs) are members of the interprofessional team addressing the needs of individuals with ASD. A lack of uniformity in evidence-based assessments and practices employed by therapists to address the needs of children with ASD exists in the literature. PTs often implement approaches that are not evidence-based but rather learned from more experienced professionals or discovered by trial and error.

Background: The experience of supervising an underperforming student (UPS) in clinical education and failure to fail (FTF) are described in health professions such as nursing and medicine but there is little description of it in Physical Therapist (PT) clinical education.

In athletic training (AT) education, the first-time BOC pass rate is a significant marker of a program’s success, and the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) requires programs to maintain a first-time 3-year aggregate BOC examination pass rate over 70%. There is limited published research on BOC pass rates on Professional Masters’ (PM) programs. Background: More than 4 million people are admitted annually to intensive care units (ICUs). Due to immobility, many ICU survivors experience significant cognitive, psychological, and physically disabling side effects regardless of admitting diagnosis. Multiple studies and quality improvement projects have shown the safety, feasibility, and benefits of early mobilization in the ICU setting. Hodgson et al (2014) published consensus recommendations for safe active mobilization of mechanically ventilated critically ill adults. Background: Approximately 10-20% of individuals who sustain a concussion will experience post-concussion syndrome, defined as symptomology beyond the traditional 7-10-day concussion recovery period. A particular area of symptomology, sensory processing deficits was explored in this study to ascertain the prevalence of these deficits along with possible associations with QOL and everyday functional outcomes. Background: The governing bodies of athletic training have been putting an emphasis on evidence-based practice (EBP) through college curriculum changes and continuing education requirements. Research has shown these interventions are increasing knowledge, but there is still a knowledge to practice gap.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the decisions involved in EBP adoption by practicing athletic trainers (ATs).

Methods: This study utilized a general qualitative approach that was exploratory in nature. Fifteen participants participated in the study, and all were practicing certified athletic trainers who stated they were using EBP when making treatment decisions.

Background. Hospitalized older adults are susceptible to adverse events reporting decreased activity, falls and dependence in activities of daily living after hospitalization. Falls incidence is higher among those in the hospital compared to community dwelling older adults. While several studies have reported a decrement in performance by older adults while walking and concurrently performing a dual task on even surfaces, to date the effects of dual tasking while walking on uneven surfaces commonly found in the community has received less attention. Thus, we sought to test the hypothesis that an incremental decrement in gait parameters will be observed, when walking on an uneven versus an even surface and furthermore, that this decrement would be dependent upon the concurrent performance of a secondary cognitive and/or motor task in functionally independent-living-community older adults.
