Viruses can trigger rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or inflammatory arthritis (IA). Our study provides insight into etiology of RA/IA. We analyzed the evidence relating to the risk of RA after viral infections; estimated the distribution of IA onsets over time; quantified the effect of influenza on the risk of IA.

Results of systematic review and meta-analysis showed that the risk of RA/IA is increased after parvovirus B19 and chikungunya virus. There seems to be a risk of RA after chronic hepatitis C (HCV), but whether it is a true RA or HCV-associated arthritis is not clear.

We estimated the distribution of …

Pandemic Planning: Estimating Disease Burden Of Pandemic Influenza To Guide Preparedness Planning Decisions For Nebraska Medicine, Angelia Wimberly

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the 1918 “Spanish Flu” outbreak that killed 50-100 million people worldwide. If a pandemic of this proportion happened today, the federal pandemic influenza plan predicts that 30 percent of the population could become infected with up to 50 percent seeking outpatient care. With Nebraska Medicine currently operating at nearly full capacity (95-97%), surge capacity for hospital space, staff, and supplies would be in severe demand and would quickly overwhelm the organization. To assess the impact of pandemic influenza in Douglas County Nebraska and Nebraska Medicine, pandemic modeling tool FluAid and FluSurge 2.0 …

Associations Between Nurse Experience, Clinical Specialty Setting, And Level Of Nursing Education With Adherence To Clinical Practice Guidelines For Inpatient Influenza And Pneumococcal Vaccination Administration, Amy C. Alsante, Dnp, Ms, Rn, Ne-Bc, Chep

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: This research project examines associations between years of nursing practice and compliance with clinical practice guidelines for inpatient influenza/pneumococcal vaccination administration. Previous research demonstrates novice nurses are at higher risk for errors of omission and face challenges with critical thinking.

Objectives: 1) Identify associations between years of practice and compliance with clinical practice guidelines for inpatient influenza/pneumococcal vaccination administration and 2) to identify associations among independent variables including levels of education, and specialty setting.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted to identify associations between years of practice and compliance with clinical practice guidelines for inpatient influenza/pneumococcal vaccination administration. …
