Social determinants of health play a crucial role in explaining the variation of potentially avoidable hospitalizations (PAH) due to Ambulatory Care Sensitive Conditions (ACSCs). Utilizing data from the National Inpatient Sample from 2018 to 2020 in the United States, this study conducted retrospective cohort analyses to explore the relationships between sociodemographic factors, specifically income, race, geography, age, and sex and PAH. Our approach used multilevel logistic regression models to adjust for potential confounders and account for clustering of admissions within hospitals. Paediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (POHCA) is associated with poor survival and severe neurological sequelae. This thesis aims to explore the relationship between sociodemographic factors and POHCA. The findings from our systematic review indicate that there are racial disparities in POHCA risk and in the provision of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation. There was little evidence of sociodemographic disparities in bystander defibrillation, survival and neurological outcome, particularly across adjusted analyses. The findings from our case-control study in Ontario, Canada, indicate that children living in marginalized areas have an elevated risk of experiencing POHCA. The goal of this thesis was to evaluate the association of social determinants with CRC screening in screen-eligible adults. We used Andersen’s Behavioural Model of Health Service Utilization and the PROGRESS-Plus Framework to conceptualize potential social determinants. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to assess the diagnostic accuracy of these ML classifiers for cataracts currently published in the literature. This study assessed cost-effectiveness of pharmacogenomics (PGx)-based azathioprine (AZA) compared to standard AZA therapy for ulcerative colitis (UC) patients in Canada. A patient-level Microsimulation model was developed to compare the lifetime costs and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) gained by a hypothetical cohort of UC patients with age and sex characteristics. The parameters used in the model were derived from the published literature and costs from the Ontario Schedules of Payments and published sources. Those with multimorbidity face a particular challenge as multimorbidity is associated with increased need for healthcare. The purpose of this study was to compare healthcare utilization, as measured by number of visits to family physicians and specialists, between immigrants and Canadian-born populations with multimorbidity, stratified by sex and for specific chronic diseases. • 407 (0.28%) patients developed epilepsy within 2 years of their ICU discharge, 103 (25.3%) of whom were exposed to sepsis.
• Sepsis survivors were significantly more likely to develop epilepsy, relative to non-septic ICU survivors.
• Among sepsis survivors, epilepsy risk increased with age and was higher among those with chronic kidney disease.

• Stroke is a common cause of epilepsy in older adults, but little is known about stroke-related epilepsy or its outcomes in this population.
• 1.1% of older adult stroke survivors developed epilepsy in this study, of whom 12.9% developed refractory epilepsy, indicating that this population is particularly responsive to treatment.
• Over 85% of deaths in this population are not due to stroke or epilepsy.

Maternal deaths have been one of the leading causes of deaths in sub-Saharan Africa. Delivering at an institution can prevent the majority of maternal deaths in developing countries. A national cross-sectional survey of Kenya was used to determine if the quality of antenatal care (ANC) provided to women is associated with their intention to deliver at the same facility. Multilevel mixed-effects logistic regression was used to examine this relationship. Quality of ANC variables assessed in this study were not significantly associated with women’s intention to deliver at the same facility. I identify two cohorts of cancer patients with known and unknown primary tumours. Cancer of unknown primary (CUP) is defined by the presence of pathologically identified metastatic disease without clinical or radiological evidence of a primary tumour. Using the Ontario Cancer Registry, Same Day Surgery/Discharge Abstract Database and Ontario Health Insurance Plan, a novel linkage strategy was developed to cross-validate diagnoses. I found CUP patients represent a significant portion of all metastatic cancers. CUP patients with histological confirmed disease, squamous cell histology, or metastases localized to nodal regions had significantly better survival than other CUP patients. Low autonomy resulting from gender inequalities in women has been identified as a contributing factor to the disproportionate impact of HIV/AIDS on women, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This study explored the association between women’s autonomy and HIV/AIDS knowledge and attitudes in Ethiopia using the 2005 and 2011 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Surveys. Objectives: Certain Canadian subpopulations observe numerous modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for diabetes. This study compares immigrants and Aboriginals (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) with Canada-born individuals at higher risks for diabetes, and deciphers the determinant differences between them.

Methods: Pooled Canadian Community Health Survey data (2001-2010) were used. Time trends for diabetes within each subsample were calculated using individual survey year prevalence rates; diabetes diagnoses were self-reported (N=33,565). Various risk factors were also examined using logistic regression.

Objective:

To evaluate the relationship between perceived social support and HRQOL (physical and emotional) in low SES breast cancer survivors.

Methods:

A cross-sectional study design was used to measure perceived social support at 18 months and HRQOL at 3 years after breast cancer diagnosis using MOS SS and MOS SF-36, respectively. Multiple regression analyses were used to evaluate the relationship.

Results:

Menopause at the time of diagnosis, adjunct chemotherapy, adjunct radiation therapy, co-morbidities, treatment side effects and depression were negatively associated with PCS scores (p < 0.01). Treatment side effects, anxiety and depression were negatively associated with MCS scores (p < 0.01).
