Purpose: The study purpose was to learn and describe 1) where homeless shelter residents receive health care, 2) what contributes to positive or negative health care experiences among shelter residents, and 3) shelter resident perceptions toward health care.
Methods: Semi-structured interviews (SSIs) utilizing purposive sampling and focus group discussions (FGDs) utilizing convenience sampling were conducted at 6 homeless shelters in Seattle-King County, Washington, during July–October 2021. All residents (age ≥ 18) were eligible to participate. SSIs were conducted with 25 residents, and 8 FGDs were held. Thematic analysis was conducted using Dedoose.

Barriers to access and utilization of primary care affect nearly 9% of the nation’s population (USDHHS, n.d.a). These barriers are important to evaluate for members of the aging population due to increased need for health care as a result of chronic conditions and falls. Research indicates that access for the aging population is affected by a variety of factors, including: transportation, non-financial barriers, and internal factors. Issues surrounding current delivery of care, such as a workforce shortage of primary care physicians, have compounded the problem even further. The Patient Perspective: Receiving Care In The Post-Aca Era, Melanie F. Molina, Medell Briggs-Malonson
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
The purpose of this study was to explore patients’ experiences and perceptions regarding the accessibility of healthcare services within a low-income, culturally diverse community in the post-Affordable Care Act era. We conducted a cross-sectional qualitative analysis of 32 interviews with patients that presented to a community emergency department in South L.A with one or more adult ambulatory care sensitive conditions. Both insured and uninsured patients shared many of the same experiences and perceptions when accessing healthcare services. The most prominent commonalities were related to healthcare cost, difficulty qualifying for insurance, lack of awareness of existing services, and healthcare service availability. …
