Combatting Abortion Misinformation And Disinformation In Medical Education, Jaya Prakash, Deborah Bartz
Combatting Abortion Misinformation And Disinformation In Medical Education, Jaya Prakash, Deborah Bartz
Feminist Pedagogy
Abstract Introduction: Although abortion has historically been federally legal, functional access to abortion care has been thwarted by inflammatory political discourse. Abortion misinformation and disinformation have been deliberately intertwined into political agendas and ideologies, widening the gap between the lay public’s perception of and patients’ lived experience with abortion care. The politicization of abortion care has adverse effects on its provision and training along lines of inequity and marginalization established by preexisting systems of oppression and structural violence. Critical feminist pedagogy—an examination of class, gender, and sexuality on patriarchal misrepresentations of abortion information—can guide medical students to recognize and combat …

“How Did I Not Know Any Of This?” Teaching Reproductive Justice In An Abortion Desert, Lena R. Hann
“How Did I Not Know Any Of This?” Teaching Reproductive Justice In An Abortion Desert, Lena R. Hann
Feminist Pedagogy
Reproductive justice is often used interchangeably with reproductive rights and reproductive health, overshadowing the importance of each movement’s contributions to understanding bodily autonomy. I am a former abortion care worker, now faculty at a Lutheran liberal arts college in an abortion desert. Antiabortion events on campus motivated students to request evidence-based education about reproductive issues, leading me to develop an immersive reproductive justice course. Reproductive justice is a framework that analyzes how systems of power prevent equitable access to and enjoyment of rights and health. The course examined how multifaceted oppressions shape reproductive self-determination and included content about abortion, adoption, …
Bifidobacterial Metabolism Of Fucosylated Human Milk Oligosaccharides Influences Structure And Function Of The Infant Gut Microbiome, Liv R. Dedon
Doctoral Dissertations
Human milk contains human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) that are indigestible and pass intact through the infant gastrointestinal tract where they are available for microbial metabolism. HMOs incorporate the same monosaccharide building blocks but vary structurally in primary sequence of monomeric components. Primary sequences are further diversified by degree of polymerization, branching, and secondary modifications such as fucosylation. Fucosylated HMOs (fHMOs) are highly abundant and can account for over 30% of total HMOs. Infant-colonizing Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis (B. infantis) possesses a specialized gene cluster conveying the ability to metabolize fHMOs. This study presents an in-depth analysis of B. …

Differential Toxicity Of Pm2.5 Components And Modified Health Effects Modeling: A Case Study In Nepal, Jeremy Brownholtz
Masters Theses
During the latter part of the 20th century, a transition away from coal as a major energy source in developed countries was accompanied by a notable decrease in air pollution-related deaths in those countries. Currently the same phenomenon is being observed in developing nations like China and India. However, many areas that do still rely on coal for their energy production or industrial needs also reflect a gap in research on the effects of those specific processes on local populations. Located in Nepal at the foot of the Himalayan Plateau, Kathmandu represents one such location. The local economy of …

What Are The Barriers To Midwife Service Utilization Among Low-Risk Pregnant Women In Florida?, Ileana Cruz
What Are The Barriers To Midwife Service Utilization Among Low-Risk Pregnant Women In Florida?, Ileana Cruz
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Background and Need: Midwives are healthcare professionals that are educated, trained, licensed, and regulated to provide primary care; gynecologic, prenatal care; care during pregnancy, childbirth, postnatal care; and care of the normal newborn during the first 28 days of life (Florida Senate, 2021; Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses [AWHONN], 2016). The Midwives Alliance of North America also defined these professionals as providers who support labor and birth through relationships of trust and confidence with their patients (Midwives Alliance of North America [MANA], n.d.). If complications arise during pregnancy, midwives collaborate with other physicians and refer the case …

Investigating Interactive Methods In Remote Chestfeeding Support For Lactation Consulting Professionals In Brazil, Jessica De Souza, Cinthia Calsinski, Kristina Chamberlain, Franceli L. Cibrian, Edward Jay Wang
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Objective: Lactation consultants (LCs) positively impact chestfeeding rates by providing in-person support to struggling parents. In Brazil, LCs are a scarce resource and in high demand, risking chestfeeding rates across many communities nationwide. The transition to remote consultations during the COVID-19 pandemic made LCs face several challenges to solve chestfeeding problems due to limited technical resources for management, communication, and diagnosis. This study investigates the main technological issues LCs have in remote consultations and what technology features are helpful for chestfeeding problem-solving in remote settings.
Methods: This paper implements qualitative investigation through a contextual study (n = 10) and …

Coarse-Grained Molecular Simulations And Ensemble-Based Mutational Profiling Of Protein Stability In The Different Functional Forms Of The Sars-Cov-2 Spike Trimers: Balancing Stability And Adaptability In Ba.1, Ba.2 And Ba.2.75 Variants, Gennady M. Verkhivker, Mohammed Alshahrani, Grace Gupta
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Evolutionary and functional studies have suggested that the emergence of Omicron variants can be determined by multiple fitness tradeoffs including immune escape, binding affinity, conformational plasticity, protein stability, and allosteric modulation. In this study, we embarked on a systematic comparative analysis of the conformational dynamics, electrostatics, protein stability, and allostery in the different functional states of spike trimers for BA.1, BA.2, and BA.2.75 variants. Using efficient and accurate coarse-grained simulations and atomistic reconstruction of the ensembles, we examined the conformational dynamics of the spike trimers that agree with the recent functional studies, suggesting that BA.2.75 trimers are the most stable …
Parental Perceptions Of The Hpv Vaccine For Prevention Of Anogenital And Oropharyngeal Cancers, Beth I. Schwartz, Merissa Maccani, Shalini Bansal, Meghan Gannon
Parental Perceptions Of The Hpv Vaccine For Prevention Of Anogenital And Oropharyngeal Cancers, Beth I. Schwartz, Merissa Maccani, Shalini Bansal, Meghan Gannon
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Papers
Background and Objectives
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is implicated in the development of both anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers. Although HPV vaccination prevents the majority of anogenital and head and neck cancers (HNC), vaccination rates remain low, especially among males. Known barriers to vaccination are knowledge gaps and vaccine acceptability. The objective of this study is to explore parental knowledge, perceptions, and decision-making processes about HPV and HPV vaccination for both anogenital and HNC.
Methods
This qualitative study recruited parents of children and adolescents aged 8–18 to participate in semi-structured telephone interviews. Data were analyzed using thematic analyses, informed by an inductive …
