BACKGROUND: More than 35 million U.S. children visit the emergency department (ED) each year. Triage is the family’s first interaction with the healthcare team and a crucial component of care that directs the course of the ED visit. The use of standardized triage protocols, like the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) algorithm, is shown to improve overall patient health outcomes in the pediatric ED. For triage algorithms to be safe and effective, continuing education for pediatric ED nurses is important.

Only 50% of pediatric patients presenting with significant pain receive any form of analgesia while in the emergency department (ED). The American College of Emergency Physicians endorses the use of triage protocols to improve the speed and consistency of analgesia in the ED. However, given the unique needs of the pediatric population insufficient evidence exists, if any, to support the use of triage protocols for their treatment in the ED. Introduction. The majority of pediatric emergency patients are seen in mixed-age emergency departments and triaged by general emergency nurses. Educational methods for teaching pediatric triage education to general emergency nurses have not been well studied, and previous studies of the use of the Emergency Severity Index in children have been performed primarily in centers that are high volume for pediatrics. This evidence-based project (EBP) involved development and implementation of an emergency protocol (EP) education program for high school athletes and coaches at a southern California high school. A Doctor of Nursing Practice student, collaborating with health care and athletic personnel, conducted an assessment of the high school’s EPs for management of asthma, anaphylaxis, diabetes, and heat illness. Then, an EP and educational program were created; coaches and athletes were educated on the protocol during a coaches’ meeting and practice times, respectively.
