Caring is a central theme of the nursing profession; the essence of nursing. The preoperative and postoperative surgical settings at a large Midwestern Hospital are extremely busy and very demanding, which can affect patient care. It is essential for Patient Care Assistants (PCAs) to identify caring actions and to provide authentic caring for patients and families. Themes of witnessed uncaring behavior include: rough handling, loud and inappropriate conversations, ignoring the patient or family, abrupt answers to questions, and negative non-verbal body language. The role of the hematology ambulatory registered nurse (HARN) is currently disorganized at a large Midwestern clinic. Cumently the HARN is responsible for telephone care, lab results, prescription refills, patient education, submitting forms, and helping patients with miscellaneous items. The HARN is pulled in several directions throughout the day. With healthcare reimbursement changing, there is a growing need for HARNs to be utilized to one's fullest potential and licensure. Caring has been described as the essence of nursing. What nurses do as they care for patients and others is multi-dimensional, complex, and essential. Nursing's ability to clearly define and articulate what caring is guides the ethics, values, decisions, and foundations of nursing practice.
