Abstract
For chief nurse executives to survive in contemporary healthcare organizations must cultivate nurse leaders who are poised to produce nurse job satisfaction and subsequently, patient outcomes, including quality and patient safety. The article describes an integrated evidence review of the relationship between transformational leadership and nurse job satisfaction. The author identifies implications for practice and further research.

Problem. This academic medical center was increasing bed-capacity and needed to hire 12 additional nurse managers (NM) to meet these new requirements. Promoting assistant nurse managers (ANM) to the NM role saves time and money, supports leadership and cultural continuity, and demonstrates a strong organizational commitment to internal human capital.

Aim: This paper summarizes the project development, implementation and outcomes of an Assistant Nurse Manager leadership laboratory program and elements involved in the coursework. Through lecture, simulation, and mentoring components, noted change in leadership ability of novice/advanced beginner Assistant Nurse Managers were assessed over a six-month period and monitored the effects on quality and financial metrics, as well as the self-confidence of the Assistant Nurse Managers. Evaluation conducted included both quantitative and qualitative outcome assessment.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to ascertain nursing leaders and direct care nurses’ perceptions of the health of the work environment in medical-surgical, intermediate care, and progressive care units at an acute care hospital located in central Kentucky. METHODS: This study employed a descriptive, correlational design. Bivariate statistical procedures were utilized to determine the relationship between the perceptions of the health of the work environment and nursing turnover and engagement. RESULTS: Direct care nurses and nurse leaders both scored effective decision making/skilled communication as the healthiest attribute of the work environment, while genuine teamwork was scored as the …
