The demand for neurology consultation far outweighs the number of specialists, thus causing long wait-times for consultation. Other contributing factors to obtaining timely consultation include, quality of information sent with the referral, insurance authorization, triage process, and appointment availability. This retrospective quality improvement study explored the effects of a referral triage process on reducing appointment wait time. All referrals were sent to one fax number and a new standard referral and triage process was implemented with specific operators with defined roles and responsibilities. Abstract Patients undergoing spinal anesthesia for total joint arthroplasty (TJA) must urinate and ambulate within 1-hour before discharge from the post-anesthesia care unit to indicate a healthy return of lower body neuro-function after spinal administration. The most common spinal medication used is bupivacaine which has complications including postoperative urinary retention (POUR), altered proprioception, delayed ambulation, and prolonged motor block, resulting in increased cost and length of stay. One alternative solution is mepivacaine, an intermediate local anesthetic lasting 1.5 to 2.5 hours with comparative surgical blockade but a quicker motor and sensory function return. Nursing house supervisors oversee hospital operations during evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, yet many feel disconnected from others in the nursing leadership team. These individuals work as the sole leader on duty, having limited interaction with the daytime leaders and often lack formal leadership development. This quantitative, quasi-experimental study explored the effects of implementing a formal educational and team building program on the perception of the supervisor’s leadership skills as well as collaboration with the leadership team. At a regional Veterans Administration (VA) hospital, nurses performing case management were unable to perform face-to-face visits with patients due to coronavirus. Care coordination and discharge planning efforts occurred through telephonic case management to preserve personal protective equipment and reduce transmission rates through social distancing. Trust and rapport between patients and nurses were reduced without personal contact. Peplau’s theory of interpersonal relations described six nurse roles and three phases of relationship development required to create therapeutic nurse-patient relationships. Connectedness was a key concept considered to be the path to a successful meaningful therapeutic nurse-patient relationship (Hrabe, 2005).

Acute care settings continue to be the primary setting for undergraduate nursing education clinical experiences. Staff nurses in acute care settings are expected to provide nursing care with pre-licensure nursing students at their side (even though there are little to no incentives for staff nurses to provide mentoring leadership), which most often takes the form of professional role modeling. In addition, there is no clear evaluative expectation that motivates staff nurses to provide contextual role modeling. Without stated expectations, staff nurse perception of the significance of role modeling for pre-licensure non-precepted nursing students may be deficient.
