B743: Primary Health Care And The Developmentally Disabled: An Analysis Of The Normalization Principle In The State Of Maine, Dennis A. Watkins, Julia M. Watkins, Sheila R. Bissonnette, Betty A. Brown
Bulletins
At the time of publication, there existed an estimated group of 10 million American people defined as developmentally disabled. Stimulated in part by the often observed dehumanizing environment of institutional arrangement for the mentally disabled, the search for more humane treatment and management alternative has pointed in the direction of what has been termed ' normalization."
In 1969, the Danish Mental Retardation Service defined normalization as '' letting the mentally retarded obtain an existence as close to normal as possible."
The focus of this study is on barriers to the normalization principle in the provision of primary health care to …

Oral History Interview: Frank Brooks, Frank Brooks
0064: Marshall University Oral History Collection
Frank Brooks was born in Fayette County, WV, but grew up in Carter County, KY, in the early 1900s. He attended a one room school house through the third grade. Mr. Brooks began working in coal mines with his father in Borderland, WV, when he was 13 years old. In the audio clip provided, he discusses his first time in a coal mine. He focuses on how he tried to appear bigger than he was in order to be able to work. In his interview, Mr. Brooks compares and contrasts the labor conditions in the mines before and after unionization. …
The Ecology Of Stray Dogs: A Study Of Free-Ranging Urban Animals, Alan M. Beck
The Ecology Of Stray Dogs: A Study Of Free-Ranging Urban Animals, Alan M. Beck
Purdue University Press Books
This readable contribution should be in the hands of any city or state agency dealing with dog problems or with public health problems. The book should also be of considerable interest to all ecologists, behaviorists, and biologists. This is a unique book in which the ecologist's methods are applied to understanding and possibly solving one of our urban problems. This fascinating small monograph is the work of a man who-armed with camera, tape recorder and thermometer and driving not a Land-Rover but a used sedan-studied free-ranging dogs among the bricks of Baltimore.
The Principle Of Normalization In Human Services, Wolf P. Wolfensberger, Bengt Nirje, Simon Olshansky, Robert Perske, Philip Roos
The Principle Of Normalization In Human Services, Wolf P. Wolfensberger, Bengt Nirje, Simon Olshansky, Robert Perske, Philip Roos
Books: Wolfensberger Collection
The underlying principles inherent in Normalization have lead to such recent developments as the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Mentally Retarded Persons brought into being by the International League of Societies for the Mentally Handicapped.
This book is the first one to document normalization from its origins in Scandinavian services to the mentally retarded to its implications to the field of human services. The National Institute on Mental Retardation has published this text to support the current growing interest in normalization concepts and fuller integration of the retarded into the community. This concept is currently having a major …

The Wedding Night, Ida C. Craddock, Paul Royster , Editor
The Wedding Night, Ida C. Craddock, Paul Royster , Editor
Zea E-Books in American Studies
Ida Craddock took her own life in October 1902, rather than face the 5-year federal prison term she seemed certain to receive following her conviction for distributing this work through the U.S. Mail. It is a short (24-page) pamphlet addressed to young women and men about to embark on a sexual relationship and an honest and frank effort to alleviate the ignorance which both sexes often brought to the marriage union. Craddock's discussion of the "sexual act" stressed that empathy and consideration for one's partner were the vital elements for an enduring marriage. Craddock neither shrank from the description of …
