Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of active recovery, electrical stimulation, cupping therapy, and sequential compression for decreasing blood lactate in collegiate pitchers after pitching. Methods: 20 healthy collegiate baseball pitchers consented to participate in this study as a convenience sample (age 21.6 ± 1.90 years; height 175.61 ± 21.41 cm; mass 80.33 ± 8.07 kg). A total of 17 participants completed the study. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of the four interventions and rotated between interventions in one-week increments. The interventions used were active recovery, electrical stimulation, cupping therapy, and sequential compression. The …

Recent advances in concussion research have shed light on numerous mental and physiological factors that may complicate concussion recovery. Systematic reviews of the existing literature have found that premorbid mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety may be a predictor of complicated concussion recovery, but studies have not had an appropriate design to isolate anxiety or depression as a predictor of lengthened recovery. This study investigated if athletes with a history of premorbid anxiety and/or depression would have a longer time of recovery than athletes without this history. Male and female athletes from a Division-1 athletic department treated for …

Throwing athletes of all sports have similarities, even if the sport itself is very different. Throwing an object creates a great amount of stress on the body, particularly at the shoulder and the elbow. A baseball pitcher should train and compete in all three planes of movement-sagittal, frontal and transverse. Training for throwing athletes has two main goals: to increase throwing power and to reduce throwing injuries. Analyzing training habits of a throwing athlete includes an understanding of the modalities they perform in order to prevent potential injuries from occurring. Baseball pitchers are extremely susceptible to throwing injuries, and must …
