Predicting Barriers To Performing Concussion Education: Identifying Opportunities For Change, Julia D. Drattell, Emily Kroshus, Johna K. Register-Mihalik, Christopher D'Lauro, Julianne D. Schmidt

Georgia Public Health Association Annual Meeting and Conference

Background: There are many barriers that impact effective delivery of sport-related concussion education which can be described through the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation Behavior (COM-B) model of behavior change. Barriers may be predicted by factors like school levels, sports medicine access at school, and the educator’s professional experience or gender. Athletic trainers (ATs), medical professionals often employed in school athletics, usually provide concussion-related education. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore factors that influence ATs’ barriers to providing concussion education.

Methods: The National Athletic Trainers’ Association distributed an electronic survey to 9,997 member ATs working in secondary schools (SSs) …

Factors Associated With Intention To Disclose Concussive Symptoms In Active Duty Soldiers, Carly Beck Jan 2022

Factors Associated With Intention To Disclose Concussive Symptoms In Active Duty Soldiers, Carly Beck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Concussion disclosure is a heavily researched topic, and while previous literature has explored predictors of concussion disclosure in numerous populations, research within the active duty Soldier population is limited. This study further explored predictors of concussion disclosure to a medical professional or leadership in the active duty Solider population through the lens of the Theory of Planned Behavior. Methods: A cross-sectional electronic survey was distributed to 181 active duty Soldiers. Descriptive statistics were used to report frequency of high intention to disclose concussive symptoms among demographics, and a multivariate regression model was used to assess significant predictors of intention …

Identifying Cognitive And Postural Deficits Through Re-Baseline Evaluations, Brian J. Mizeski Jan 2017

Identifying Cognitive And Postural Deficits Through Re-Baseline Evaluations, Brian J. Mizeski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Baseline evaluations provide vital information for clinicians, as they are a representation of an athlete’s healthy clinical state. It has been recommended when an athlete sustain a concussion, they be administered a re-baseline evaluation, as the effects of a single concussion are not well documented. Limited literature was found which examines re-baseline examinations following a concussion. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate cognitive and postural deficits, in athletes who sustained a concussion, at the conclusion of the athletic season. Methods: 38 concussed athletes (CONC) were matched on sport and gender with 38 healthy …
