Dartmouth Scholarship

Multi-wavelength Near-Infrared (NIR) Tomography was utilized in this study to non-invasively quantify physiological parameters of breast tumors using direct spectral reconstruction. Frequency domain NIR measurements were incorporated with a new spectrally constrained direct chromophore and scattering image reconstruction algorithm, which was validated in simulations and experimental phantoms. Images of total hemoglobin, oxygen saturation, water, and scatter parameters were obtained with higher accuracy than previously reported. Using this spectral approach, in vivo NIR images are presented and interpreted through a series of case studies (n=6 subjects) having differing abnormalities. The corresponding mammograms and ultrasound images are also evaluated. Three of six …

Role Of Computed Tomography In Acute Pancreatitis And Its Complications Among Age Groups, Ishtiaq Ahmed Chishty, Vaqar Bari, Sajida Pasha, Dawar Burhan, Zishan Haider, Zafar Rafique

Department of Radiology

Objective: To determine value of CT scan in diagnosis of acute pancreatitis, its complications and to correlate with severity among different age groups. Methods: The study was carried out from August 2001 to August 2002 at the Radiology Department, Aga Khan University Hospital. A total of 40 patients (33 male and 7 female) with age range from 16-71 years were divided in three groups. Group I was less than 40 years (12 patients), Group II was between 40-60 years (17 patients), and Group III was more than 60 years (11 patients). CT scans were assessed for pancreatic necrosis and its complications. …

A middle-aged lady presented with pain, tenderness and swelling in the left hypochondrium since one month. She had a history of contact with dogs and grazing animals. Sonography and computed tomography showed the pathognomonic signs of hydatid disease. The patient refused surgical treatment. She was discharged on Albendazole therapy and did not return for a follow up.

Hemorrhagic Corpus Luteum Mimicking Heterotopic Pregnancy, Saba Sohail Mar 2005

Hemorrhagic Corpus Luteum Mimicking Heterotopic Pregnancy, Saba Sohail

Department of Radiology

Hemorrhagic corpus luteum (CL) is clinically known to simulate a number of medical, surgical and gynecologic conditions that cause acute abdomen. One such case is hereby presented that mimicked ectopic pregnancy clinically and heterotopic pregnancy on ultrasound. Laparoscopy was decisive.

Nigrostriatal degeneration, the pathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD), is mirrored by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) intoxication. MPTP-treated animals show the common behavioral, motor, and pathological features of human disease. We demonstrated previously that adoptive transfer of Copaxone (Cop-1) immune cells protected the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway in MPTP-intoxicated mice. Herein, we evaluated this protection by quantitative proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (1H MRSI). 1H MRSI performed in MPTP-treated mice demonstrated that N-acetyl aspartate (NAA) was significantly diminished in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and striatum, regions most affected in human disease. When the same regions were coregistered with immunohistochemical stains for …

A 19-year-old man presented with cough and haemoptysis of ten days duration. He also had mild right hypochondrial pain. Chest radiograph and computed tomography (CT) showed a rounded soft tissue density opacity with an air crescent sign. CT showed multiple cystic lesions in the liver with a daughter cyst in its lateral wall. Diagnosis of hydatid disease of lung and liver was made. The contents of the liver cyst were aspirated, hypertonic saline instilled, re-aspirated, and absolute alcohol injected. Hydatid disease is endemic in certain parts of the world. Although the lungs and liver are most frequently affected, the disease …

Multiple Parameters In The Diagnosis Of Ectopic Pregnancy, Iram Naseem, Vaqar Bari, Naila Nadeem

Department of Radiology

Objective: To determine the role of emergency ultrasound examination in the diagnosis and management of ectopic pregnancy. Methods: A descriptive study done at the Radiology Department, Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi from January 1999 to December 2000 using observational facts by non-probability convenient sampling method. Seventy one patients who presented with acute symptoms in early pregnancy, were subjected to emergency pelvic ultrasound. Both transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound were done in 52 patients while in 19 patients only transabdominal ultrasound was performed. Serum Beta hCG levels, of all patients were greater than 1500 iu/ml.Results: Ultrasound correctly identified ectopic pregnancy in 71 patients. …

Medium From Irradiated Cells Induces A Dose Dependent Expression Of Mitochondrial Changes And Bcl2 Responses In Unirradiated Human Keratinocytes, Paula Maguire, Carmel Mothersill, C. Seymour, Fiona Lyng

Articles

Exposure of unirradiated human keratinocytes to irradiated cell conditioned medium (ICCM) is known to cause a cascade of events that leads to reproductive death and apoptosis. This study investigates the effect of ICCM on clonogenic survival, mitochondrial mass and BCL2 expression in unirradiated keratinocytes. Exposure to 5 mGy, 0.5 Gy and 5 Gy ICCM resulted in a significant decrease in clonogenic survival. Human keratinocytes incubated with ICCM containing an antioxidant, N-acetylcysteine, showed no significant decrease in clonogenic survival. HPV-G cells incubated with ICCM containing a caspase 9 inhibitor showed no significant decrease in clonogenic survival when the ICCM dose was …
