Background: Mastectomies have long been used as a surgical treatment for malignant and benign disorders of the breast, both as a therapy and prophylaxis in high-risk patients. A nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) allows for removal of most of the glandular and ductal tissues while preserving the surface architecture of the nipple-areola complex (NAC). In satisfactory surgical candidates, this procedure allows for superior aesthetic outcomes compared to other mastectomy techniques and minimizes the need for additional procedures to reconstruct the nipple. Increasingly popular for use in breast reconstruction, acellular dermal matrix (ADM) can provide support and protection to implants. However, use of ADM may be associated with infection and complications, including red breast syndrome (RBS). RBS is an inflammatory event that typically presents with cutaneous erythema over the domain where the ADM is surgically implanted. As ADM use increases, presumably, more cases of RBS will occur. Thus, techniques and tools to mitigate or manage RBS are needed to improve patient outcomes. Millions of people around the globe suffer peripheral nerve injuries caused by trauma and medical disorders. However, medical school curricula are profoundly deficient in peripheral nerve education. This lack of knowledge within the healthcare profession may cause inadequate patient care. We developed the Virtual Peripheral Nerve Academy (VPNA) as a reusable virtual learning environment to provide medical students with detailed education on the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The post-reconstruction appearance of mastectomy scars is a contributing factor that affects how patients perceive themselves after breast reconstruction.1 Patients that undergo a skin-sparing mastectomy (SSM) may often have a periareolar incision which can leave an unappealing transverse scar. Regardless of whether reconstruction is performed in a delayed or immediate fashion, the transverse mastectomy scar itself commonly lies in the center of the breast near the reconstructed nipple-areolar complex, causing psychological trauma and continued patient dissatisfaction.2 This also may lead to post-reconstruction multiple mastectomy scar revisions. Breast cancer is the most common malignancy diagnosed in women aside from nonmelanoma skin cancer; 276,480 new cases of breast cancer are estimated to be diagnosed by the end of 2020.1 An estimated 76% of patients with stage III or IV breast cancer pursue mastectomy as part of their treatment.2 Recent breast reconstruction trends reveal an upsurge in the percentage of patients pursuing breast reconstruction following mastectomy recent studies reveal that 54-63% of women undergoing mastectomy decide to pursue breast reconstruction.3 Breast reconstruction is conventionally considered complete after the restoration of the Nipple-areolar complex (NAC), 71% of patients consider a …
