Osteoarthritis Disease Severity In The Temporomandibular Joint And The Knee Joint: A Comparative Cadaveric Study, Jessica A Immonen, Jason Ciccotelli, Linh M Nguyen, Lesley Gilmer, Landen Broadhead, Mackenzie Kitchen, Conner Paul, Jeremy James

Faculty and Staff Publications

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the level of disease severity in a pilot cohort of temporomandibular joints (TMJs) and compare them to the pathology findings previously characterized in cadaveric knee joints.

DESIGN: Thirty-one intact TMJs from 17 cadaveric donors were harvested and arthritic lesioning seen in the knee joint was investigated on the condyle and the fossa of the TMJ. Prevalence of gross alterations was equated and disease severity was determined for sex- and age-based donor pools using a validated, osteoarthritis (OA) disease severity scale (DSS). Knee joint DSS scores were also compared to the TMJ …

Resilience Of Patients Undergoing Knee And Shoulder Arthroscopy Procedures, Jillian Mazzocca, Natalie Lowenstein, Connor Crutchfield, Jamie Collins, Elizabeth Matzkin Nov 2023

Resilience Of Patients Undergoing Knee And Shoulder Arthroscopy Procedures, Jillian Mazzocca, Natalie Lowenstein, Connor Crutchfield, Jamie Collins, Elizabeth Matzkin

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

INTRODUCTION: Resilience is a person's capacity to overcome adversity. The purpose was to determine what patient factors correlate with resilience using the Brief Resilience Score. We hypothesize that characteristics of female sex, younger age, Workers' Compensation status, and preoperative opioid use are predictors of a lower preoperative resilience score and that patients with positive psychosocial factors would have higher resilience scores.

METHODS: Eight hundred nine patients undergoing knee or shoulder arthroscopy were preoperatively categorized into low, normal, and high-resilience groups. Preoperative patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and demographics were assessed. Statistical analyses evaluated differences in demographics and PROMs between resilience groups. …

Sex- And Ethnic-Specific Patterns In The Incidence Of Hip Fracture Among Older Us Asian And Non-Hispanic White Adults, Joan C Lo, Malini Chandra, David R Lee, Jeanne A Darbinian, Nancy P Gordon, David W Zeltser, Christopher D Grimsrud, Catherine Lee Jun 2023

Sex- And Ethnic-Specific Patterns In The Incidence Of Hip Fracture Among Older Us Asian And Non-Hispanic White Adults, Joan C Lo, Malini Chandra, David R Lee, Jeanne A Darbinian, Nancy P Gordon, David W Zeltser, Christopher D Grimsrud, Catherine Lee

BACKGROUND: Asian and Pacific Islander (Asian/PI) adults have lower hip fracture incidence than non-Hispanic White (NHW) adults, but data regarding Asian/PI subgroups are limited. We compared hip fracture incidence among older US Asian/PI and NHW populations, including ethnic subgroup differences.

METHODS: Using observational data from a California healthcare system, we identified Asian/PI and NHW adults aged ≥50 years (2000-2019) and followed subjects to 2021 for hip fracture determined by principal/primary hospital diagnosis or by secondary hospital diagnosis with hip/femur procedure codes. Age-adjusted hip fracture incidence was calculated with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Log-Poisson regression was used to determine fracture incidence …

UNLABELLED: To explore the use of 5-minute heart rate variability (HRV) during inpatient rehabilitation in the acute phase of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). Longitudinal observational study. Acute inpatient rehabilitation (AIR). 10 patients with acute traumatic SCI. 5-minute HRV supine recordings twice daily on three different days per patient. HRV values were evaluated (1) within a single day (Early versus Late); (2) across the inpatient admission (initial, mid, and discharge); (3) by SCI phenotypes and by clinical outcomes (ex. pressure injuries (PI)). Patients had an average age of 38 years, 80% male, and 40% with tetraplegia. There were no HRV …

The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a prime target for studying black hole accretion and jet formation1,2. Event Horizon Telescope observations of M87 in 2017, at a wavelength of 1.3 mm, revealed a ring-like structure, which was interpreted as gravitationally lensed emission around a central black hole3. Here we report images of M87 obtained in 2018, at a wavelength of 3.5 mm, showing that the compact radio core is spatially resolved. High-resolution imaging shows a ring-like structure of 8.4+0.5−1.1 Schwarzschild radii in diameter, approximately 50% larger than that seen at 1.3 mm. The outer …
