Functional Attenuation Coefficient Imaging Of Rod Inner Segment: The Shape Of Things To Come, Cole Goodman Jun 2022

Functional Attenuation Coefficient Imaging Of Rod Inner Segment: The Shape Of Things To Come, Cole Goodman

Medical Student Research Symposium

Purpose: Dysfunction of mitochondria and their linked processes within the rod cell (i.e., the rod energy-landscape) are leading hypotheses for rod atrophy in retinitis pigmentosa (RP). It remains unclear how to translate the detailed information available from isolated cell / mitochondria studies into how mitochondria are functioning and responding to treatment in vivo. Here we present a new rod energy-landscape biomarker that can help address this problem using a common clinical tool.

Methods: In mice, OCT data was converted into attenuation coefficients (AC) to map the light-scattering of mitochondria within the inner segment (IS), which fills ~75% of its volume …

Purpose: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of a novel optical coherence tomography texture-based en face image analysis (SALSA-Texture) that requires segmentation of only 1 retinal layer for glaucoma detection in eyes with axial high myopia, and to compare SALSA-Texture with standard macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness, macular retinal nerve fiber layer (mRNFL) thickness, and ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness maps.

Design: Comparison of diagnostic approaches.

Methods: Cross-sectional data were collected from 92 eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and 44 healthy control eyes with axial high myopia (axial length >26 mm). Optical coherence tomography texture en face images, …

Submillimeter Retinoblastoma Monitoring Following Transpupillary Thermotherapy Using Hand-Held Optical Coherence Tomography, Mark Mcgarrey, Thamolwan Surakiatchanukul, Carol L. Shields Feb 2018

Submillimeter Retinoblastoma Monitoring Following Transpupillary Thermotherapy Using Hand-Held Optical Coherence Tomography, Mark Mcgarrey, Thamolwan Surakiatchanukul, Carol L. Shields

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

Background: Precise, submillimeter visualization of retinal microstructures is useful for treatment monitoring of retinoblastoma. Herein, we report the use of hand-held optical coherence tomography (HH-OCT) to document a nearly-invisible retinoblastoma and monitor tumor response to transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT). Case presentation: A 3-week-old boy was diagnosed with unilateral familial retinoblastoma in the left eye, classified as group B, and treated with intravenous chemoreduction. At 13-month follow-up, the tumor in the left eye was regressed, and evaluation of the right eye revealed a microscopic, nearly invisible tumor measuring 372 μm in thickness and 1.51 mm in basal dimension. The tumor was confirmed …

Recent Advances In The Management And Understanding Of Diabetic Retinopathy, Matthew Powers, Margaret Greven, Robert Kleinman, Quan D. Nguyen, Diana V. Do Jan 2017

Recent Advances In The Management And Understanding Of Diabetic Retinopathy, Matthew Powers, Margaret Greven, Robert Kleinman, Quan D. Nguyen, Diana V. Do

Journal Articles: Ophthalmology

Despite recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, this complication remains a steadfast challenge to patients and physicians. This review summarizes recent progress in the diagnosis and management of diabetic retinopathy, including automated screening, optical coherence tomography, control of systemic risk factors, surgical techniques, laser treatment, and pharmaceutical treatment, including vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors. Recent advances in pharmaceutical treatments, in particular, hold strong promise of halting and sometimes reversing the disease process. Clinicians nevertheless must remain vigilant in their efforts to diagnose and treat this disease early in its course.

Canine Multifocal Retinopathy In The Australian Shepherd: A Case Report, Ingo Hoffmann, Karina E. Guziewicz, Barbara Zangerl, Gustavo D. Aguirre, Christian Y. Mardin Feb 2016

Canine Multifocal Retinopathy In The Australian Shepherd: A Case Report, Ingo Hoffmann, Karina E. Guziewicz, Barbara Zangerl, Gustavo D. Aguirre, Christian Y. Mardin

Gustavo D. Aguirre, VMD, PhD

A 1-year-old Australian Shepherd (AS) was presented for a routine hereditary eye examination. During the examination multiple raised, brown to orange lesions were noted in the fundus, which could not be attributed to a known retinal disease in this breed. As they clinically most closely resembled canine multifocal retinopathy (cmr) and no indication of an acquired condition was found, genetic tests for BEST1 gene mutations were performed. These showed the dog to be homozygous for the cmr1 (C73T/R25X) gene defect. Furthermore, ultrasound (US), electroretinography (ERG), and optical coherence tomography were performed, confirming changes typical for cmr. Subsequently, the AS pedigree …

Comparison Of Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration Populations In The United States, Susan Lynette Coultas Jan 2016

Comparison Of Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration Populations In The United States, Susan Lynette Coultas

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States in people who are 50 and older. The safety and efficacy of aflibercept for the treatment of late stage neovascular AMD (NAMD) has been demonstrated by clinical trials among several populations; however, it is unclear whether all NAMD patients respond in the same manner as was studied in the clinical trials. The purpose of this study was to examine if populations of patients treated with aflibercept for the treatment of NAMD were significantly different from one another in terms of health characteristics, treatment regimens, …

Abstract

Background

Choroidal thickness (CTh) and choroidal vessel diameter (VD) in the Haler’s layer were evaluated as markers of inflammatory insult in non-infectious uveitis (NIU). Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (Spectralis®, Heidelberg Engineering Inc.) scans were acquired from 23 normal subjects (39 eyes – group 1), 7 subjects with high myopia (14 eyes – group 2), and 19 patients with NIU (23 eyes – group 3). In groups 1 and 2, CTh and VD were measured at 3 different points of the same horizontal OCT scan passing through the fovea and a mean calculated. Mean CTh and VD were calculated in …

Vitreo-Retinal Traction And Anastrozole Use, Alvin Eisner, Emily J. Thielman, Julie Falardeau, John T. Vetto Jan 2009

Vitreo-Retinal Traction And Anastrozole Use, Alvin Eisner, Emily J. Thielman, Julie Falardeau, John T. Vetto

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Purpose—This study tested a prediction stemming from the hypothesis that anastrozole users experience heightened vitreo-retinal traction. This hypothesis was based on the knowledge that menopause increases the risk of intraocular tractional events such as posterior vitreous detachments (PVDs).

Methods—Retinal thickness was measured for 3 groups of amenorrheic women: (1) anastrozole users and (2) tamoxifen users undergoing adjuvant therapy for early-stage breast cancer, and (3) control subjects not using hormonal medication. Foveal shape indices were derived for subjects without PVDs.

Results—For anastrozole users, the distance to the temporal side of the fovea became less than the distance to …
