• Measuring pupillary light reflex is a standard part of neurological assessment.
• Changes in pupil reactivity may indicate unfavorable outcomes, such as increased intracranial pressure and brain herniation.
• Physiologic and pharmacologic agents may affect pupil reactivity.
• In some instances, pupillary light reflex is the only piece of neurologic assessment readily testable.

INTRODUCTION
DNA-sequencing is not readily available in countries with little research resources or where health insurance does not cover the costs. This is especially true for very rare (orphan) inheritable retinal diseases. We wanted to develop a rapid targeted-sequencing protocol for eight genes involved in Familial Exudative Vitreo-Retinopathy (FEVR), Norrie Disease, and Retinoschisis, at greatly reduced cost.

Background: Low Vision is a life-altering visual disability (CDC, 2015). OTs work with individuals with low vision and work in the workplace and education, however, there is no research on OTs working with individuals with low vision in work or post educational settings (Butler, 2016). Vocational and educational needs are often not being met for individuals with low vision (Barbieri et al., 2019).

Purpose:

Uncorrected refractive error (URE) remains a major cause of preventable vision impairment in the pediatric population with large inequities in disease burden. The present study aims to elucidate the global burden of pediatric URE and explore the current lens delivery systems which address this problem. Within this framework, we introduce a new model of corrective lens delivery that may improve upon existing models.

Methods:

The purpose of this capstone project was to advocate occupational therapy in low vision rehabilitation for improved access to low vision rehabilitation (LVR) for the adult population. However, due to COVID-19 pandemic, this capstone project shifted to a research study assessing limiting factors for occupational therapy collaboration with low vision services and exploring eye physician’s perception on low vision occupational therapy.

Abstract

Introduction: Clinic process inefficiencies cause lengthy visit and wait times, which frustrate patients and providers and limit clinic capacity

Objective: To identify process inefficiencies and assess process flow interventions

Methods: Prospective, consecutive series of resident clinic visits over a 3-week period after transferring refraction from tech to resident. Personnel recorded the time spent waiting for and undergoing each clinic process. The clinic also piloted a “Fast Track” from registration to resident for appropriate established patients.

Aim 1: To increase the percentage of JFMA diabetic patients with up-to-date retinopathy screening to 60% by April 1, 2019.

Aim 2: To increase the utilization of an in-office portable retinal scanner by identifying current barriers to its use and developing a standardized workflow to overcome these barriers.

Outcome measure: The percentage of adult diabetic patients with a JFMA provider listed as the PCP who have been seen in the Jefferson health system within the last 24 months, who had retinopathy screening once in the last 24 months.

Process measure: The number of retinal scans completed each week.

Given at the North East Chapter of the Association for Education and Rehabilitation for the Blind and Visually Impaired (NEAER) conference, this presentation encouraged health care providers to work as a team to care for older, visually impaired adults. Objectives: To assess general patient knowledge of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), including risk factors, early signs, treatment options, and low-vision resources. We also aimed to assess primary care provider practice patterns including early detection, timely referral to ophthalmology, and management after diagnosis of AMD.
