Clear Cell Carcinoma Of The Pelvic Side Wall Arising From Endometriosis., Lisa N Abaid, John S Cupp, Miles Chang, Steven R Beanes, Bram H Goldstein

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Endometriosis is a condition wherein an ectopic layer of endometrial tissue arises in an extra-uterine location, often effecting significant pelvic pain and infertility. While very uncommon, there have been reported cases of endometriosis undergoing malignant transformation, frequently involving the ovaries and seldom in extra-gonadal regions. We recount a case depicting a 63 year-old woman who presented with an apparent inguinal hernia in 2017; she was ultimately diagnosed with a pelvic side wall clear cell carcinoma and attendant metastatic disease to the medial groin, which emanated from endometriosis. Malignant transformation of endometriosis identified in the pelvic side wall is a very …

Extracellular Vesicle Rnas Reflect Placenta Dysfunction And Are A Biomarker Source For Preterm Labour., Shannon Fallen, David Baxter, Xiaogang Wu, Taek-Kyun Kim, Oksana Shynlova, Min Young Lee, Kelsey Scherler, Stephen Lye, Leroy Hood, Kai Wang

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Preterm birth (PTB) can lead to lifelong complications and challenges. Identifying and monitoring molecular signals in easily accessible biological samples that can diagnose or predict the risk of preterm labour (PTL) in pregnant women will reduce or prevent PTBs. A number of studies identified putative biomarkers for PTL including protein, miRNA and hormones from various body fluids. However, biomarkers identified from these studies usually lack consistency and reproducibility. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) in circulation have gained significant interest in recent years as these vesicles may be involved in cell-cell communication. We have used an improved small RNA library construction protocol and …

Fenestration Of The Proximal Left Ovarian Vein., Mayank Patel, Joe Iwanaga, Rod J Oskouian, R Shane Tubbs Mar 2018

Fenestration Of The Proximal Left Ovarian Vein., Mayank Patel, Joe Iwanaga, Rod J Oskouian, R Shane Tubbs

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

A fenestration in the left ovarian vein was found in a fresh-frozen female cadaver. The opening did not have any vessels or additional anatomical structures passing through it. The ovarian vein is also referred to as the female gonadal vein. This type of anatomical variation is clinically relevant in procedures that deal with the manipulation of the gonadal veins, specifically conditions such as ovarian vein thrombosis, ovarian vein stenosis, and pelvic congestion syndrome.

Immediate Versus Delayed Insertion Of The Levonorgestrel Intrauterine Device In Postpartum Adolescents: A Randomized Pilot Study., Reni Soon, Katie Mcguire, Jennifer Salcedo, Bliss Kaneshiro Mar 2018

Immediate Versus Delayed Insertion Of The Levonorgestrel Intrauterine Device In Postpartum Adolescents: A Randomized Pilot Study., Reni Soon, Katie Mcguire, Jennifer Salcedo, Bliss Kaneshiro

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

This pilot study assessed the feasibility of conducting a larger randomized controlled trial comparing the proportion of adolescents using a levonorgestrel intrauterine device (LNG IUD) at six months postpartum when it is inserted immediately after vaginal delivery (within 10 minutes after placental expulsion) compared to insertion four to six weeks postpartum. Pregnant adolescents (14 to 19 years) who desired a LNG IUD for postpartum contraception were randomized to insertion of the LNG IUD either within 10 minutes of delivery of the placenta or at 4-6 weeks postpartum. Study follow-up visits were conducted at 4-6 weeks postpartum, 10 weeks postpartum, and …

Complications Of Subcutaneous Contraception: A Review., Rebecca C Ramdhan, Emily Simonds, Charlotte Wilson, Marios Loukas, Rod J Oskouian, R Shane Tubbs Jan 2018

Complications Of Subcutaneous Contraception: A Review., Rebecca C Ramdhan, Emily Simonds, Charlotte Wilson, Marios Loukas, Rod J Oskouian, R Shane Tubbs

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Over 62 million women in the United States are of childbearing age and 60% of them use contraception. Subcutaneous contraceptives include implantable contraceptives and subcutaneous injections. Implantable contraception involves subdermal time-release of synthetic progestin, which allows for several years of continuous, highly effective contraception. Its main effects are inhibition of ovulation and thickening of the cervical mucus. Many complications have been associated with subcutaneous contraception, including menstrual disturbances, headache, weight gain, acne, dizziness, mood disturbances, nausea, lower abdominal pain, hair loss, loss of libido, pain at the implant site, neuropathy, and follicular cysts. Using standard search engines, the complications of …

Targeted Treatment Of Advanced Ovarian Cancer: Spotlight On Rucaparib., Diana C Pearre, Krishnansu S Tewari Jan 2018

Targeted Treatment Of Advanced Ovarian Cancer: Spotlight On Rucaparib., Diana C Pearre, Krishnansu S Tewari

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

The last 2 years have ushered in a new era in ovarian cancer therapy with the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) approval of poly-ADP ribose polymerase (PARP) inhibitors (PARPi). One of the deadliest cancers that women experience, ovarian cancer, is most often diagnosed in advanced stages. Although cytoreductive surgery and (platinum/taxane-based) chemotherapy can place the majority of patients into remission, most will experience a relapse of their disease in their lifetime. This has led to studies exploring the benefits and efficacy of maintenance treatment. This review will briefly discuss the history of maintenance therapy as well as focus on …
