Multivisceral Transplant Prognosis And Complications In Patients With Metastatic Neuroendocrine Tumor, Austin Mueller, Syed-Mohammed Jafri Mar 2023

Multivisceral Transplant Prognosis And Complications In Patients With Metastatic Neuroendocrine Tumor, Austin Mueller, Syed-Mohammed Jafri

Medical Student Research Symposium

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are a rare subset of cancers that most commonly arise in the gastrointestinal tract, but can also arise in the pancreas, lungs, ovaries, thyroid, pituitary gland, and adrenal gland. When patients present with metastatic NETs, physicians have a variety of therapeutic options. Considering these options, transplant specialists are often involved due to the profound therapeutic effects of multi-organ transplantation. However, little information is available on prognosis/complications for patients that receive multi-organ transplants due to severe metastatic NETs.

With the incidence of NETs in the United States trending in an upward direction, researchers and physicians must understand the …

Elevated Liver Enzymes Portends A Higher Rate Of Complications And Death In Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (Sars-Cov-2), Emily E. Currier, Mohamed Dabaja Do, Syed-Mohammed Jafri Md

Medical Student Research Symposium

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), or COVID-19, has infected millions worldwide since its discovery in December 2019, but little is still known about the disease process. Preliminary research in China notes liver function test (LFTs) abnormalities are common in COVID-19 patients, suggesting decreased hepatic function, and that abnormalities in LFTs are related to complicated disease course and negative outcomes. However, there has been limited large-scale data assessing COVID-19’s association with liver dysfunction and negative outcomes.

Aim: The significance of this research is to investigate how COVID-19 affects the liver function and disease course in patients infected with …

Quality Improvement In Ibd Care: The Influence Of A Qi Specific Conference For Fellows, Olayinka Afolabi, Alexis Faber, Raya Kutaimy, Paul Naylor, Murray Ehrinpreis

Medical Student Research Symposium

Given the complexity of management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), medical societies such as the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) have established measures aimed at defining quality of care. In 2011, the AGA proposed 10 quality metrics for IBD, eight of these measures relate to outpatient management and two focus on inpatient management. Our objective was to evaluate compliance with these measures in our own general GI practice and determine whether a GI conference discussing quality improvement (QI) in 2017 was effective.

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

Black men have the greatest burden of premature death and disability from hypertension (HTN) in the United States, and the highest incidence and mortality from colorectal cancer (CRC). While several clinical trials have reported beneficial effects of lifestyle changes on blood pressure (BP) reduction, and improved CRC screening with patient navigation (PN), the effectiveness of these approaches in community-based settings remains understudied, particularly among Black men.

Methods/design

MISTER B is a two-parallel-arm randomized controlled trial that will compare the effect of a motivational interviewing tailored lifestyle intervention (MINT) versus a culturally targeted PN intervention on improvement of BP …

Effect Of Four-Day Psyllium Supplementation On Bowel Preparation For Colonoscopy:A Prospective Double Blind Randomized Trial [Isrctn76623768], Walter A. Salwen, Marc D. Basson

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

Patients with new onset constipation or presumed hemorrhoid bleeding frequently require the use of both fiber supplements and diagnostic colonoscopy. We sought to determine whether preliminary fiber supplementation would alter the tolerability or efficacy of a standard bowel preparation for colonoscopy

Methods

A prospective, double blind, randomized trial was designed to compare a short course of a psyllium-based supplement versus placebo prior to a colon lavage. Patients were given an unlabeled canister of powder, and instructed to take 1 tablespoon with 8 oz of water bid for 4 days before colonoscopy. A 4-liter polyethylene based glycol lavage was …
