Department of Medicine

Introduction: Postoperative ileus (poi) is defined as a temporary cessation of bowel movement after a surgical procedure. Cessation of bowel movement not only leads to disturbing constipation but also may lead to nausea, loss of appetite, and food intolerance. Literature reports "sham feeding" (gum-chewing) effect as an increase in chewing and saliva which enhances the gastric emptying and overall motility of gut as a cephalic phase of digestion. Therefore, we aim to assess the effect of adding gum-chewing to the conventional postoperative feeding regimen on restoring postoperative bowel function and length of stay in hospital of patients undergoing elective hip …

Interferon Alpha For Chronic Hepatitis D, Zaigham Abbas, Muhammad Arsalan Khan, Mohammad Salih, Wasim Jafri Dec 2011

Interferon Alpha For Chronic Hepatitis D, Zaigham Abbas, Muhammad Arsalan Khan, Mohammad Salih, Wasim Jafri

Department of Medicine

Background:

Hepatitis D virus is a small defective RNA virus that requires the presence of hepatitis B virus infection to infect a person. Hepatitis D is a difficult-to-treat infection. Several clinical trials have been published on the efficacy of interferon alpha for hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection. However, there are few randomised trials evaluating the effects of interferon alpha, and it is difficult to judge any benefit of this intervention from the individual trials.

Objectives:

To evaluate the beneficial and harmful effects of interferon alpha for Patients with chronic hepatitis D.

Search methods:

We identified relevant for the review randomised …

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth And Lactose Intolerance Contribute To Irritable Bowel Syndrome Symptomatology In Pakistan, Javed Yakoob, Zaigham Abbas, Rustam Khan, Saeed Hamid, Safia Awan, Wasim Jafri Nov 2011

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth And Lactose Intolerance Contribute To Irritable Bowel Syndrome Symptomatology In Pakistan, Javed Yakoob, Zaigham Abbas, Rustam Khan, Saeed Hamid, Safia Awan, Wasim Jafri

Department of Medicine

Background /Aim: The symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome resemble those of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of SIBO and lactose intolerance (LI) occurrence in Patients with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) according to Rome III criteria.

PatientS and Methods: In this retrospective case-control study, Patients over 18 years of age with altered bowel habit, bloating, and Patients who had lactose Hydrogen breath test (H 2 BT) done were included. The "cases" were defined as Patients who fulfill Rome III criteria for IBS-D, while "controls" were those having chronic nonspecific diarrhea …

Antibiotic Susceptibility Patterns Of Helicobacter Pylori And Triple Therapy In A High-Prevalence Area, Javed Yakoob, Shahab Abid, Z. Abbas, S. N. W. Jafri Oct 2010

Antibiotic Susceptibility Patterns Of Helicobacter Pylori And Triple Therapy In A High-Prevalence Area, Javed Yakoob, Shahab Abid, Z. Abbas, S. N. W. Jafri

This study aims to determine primary Helicobacter pylori resistance and its effect on eradication of the organism. Ninety-two Patients with dyspeptic symptoms were enrolled. H. pylori was cultured and antibiotic sensitivity was determined by the Epsilometer test (Etest) for clarithromycin (CLR), amoxicillin (AMX) and metronidazole (MTR). 23S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) point mutations associated with clarithromycin resistance were also detected. Patients were treated with omeprazole (40 mg daily), CLR (500 mg) and AMX (1g twice a day) for 14 days. A (14)C-urea breath test ((14)C-UBT) was repeated four weeks after completion of treatment to confirm eradication. Triple therapy failure was seen …

Low Prevalence Of The Intact Cag Pathogenicity Island In Clinical Isolates Of Helicobacter Pylori In Karachi, Pakistan, Javed Yakoob, Wasim Jafri, Zaigham Abbas, Shahab Abid, R. Khan, N. Jafri, Z. Ahmad

Department of Medicine

Clinical diseases that follow Helicobacter pylori infection are associated with expression of the cagA gene, a part of cytotoxin-associated gene pathogenicity island (cag-PAI). This study aims to determined whether or not the presence of cagA is associated with the presence of complete cag-PAI and to evaluate inflammatory changes associated with the five loci in the cag-PAI of H. pylori comprising cagA, cagA promoter region (cagAP), cagE, cagT and the left end of the cagA gene (LEC). H. pylori isolates were obtained from patients with dyspeptic symptoms. Clinical strains of H. pylori were screened by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for …
