It is a matter of time before the next widespread pandemic or natural disaster hits the United States (U.S.). The international response to the 2009 H1N1 influenza stands as a cautionary tale about how prepared the world is for such an emergency. The response to the Colorado floods is a textbook example of how to respond to catastrophic disasters Responders from hundreds of different organizations came together to form a single coordinated, unified command structure that resulted in the rapid and effective evacuation and rescue of hundreds of people in just three days. Many academic medical libraries have a large volume of information that makes it difficult to find answers in a time-sensitive clinical setting. We designed an Emergency Medicine library guide, tested its efficiency and surveyed users about their preference of an EM library website compared to the general library website.Methods: We created an EM library guide using the Libguide software by Springshare. This article examines Pubget, a free Web-based search engine for life sciences researchers for conducting searches of the medical literature and retrieving full-text PDFs. Its search functionality and add-on features are evaluated to determine potential for library instruction and promotion. With many libraries relying on OpenURL link resolvers to connect searchers with institutional subscriptions, Pubget offers an alternative by combining search, article-level link resolving, and authentication in a single platform. The authors determine advantages and disadvantages for using Pubget based on product testing and make recommendations for institutions interested in “activating” subscriptions in Pubget.

On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) into law. The reforms introduced through PPACA present a paradigm shift in the future delivery model of all health care, including Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Changes embodied in this law offer a variety of opportunities to improve the delivery of care in urgent and emergent medical situations in the out-of-hospital setting.
