Background: The prevalence of atopic dermatitis (AD) has rapidly increased in the past 4 decades and has been mostly observed in children. The prevalence of obesity has also significantly increased worldwide, suggesting that the two conditions may be associated.

Methods: This retrospective analytic study involved a cross-sectional design and used secondary data taken from the medical record of patients who visited the Pediatric Dermatology Subdivision at Dermatology and Venereology Polyclinic Sanglah General Hospital from January 2015 to December 2015. A case report of a 31-year-old woman who developed anterior subacapsular cataracts, and associated dermatological signs, after exposure to black mold. While atopic illness is commonly seen in childhood, a growing body of literature supports adult onset atopic dermatitis. Anterior subcapsular cataracts are pathognomonic for atopic illness, and can support a definitive and expedited dermatologic diagnosis of adult onset disease.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this selective EBM review is to determine whether or not probiotics are effective in reducing symptoms of atopic dermatitis.

STUDY DESIGN: Selective EBM review of three randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials published after 2009, all English language.

DATA SOURCES: All three studies were published in peer-reviewed journals found on PubMed and selected based on relevance to the proposed clinical question.
