Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, and incidence has continued to increase. Half of all melanomas have a BRAF V600E mutation and respond to MAPK pathway inhibitors, including BRAF inhibitor therapy or BRAF/MEK inhibitor combination therapy, but nearly all patients develop treatment resistance. Melanoma cell lines produce variable results as models of MAPK pathway inhibitor resistance. Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common skin cancer, affecting 1,000,000 people in the United States annually and causing approximately 9,000 deaths. SCC and basal cell carcinoma are the most common types of skin cancer arising in the superficial squamous cells or deeper basal cells of the epidermis, respectively. SCC is more likely to invade and metastasize, while basal cell cancer tends to grow locally. While the majority of cases of SCC are cured by surgery alone, approximately 2-5% of SCCs metastasize, at which point outcomes may be poor. Diethylene glycol monoethyl ether (DEGEE) is a promising solvent component in topical cream formulations due to its superior solubilizing abilities with certain active pharmaceutical ingredients. One of the goals of this study is to characterize the effects of pH on the physical and chemical stabilities of topical cream formulations containing particularly high concentrations of DEGEE by characterizing a full topical pH profile of 3.5 – 9.0. Background: Melanoma is the third most common cancer in individuals ages 15 – 29. The greatest risk for melanoma is ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Collegiate athletes are exposed to 1,000 more sun hours per year than the average adult, placing them at higher risk for melanoma. Evidence supports sunscreen education and screening to promote protective behaviors in young adults.

Objective: This evidence-based pilot project implements the standardized screening of sunscreen use and sun protective behaviors in women’s soccer players ages 18 to 21 years old at the University of San Diego.

After decades without effective systemic treatments for advanced melanoma, the advent of targeted and immune therapies has substantially improved patient survival.
