Although rare, subungual carcinoma is the most common malignant nail tumor. The symptomatology is not characteristic, being very similar to that of other nail and periungual diseases. For this reason, early diagnosis is usually established by performing a biopsy. With appropriate treatment, subungual carcinoma usually has a favorable prognosis. Metastatic cases are rarely encountered, but they usually have a poor therapeutic result. This article presents the case of a patient with subungual carcinoma (diagnosed by histopathological exam), initially treated by amputation of the distal and middle phalanges of the fourth finger. Two years after the operation, a recurrence in the …

Renal cell carcinoma is the most common type of primary urogenital cancer, usually resistant to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Hypertrophic lichen planus is an inflammatory dermatosis characterized by the presence of papulosquamous and intensely pruritic lesions. The association of these two conditions is unusual, being reported in the specialized literature only in a few rare cases with the onset of lichenoid lesions after patients have undergone various forms of treatment. The case of a 62-year-old male patient who was admitted for severe abdominal pain due to a giant renal tumor associated with a hypertrophic plaque located on the anterior part of …

BACKGROUND: Traumatic insults, infection, and surgical procedures can leave skin defects that are not amenable to primary closure. Split-thickness skin grafting (STSG) is frequently used to achieve closure of these wounds. Although effective, STSG can be associated with donor site morbidity, compounding the burden of illness in patients undergoing soft tissue reconstruction procedures. With an expansion ratio of 1:80, autologous skin cell suspension (ASCS) has been demonstrated to significantly decrease donor skin requirements compared with traditional STSG in burn injuries. We hypothesized that the clinical performance of ASCS would be similar for soft tissue reconstruction of nonburn wounds.

METHODS: A …

Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Treatment Of Skin: Penetration Into Hair Follicles, Kseniia Konina, Theresa A. Freeman, Mark J. Kushner Aug 2023

Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Treatment Of Skin: Penetration Into Hair Follicles, Kseniia Konina, Theresa A. Freeman, Mark J. Kushner

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Sterilization of skin prior to surgery is challenged by the reservoir of bacteria that resides in hair follicles. Atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJs) have been proposed as a method to treat and deactivate these bacteria as atmospheric plasmas are able to penetrate into structures and crevices with dimensions similar to those found in hair follicles. In this paper, we discuss results from a computational investigation of an APPJ sustained in helium flowing into ambient air, and incident onto a layered dielectric similar to human skin in which there are idealized hair follicles. We found that, depending on the location of …

Dorsal Wrist Impingement Syndrome Pain After Ganglion Cyst Removal – A Case Report, Sidharth Sahni, Joseph Fares, Natty Jumreornvong, Arpun Shah, Mariam Zakhary May 2023

Dorsal Wrist Impingement Syndrome Pain After Ganglion Cyst Removal – A Case Report, Sidharth Sahni, Joseph Fares, Natty Jumreornvong, Arpun Shah, Mariam Zakhary

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

A ganglion cyst is a benign fluid-filled sac that develops idiopathically on the dorsal aspect of the wrist by the joint capsule or tendon sheath. It is diagnosed clinically, with MRI and ultrasound used for confirmation. Treatment includes immobilization, aspiration, hydrossection, steroid or hyaluronidase injection, and surgery. Although uncommon, Dorsal Ganglion Cysts (DGC) can lead to Dorsal Wrist Impingement (DWI) syndrome. This syndrome is caused by a thickening of the wrist capsule from overuse, injury, or repetitive procedures. This thickness leads to capsule pinching commonly by the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) tendon during wrist extension and tenderness by the …

Accidental Extravasation Of Mitomycin C Into The Subcutaneous Tissue, Johnathon Chung, Brooke Walterscheid, Jose Lopez-Vera, Hytham Rashid, Mike K. Liang Apr 2023

Accidental Extravasation Of Mitomycin C Into The Subcutaneous Tissue, Johnathon Chung, Brooke Walterscheid, Jose Lopez-Vera, Hytham Rashid, Mike K. Liang

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Introduction

Mitomycin C (MMC) is a common chemotherapeutic agent used to treat a variety of solid tumors. Cutaneous adverse events are rare, but MMC is a known vesicant reported to cause tissue necrosis and sloughing, erythema, and ulceration if incorrectly infused into the subcutaneous tissue. Definitive treatment of extravasation injuries due to MMC depends on the severity of the cutaneous manifestation, which includes stopping the infusion, removing the catheter, or possible debridement.

Case Presentation

We present the case of a 70-year-old female with extensive soft-tissue injury secondary to extravasation of MMC that required hospital admission and surgical intervention to remove …

Evaluation Of Efficacy And Safety Of Scalp Threading With Polydioxanone (Pdo) Monofilament Threads In The Treatment Of Male Androgenetic Alopecia, Abdel Kareem Im, Ibrahim Mk, Mahmoud E. Sherif Jan 2023

Evaluation Of Efficacy And Safety Of Scalp Threading With Polydioxanone (Pdo) Monofilament Threads In The Treatment Of Male Androgenetic Alopecia, Abdel Kareem Im, Ibrahim Mk, Mahmoud E. Sherif

Al-Azhar International Medical Journal

Background: Male pattern baldness, known as androgenetic alopecia (AGA), is progressive hair loss. The degree of severity, age at onset, and location of hair loss of this polygenetic condition were varied. Polydioxanone (PDO) threads were used for facial rejuvenation, and becoming increasingly popular in hair growth. Aim: to determine polydioxanone monofilamet threads for male patients with crown baldness (vertex androgenetic alopecia) are safe and effective. Subject and Material: In this pilot study, 7 male AGA patients experiencing crown hair (stage III-vertex androgenetic alopecia by the Norwood-Hamilton scale). Polydioxanone monofilament threads were inserted into the dermal layer of the crown, or …

Virtual Surgical Planning In Craniomaxillofacial Surgery: A Structured Review, Kaye Verlarde, Rentor Cafino, Armando Isla Jr., Karen Mae Ty, Xavier-Lewis Palmer, Lucas Potter, Larry Nadorra, Luchin Valrian Pueblos, Lemuel Clark Velasco Jan 2023

Virtual Surgical Planning In Craniomaxillofacial Surgery: A Structured Review, Kaye Verlarde, Rentor Cafino, Armando Isla Jr., Karen Mae Ty, Xavier-Lewis Palmer, Lucas Potter, Larry Nadorra, Luchin Valrian Pueblos, Lemuel Clark Velasco

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgery is a challenging and very demanding field that involves the treatment of congenital and acquired conditions of the face and head. Due to the complexity of the head and facial region, various tools and techniques were developed and utilized to aid surgical procedures and optimize results. Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP) has revolutionized the way craniomaxillofacial surgeries are planned and executed. It uses 3D imaging computer software to visualize and simulate a surgical procedure. Numerous studies were published on the usage of VSP in craniomaxillofacial surgery. However, the researchers found inconsistency in the previous literature which prompted the …
