Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Introduction: The electrophysiology field has progressed rapidly over the last 2 decades. No study has examined the characteristics of patients and types of electrophysiology procedures performed in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This is important given our distinctly different demographic composition and health system. As such, we sought to describe the characteristics of consecutive patients presenting for electrophysiology procedures in our tertiary care hospital.

Methods: Data was collected from the electrophysiology database at King Khalid University Hospital for procedures performed between April 2016 and November 2022. Patients’ characteristics were retrieved from the electronic medical record. Procedures were categorized into supraventricular …

Novel Cause Of Late Atrial Septal Defect Devices Embolization, Wejdan Ba-Atiyah, Hala Gabel, Ahmad Jamjoom, Jameel Al-Ata Mar 2023

Novel Cause Of Late Atrial Septal Defect Devices Embolization, Wejdan Ba-Atiyah, Hala Gabel, Ahmad Jamjoom, Jameel Al-Ata

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Transcatheter closure of septal defects using specialized devices is a common procedure that has a high success rate. Embolization of Atrial septal defect devices is a known complication seen at a rate of 0.5%. We report a case of late ASD device occluder embolization immediately after brain MRI with clinical consequences and intraoperative evidence of right atrial wall thermal injury. To our knowledge Atrial septal occluder (ASO) device embolization post magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was not reported before, although theoretically possible and that's why six to eight weeks post device implantation MRI is prohibited even with current MRI compatible devices.

Management Of Hyperkalemia To Prevent Cardiac Arrest, Jennifer Harklerode, Amber Paul, Crystal Zheng, Olivia Vanscoy, Olivia Henton, Mark Olah Mar 2022

Management Of Hyperkalemia To Prevent Cardiac Arrest, Jennifer Harklerode, Amber Paul, Crystal Zheng, Olivia Vanscoy, Olivia Henton, Mark Olah

Pharmacy and Wellness Review

Hyperkalemia is a metabolic problem that may be life threatening if left untreated. Cardiac arrhythmias may develop with the potential to lead to cardiac arrest and death. Hyperkalemia can oftentimes be undiagnosed due to the lack of clear, specific symptoms and inconclusive variations in electrocardiogram (ECG) readings and lab values. Therefore, it is important to recognize risk factors that can potentially in-crease serum potassium levels. Screening for medications that increase serum potassium levels and educating patients are steps that both inpatient and outpatient health care professionals can take to increase early detection and prevention of a hyperkalemic episode. It is …

Mental Health Or Cardiac Health. Is There A Reason To Choose? Cardiac Arrhythmias Induced By Atomoxetine And Methylphenidate, Gabriel Cismaru, Viorel Lupu Oct 2021

Mental Health Or Cardiac Health. Is There A Reason To Choose? Cardiac Arrhythmias Induced By Atomoxetine And Methylphenidate, Gabriel Cismaru, Viorel Lupu

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

The current treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit with Hyperactivity consists mainly in the administration of Straterra (Atomoxetine) Concerta and Ritalin (Methylphenidate). The FDA warned that the products might increase systolic, diastolic blood pressure, and lead to ventricular arrhythmias. Arrhythmic events and sudden cardiac death were described in adults with preexistent heart disease. However, studies on children have failed to demonstrate a clear association between the arrhythmic events and these drugs, as demonstrated in adults. What should the attitude of the pediatric psychiatrist be towards the administration of these products? What examination should be made by the psychiatrist …

Flash Pulmonary Edema: A Case And Review Of Left Ventricular Non-Compaction Cardiomyopathy, Paula J. Watts, Oliver S. Garbo, Wendy Barrett, Michael Kopstein, Ryan Maybrook, Dmitriy Scherbak Aug 2020

Flash Pulmonary Edema: A Case And Review Of Left Ventricular Non-Compaction Cardiomyopathy, Paula J. Watts, Oliver S. Garbo, Wendy Barrett, Michael Kopstein, Ryan Maybrook, Dmitriy Scherbak

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Left ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy is an uncommon type of cardiomyopathy caused by malformation of the myocardium during embryogenesis. This results in trabeculations within the ventricular wall that can affect the left and, less commonly, right ventricles. Presentation ranges from clinically asymptomatic to life-threatening arrhythmias. It is a rare and relatively unknown form of cardiomyopathy, though thought to be underdiagnosed. Prevalence is increasing due to improvements in imaging and awareness. Management is similar to that of other cardiomyopathies including angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers, beta-blockers, diuretics, automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator placement and cardiac transplantation. We present a case of a …

Development And Validation Of A Electrocardiographic Diagnostic Score Of Heart Failure Among Patients With Hypertension Attending A Tertiary Hospital In Ibadan, Nigeria: The Risk-Hhf Case-Control Study, Ayodipupo Sikiru Oguntade Aug 2020

Development And Validation Of A Electrocardiographic Diagnostic Score Of Heart Failure Among Patients With Hypertension Attending A Tertiary Hospital In Ibadan, Nigeria: The Risk-Hhf Case-Control Study, Ayodipupo Sikiru Oguntade

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Objectives: Hypertension is the leading cause of heart failure (HF) in sub-Saharan Africa. Electrocardiography (ECG) is a cheap and easily available stratification tool for the diagnosis and prognostication of individuals with hypertension. The aim of this study was to develop an ECG-based HF diagnostic score among patients with hypertension attending a specialist cardiology clinic.

Methods:One hundred and one (101) case-control age- and sex-matched pairs were recruited. The study population were adults with a clinical diagnosis of hypertensive HF (cases) and hypertension without HF (controls). Participants underwent clinical assessment and ECG. Associations between ECG variables and HF risk were …

A Rare Case Of Asystole During A Laparoscopic Appendectomy In A Young Patient, Rachit Gupta, George Yousef, Melissa Lester Jan 2018

A Rare Case Of Asystole During A Laparoscopic Appendectomy In A Young Patient, Rachit Gupta, George Yousef, Melissa Lester

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Laparoscopic surgery has become the mainstay of treatment for uncomplicated appendicitis cases. We describe a case of a 29 year old male with a pertinent past medical history of poorly controlled hypertension who was undergoing a routine laparoscopic appendectomy for confirmed appendicitis and developed bradycardia and subsequent asystolic cardiac arrest approximately one hour into the operation. Urgent cardiopulmonary resuscitation and intravenous (IV) atropine were required to reinitiate sinus cardiac rhythm. While the patient was admitted to the intensive care unit for close monitoring following his operation, he ultimately had an uncomplicated postoperative period and an unremarkable cardiac work up and …
