Echocardiographic Predictive Factors Of Worsening Outcome In Type 1 Cardiorenal Syndrome, Saoussen Antit, Sabrine Bousnina, Marwa Fathi, Ridha Fekih, Elhem Boussabeh, Lilia Zakhama

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Introduction: Type 1 cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) is defined as acute decompensated heart failure (AHF) leading to secondary acute kidney injury. Few studies have evaluated the reliability of transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in assessing outcomes in patients with type 1 CRS. We sought to identify echocardiographic predictors of outcomes (death and rehospitalization) in patients with type 1 CRS. Methods: This was a prospective longitudinal monocentric study, conducted from December 2020 to December 2022 in the cardiology department of the Internal Security Forces Hospital in Marsa, Tunisia. 68 patients with type 1 CRS were included prospectively. Physical, biological, and echocardiographic data were collected …

Objective: Echocardiography is helpful in assessment of pulmonary hemodynamic, however its correlation with Right heart catheterization (RHC) is conflicting. We conducted a study to evaluate sensitivity and specificity of pulmonary hemodynamic parameters measured in echocardiography. Furthermore its correlation with the values measured in RHC was assessed. Method: Retrospective, cross-sectional study conducted at King Fahad medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. 95 adult patients referred for right heart catheterization were enrolled in the study. All the patients had echocardiography and RHC within one week of each other. Result: Diabetes mellitus, hypertension and dyslipidemia were present among 55%, 66% and 41% of patients …

An Apical Mass Of The Left Ventricle After A Myocardial Infarction: Imaging Contribution, Selma Charfeddine, Wiem Feki, Imen Maaloul, Rania Hammami, Emna Daoud Dec 2020

Intramyocardial dissecting hematoma (IDH) is a rare complication of myocardial infarction (MI). It can affect the left ventricular free wall, the right ventricle, or the interventricular septum.
We report a case of a 58-year-old man with an IDH following an acute anterior wall myocardial infarction detected by echocardiography and confirmed by Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR).

Focused Cardiac Ultrasound Is Applicable To Internal Medicine And Critical Care But Skill Gaps Currently Limit Use, Naveed Mahmood, Mamdouh Souleymane, Rajkumar Rajendram, Amro Mt Ghazi, Mubashar Kharal, Mohammad Alqahtani Nov 2020

Focused Cardiac Ultrasound Is Applicable To Internal Medicine And Critical Care But Skill Gaps Currently Limit Use, Naveed Mahmood, Mamdouh Souleymane, Rajkumar Rajendram, Amro Mt Ghazi, Mubashar Kharal, Mohammad Alqahtani

Context: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) put a spotlight on focused cardiac ultrasound (FoCUS). However, the spectra of cardiac disease, and the resources available for investigation vary internationally. The applicability of FoCUS to internal (IM) and critical care medicine (CCM) practice in Saudi Arabia and their current use of FoCUS are unknown.

Aims: To determine the applicability of FoCUS to IM and CCM practice in Saudi Arabia and quantify the residents’ current proficiency, accreditation and use of FoCUS.

Methods: A questionnaire was distributed to the residents in IM and CCM at our institution to determine their proficiency, use of FoCUS, and …

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

A 78-year-old woman with a history of transient ischemic attack was admitted for sudden aphasia. In order to assess the potential cardioembolic source an echocardiogram was performed, which revealed a large mass consistent with a thrombus in transit through a patent foramen ovale. Because of the high risk of systemic embolism, emergent surgical thrombectomy was performed with the intention to discharge the patient safely without any new embolic events. This case report highlights the importance of echocardiography in the evaluation of cardioembolic stroke and the requirement of an emergent approach in case of impending paradoxical embolism.
